22.01.2022 Woke up feeling a bit sniffly this morning so, out of an abundance of caution, having a test and staying away from parliament while I wait. I do encourage anyone who has symptoms to get tested.

21.01.2022 Tonight on The Drum you can watch our own Val Fell! Advocate with Dementia Australia and Peer Ambassador for Council of the Ageing

21.01.2022 PM GOES FOR PHOTO-OP NOT DELIVERY IN WOLLONGONG AGAIN! Today Stephen Jones MP and I called on the government to make the Illawarra a priority for infrastructure funding in the Federal Budget on 6 October. The Prime Minister’s visit yesterday contained not one single direct announcement for funding for the Illawarra. Nothing for desperately needed social housing, nothing for local transport infrastructure to connect our Port to south-western Sydney and nothing for our touri...st industry as they struggle to recover from COVID-19. The Illawarra is desperately in need of infrastructure and investment to create local jobs. Reports of hardship from local business, local charities and local homeless shelters are of great concern and not one visit by the Prime Minister or the Treasurer have produced any local commitments. This contrasts with Labor’s approach to the recovery from the Global Financial Crisis while in Government with Labor investing nearly $1 billion in Cunningham and Whitlam. Today we visited the facilities at Southern Youth and Family Services where the Labor Government invested in new social housing and heard how it created jobs in construction, accommodation for homeless youth and ongoing jobs. SYFS have a shovel-ready project that would do the same again. It is not acceptable for the Prime Minister to visit using the steel works as a backdrop and to ignore the need to invest in our region. At least this time the Liberal’s didn’t try and use Jimmy Barnes’ song to promote themselves.

18.01.2022 Today is International Day of Sign Languages - here is my small effort at signing my best wishes to everyone for this important day and my message of the rights of all people to a quality education! The Deaf Society

17.01.2022 I really enjoyed joining the lovely community of Port Kembla for the official opening of Port Grocer today - this is a community owned supermarket aiming to be local, affordable and zero waste!

17.01.2022 Very sad news today about the passing of Col Markham - a good friend, very well loved member of our community and a respected former MP. Col never stopped fighting for those in need, giving a voice to the struggles of working people and the vulnerable. His commitment to Indigenous Australians also meant he was well loved and respected. Thank you Col for your advice, support and friendship over many years. All my love to Melissa and the family. A sad loss but a life well lived in the service of the community he loved deeply.

16.01.2022 2020 has been an extremely hard year for all of us. Our local businesses, in particular our travel agents, here in the Illawarra have faced very tough times. Last night I spoke about how our local businesses have worked through this very difficult period and the way they have innovated and I also spoke about their achievements in the Illawarra Business Chamber Awards and the charity work that businesses have continued in 2020. I also spoke about our Wollongong Relay For Lif...e Ambassador, Angie Howes, and her son Oscar and their creation, the Her Boy Oscar burger, which they developed in partnership with Illawarra Business of the Year, His Boy Elroy, and raised over $8,000 for the Cancer Council Southern NSW. 15.01.2022 Most years I attend Remembrance Ceremonies in our local community but this year I attended in Canberra - we are all showing respect today in different ways but our message is the same: We extend our thanks and deep respect to all who have served, or are serving today, in conflict and peacekeeping efforts. We acknowledge the great price that so many of these service men and women and their loved ones pay, particularly those who have lost their life or deal with ongoing pain and suffering. We commit to doing all we can to support our returned service men and women. LEST WE FORGET

15.01.2022 Congratulations President-elect Joe Biden and VP-elect Kamala Harris. They have so many challenges ahead but I love their message of unifying the nation and of looking after all people. I also love this little post of a moment of sheer joy

10.01.2022 That’s a wrap for Fathers’ Day at our place, celebrating with all our Dads and thinking of those who are no longer with us plus the Dad who has to work! Happy Fathers’ Day to all the Dads of all types and the Dads whose memories are so treasured!

09.01.2022 There's more to say after RUOK? Times have been tough for so many people - now, and every day, let's look out for each other! Great information from R U OK Day :

08.01.2022 Today Stephen Jones and I signed the NTEU pledge in opposition to the Government’s changes to Uni funding. Our Year 12 students have had a tough enough year without facing significant increases in the cost of doing the courses that they are passionate about. Humanities courses will cost more, some doubling in cost, when we actually need more people with qualifications such as social work and psychology just to name two. Time for the Government to drop this poor policy!

07.01.2022 Seriously - this is unbelievable! What is the Government doing about this?! Bosses getting bonuses and workers being asked to volunteer their efforts is unacceptable!

07.01.2022 Today I spent some time talking to local travel agents about their challenges at this time. Like many local businesses JobKeeper has been critical to them keeping their staff employed and they need this support to continue. Paul Scully and I really appreciated the time they took to explain their current situation to us and to provide ideas on how they can be supported to keep local jobs. Thanks to Darren Rudd at the Australian Federation of Travel Agents for arranging these discussions.

05.01.2022 I love our local Citizenship ceremonies - whether it’s in person or online each newly sworn in citizen is always full of smiles and hope for the future - happy Australian Citizenship Day!

04.01.2022 This is Dementia Awareness Week, addressing such an important issue to so many local people and their families. Please take the time to learn a bit more about this issue and how you can help in simple ways. Our wonderful local Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute is doing important work on dementia so I have made a donation to help their efforts - every little bit helps if you are able to make a small donation too.

02.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC Week! Always Was, Always Will Be.
