21.01.2022 Quick update on our activities! As you know we are slammed until - and into - 2021, however, we are still available to quote and schedule future works. Shaun and the boys are working hard in the lead up to Christmas, and Shaun and Dannielle will be working most weekends now as well. ... Along with the office side of things, Dannielle is studying Building Materials as an elective in her last term of university, which involves usage, properties and durability of materials. Also, standards, innovation, efficiency and waste minimisation with regards to sustainable construction. Sustainable construction is not widely practiced (particularly in regional areas) as yet, but it's definitely in the future, and we'd love to eventually integrate it in our works (where affordable and manageable). 11.01.2022 Hi everyone. Wow, what a couple of weeks! We returned from our week off and are straight back into big days as Christmas quickly approaches. Whenever we go away, we are always checking out the buildings and architecture. Bangkok has everything ranging from dilapidated canalside residential dwellings to seemingly endless skyscrapers. Its actually one of the top 10 cities in the world for the largest number of skyscrapers (Approx 500 operational & 80 under construction)!... One of our favourites is the King Power MahaNakhon, developed by a team including German architect Ole Scheeran. The building is often described as looking pixelated, however, as the parents of a huge Marvel fan, I think I kind of like it because it looks like the Hulk climbed the outside.. in a spiral Either way, its an amazing example of unconventional modern design. The two amazing photos of MahaNakhon I pinched from the internet because we didnt get that close, the canal and distant photo show the huge variety in Bangkok buildings, and the one with the sun through the clouds is just my favourite shot from the hotel (opposite direction of skyscrapers though). 02.01.2022 What words come to mind when you think of brick buildings? Traditional.. Enduring.. Maybe a bit old school? If you look into it, brickwork is being used in modern architecture in some pretty amazing ways. Check it out: 1. Evry Cathedral in France. This one has been around for almost two decades now, but the exterior and the interior are something to behold. Designed by swiss architect Mario Botta.... 2. Example of a modern brick home (Instagram - The Brickies Wife). Love the different finishes which include recycled bricks, Blackbutt (hardwood) blades, and Colourbond. 3. Example range of coloured concrete blocks (BCP Building Products). Think like your coloured pavers.. 4. Glazed brick feature wall (Pyrolave Australia). They are glossy and fabulous. You can also get smooth-pressed bricks which have a metallic finish, and tiles/cladding systems also. 5. Brick cladding feature wall. Yes, you can have a brick wall (or a "brick house") that actually.. isn't. Now, we aren't brickies, and admittingly you need to have your big wallet out for some of the more designer brickwork, but it's still fun to see what's happening in the world of contemporary architecture.
