13.01.2022 5 thoughts on athletic development Christian Woodford B.App.Sci (HONS) #1 ... As a performance coach who trains non strength sport athletes I always laugh when athletes or other coaches talk about their strength numbers. Remember who you are training ...lifting is not their sport and as such chasing numbers in the gym on your traditional strength lifts (squat, bench, deadlift, bench pull etc) should NOT be the goal. Yes strength is VITAL for ALL athletes as it compliments and facilitates ALL other bio motor qualities (power, speed, agility, endurance) and reduces chance of injury BUT just stupidly focusing on increasing your squat by 5kg when you are all ready 1.75-2 X BW (relative to your body weight) will most likely not make you better at your sport. Strength training is a means to the end ..NOT the end. Remember your goal is athletic performance & injury reduction. #2 Junior athletic development in Australia is NON existent! The issue here stems from the lack of understanding on the importance of athletic development for the junior athlete. In MY opinion you have a greater impact on an athletes career than when they are older. It's during this time when the athletes nervous system is highly adaptable to change. This is where proper coaching is needed to learn the fundamental motor patterns (hinge, squat, bridge, lunge etc). If we started junior athletes in high performance programs earlier we would see a higher caliber of athlete in Australia ...a house can NOT be built without its foundations. #3 When we talk about performance testing most athletes will talk about their bench press! This is an indicator of upper body strength which is important BUT physical performance tests such as; Speed Vertical jump Broad jump Will give you the coach a greater understanding of the athletes potential than just bench press. The lower body carries the athlete and as such emphasis must be placed on understanding how vital these tests are to athletic performance. #4 If you have an athlete who wants a harder or more "complex" program just tell them to overload the program by; A. Lift a heavier load & B. Move the weight faster (intent) 99% of athletes DO not (Repeat ...DO not) need complex programming ...they just need to do the basics at a HIGH level. Most athletes have not mastered the basics first and as such have not laid the foundations needed for sustained performance. Athletic development in my mind all revolves around mastering BASIC/fundamental motor pattens. Athletes that are movement competent (BIG 6) on these primal patterns are more efficient & physically dominate in their sport (all other things like skill being equal). There might be 1000 exercises out there to use for programming but in reality there are only 6 in my opinion that matter. #5 The best injury reduction/prevention program is just a well developed program. Saying that tho areas which I really focus on for ALL athletes; - VMO - critical for stabilising the knee ...most athletes with knee issues (post ACL) have low activation - Glutes - protects the knee, hip, lower back & hamstrings - Posterior shoulder (upper back) critical because most athletes are overdeveloped through their anterior chain (posture, mirror mentality) and many have shoulder issued - Recovery, recovery & recovery ...really staring to see the correlation with recovery & performance with my athletes. Eating small meals will stoke your metabolic fire. 5. Don't eat gluten, you'll bloat. 6. You need to do your cardio fasted to burn fat. 7. Detoxing is necessary to rid your body of toxins prior to your diet. 8. Take this fat burner, it will boost your metabolism. 9. Cut out carbohydrates, insulin spikes are what causes weight gain. 10.
