25.01.2022 Should we be utilising the entire solar surface of the hoof? In a recent talk by Dr Jenny Hagen there was an image that stuck with me that I have sketched below... (pic1). It shows the pressure mat reading difference between a shod and barefoot. Many of my articles have discussed how the whole of the solar surface of the hoof and specifically the caudal hoof structures are designed to work as a singularity. This spreads load, as is evident from pic 1, reduces pressure and load on the heels and aids in the haemodynamic and weight counteraction mechanisms (Pic 2-4). Another factor to consider is that the sole of the hoof contains an extensive network of mechanoreceptors (Bowker et al. 2012, Pic 5), nerve cells that give proprioceptive feedback to the horse about the ground its walking on. How much of this information is lost when the sole and caudal structures are lifted from the ground? This is not a shod vs barefoot argument, other posts have outlined this debate, but it raises the question of whether re-engaging the sole and caudal structures (pic 6) in weight bearing and ground contact could mitigate some of the unintended consequences of protecting the feet. further reading at these links. . https://www.theequinedocumentalist.com//haemodynamic-mecha . https://www.theequinedocumentalist.com/post/barefoot-vs-shod

25.01.2022 This is why I cannot stress enough low sugar and starch diet for horses. We have enough struggles here in the tropics with the grass types including sugar cane which is everywhere.

22.01.2022 Just another day at the office

21.01.2022 This weekend was a huge success with boot gluing for the first time with adhere and dental impression putty innersole....... I'm not going for pretty I'm aiming for comfort and longevity for distance riding with out metal. So a quick 20km up at tepon for the first endurance provided a huge success on or slippery rocky hilly tracks. For the first time ever we came in under heart rate and our lowest final heartrate ever..felt like he had Nike Air runners on and he flew around today #FukMetal #barefootaddict #soundhoof #hoofboots

20.01.2022 Them Hoof Armour feels! Cherokee paint suffering from possible shivers and incredibly thin soles and hoof walls, hyper flexion of hind , smashing legs down limbs unable to hold fronts up for long due to the thin soles and rakes hoof away. She does how ever try very hard for me during trims to push through and is understanding of what we are doing, She shows her gratitude after each trim, but she is one big strong girl. .... We just do a light balanced trim focusing on a comfo...rtable heel. And take lots of time, giving her back her feet as often as she needs them. Due to the rock hard ground in Koah we are trialing hoof armour to help in her rehab process as she is 8 months out of metal shoes. I would of got hoof photos but due to her condition it takes 2 other helpers to help support her while I trim and sometimes keeping the legs up long enough for a photo is challenging so next time. 19.01.2022 Sheered heel case study Rainer Arab/Welsh/Stock 12yr You can change the change the dynamics of a distorted heel bulb area. Frog trimming, correct heel height and rockering all play a huge part in this on a shorter trim cycle. ... Horse has scar tissue on foot. Trimmed paying maticulous caution to heel height and a balanced trim on a 3 week trim cycle over 12 month period. Heels appear less constricted, with changes in digital cushion and signs of less heel distortion in this area. Seat of the corn area on sheered side has stopped growing to compensate for heel/foot imbalance issues when left longer than 5 weeks for a trim. Great to see the heels, digital cushion and hoof change over time... Absolutely love bare hoof rehab work..... And making positive hoof changes for beautiful horses...

16.01.2022 Seeing a lot of hoof abscess issues in horses as of late we are having a bit of extended wet/cold at the moment..... Especially horses on Rain forest pasture, horses grazing on or near tropical funa and soils seem to struggle with the worst hoof issues. Hooves have a lot to cope with here in our tropical climate. Getting pretty good at getting the poultice procedure routine down packed!

13.01.2022 Something to think about....

12.01.2022 Some great points in this article. Be on the look out for the signs, with the continuous levels of rain and copious amounts of grass around at the moment, it's definately something that needs to be monitored.

09.01.2022 Out on a trimming job today. I've had to stop for horses & cows but a first with goats and so many of them just running a muck! Such a stunning part of North QLD.

07.01.2022 Everyone meet the real spirit. Yep he's real! He's a Quarab and just a lovely boy..... Great feet even his interesting one..which is soft at top of coronet band and shows some what of a reoccurring blood blister..... Watch this space for his ongoing case study..he is sound, has good sole thickness., great wall thickness. Nice heel first landing on all 4....calm and gentle boy... More photos to come... But its come alone nicely after just 3 trims. He is always happy to see me and now lifts each foot for me to trim without me asking for them

05.01.2022 Beautiful domesticated Brumby Cascade! With all the rain his feet are amazing no stress lines and pretty symmetrical hooves. Never any top dressing needed. Even had a big gallop kicking those heels and mud up after todays trim to show me how happy is with work I do on his feet.... These horses are so tough. His owner took me on due to his trust issues, but he's always happy to see me and today when he did he came to me.

04.01.2022 Now that is a beautiful foot
