13.01.2022 Matt’s story About two years ago at the age of 56, I experienced some pretty dramatic and unexpected changes in my life which saw me jobless and surfing the couches of various friends around Sydney with my son Noah. After many months of this Noah moved to Canada, and I moved to Kincumber. I thought a move to the Coast nearer to nature would be good for me. ... But after while, and still out of work, I felt things were pretty grim. I was spending more time in front of the TV or at the pub than I was at the beach or fishing or walking a trail. Instead of continuing this way I tried to think of how this enforced free time could be turned into a positive. After much thought, and the belief I needed a total life change, I took a big step and in September 2016 enrolled as a full-time, live in student of martial arts in Nagoya, Japan. So from April 2017 I will be living in a Japan training 6 days a week as a full time uchideshi student. I began to prepare my fitness for the rigourous requirements of such training by joining Kincumber gym, where I enlisted help from Darren. Together we established some time based outcomes and by building a structured fitness and diet program and adhering to predetermined bench marks I started working towards my health and fitness goals. In combination with Darren’s program I’m also doing some basic martial arts drills too. Starting at 93kg I am now down to 85.7kg. I have made fantastic improvements in all areas of fitness, particularly cardiovascular fitness and strength. However, I set out determined to reach a goal of 80 kgs. Why? Because I needed to improve my agility and reduce the impact on my body during break falls and throws, which will be heavily incorporated in my first 3 months of training at the Dojo. So with 6 weeks to go I am resolute in meeting this goal and hope to show that when the crunch comes your goals are achievable no matter how hard they seem, as long as you have a purpose, the passion for change, a professional plan and the courage to execute it. Next weigh-in is March 6, so stay tuned! Matt Weighed in today at 82.9kg. Awesome effort Matt we are almost there. Kincumber Gym
