24.01.2022 Last night we had a photo exhibition/storytelling event in a laneway in Surry Hills. It was a partnership between Neighbourhood Matters, Sydney Alliance, Surry ...Hills & Valleys, artist AstraHoward (Village Voices) and other local community organisations and people like Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre, Streetlevel and Belvoir St theatre. Our purpose was to hear the stories of locals as they experienced COVID-19. We heard stories of struggle, hope, reorientation and survival. We heard from charities, local businesses, disability advocates and international students all impacted by the pandemic. Our hope is that we meet again early next year to see what this local group can do to keep listening to the stories of the voices of those who are not usually heard and then take action to bring about change in our neighbourhood and city. 23.01.2022 @CityofSydney is seeking feedback on proposed planning controls that will help re-energise Sydney’s $4 billion night-time economy and create more opportunities for creative and cultural activities. The draft planning proposals, which are now on public exhibition, allow existing shops and businesses to trade until 10pm without any additional approval, help protect live entertainment venues across the city, and create more opportunities for small scale cultural activities to be... held in existing retail, office and community spaces. Now is the time to breathe life into the night-time and cultural life of our city, Lord Mayor Clover Moore said. Small businesses and creative and cultural industries are facing significant challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic, with many forced to close or restrict their operations. You can view the proposal and give your feedback at sydneyyoursay.com.au. Submissions close 5pm on Wednesday 18 November 2020.

22.01.2022 New-kid-on-the-block Henrietta Chicken got a great review from Terry in last weeks Good Food. The lines are blurring between eat-in and takeaway, as they both lean in, determined to meet in the middle. Its happening because take-home is creeping closer to restaurant quality, and because restaurants need to be more accessible and inclusive. Henrietta, the brainchild of Ibby Moubadder of the nearby Nour and Cuckoo Callay, is probably the first well see of many such restaurant/takeaway mash-ups.

11.01.2022 An informative post and food for thought from City of Sydney Councillor Jess Miller s page: Ever looked out over an urban landscape and wondered, "why arent there solar panels (or gardens) on every roof?" Fortunately, Department of Planning, Industry and Environment in collaboration with University of Technology Sydney are doing just that.... But researchers need your help! Please (if you live in an apartment or town house) do or share this short survey to better understand the limitations and opportunities for installing solar panels on strata-titled apartment buildings, town houses and villas. https://utsau.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6Ala7u9K9xXzRTn With more than 80% of people now living in these urban housing typographies s and a renewable economic recovery on the cards, this is a critical data-set to help inform immediate and future government considerations. 07.01.2022 Please be aware, if you are a hospitality business owner, that the state government has brought in new measures to keep customers safe and the economy open in NSW. The new measures mostly relate to restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs. But the nsw.gov.au website has comprehensive information for businesses across all industries. As things change, you should keep checking in to make sure youre meeting the latest requirements. There are tough penalties for businesses found to b...e not complying with the public health orders. For licenced premises, that includes a $5,500 fine for the first offence, a 1-week closure for a second offence and up to 1-month closure for third and subsequent offences. Covid safe plans: All businesses must create a Covid safety plan, however up until now registration has been optional for most industries. Now, more business types will need to register their Covid safety plan with the state government. As of publication, this applies to dine-in venues such as cafes, restaurants, pubs, clubs. Things are changing quickly. You can get the latest advice for your industry at nsw.gov.au. If you run a business that doesnt need to be registered, its strongly advised that you register your plan anyway. Registering your business as Covid Safe gives you access to signs to display at your venue. This can reassure potential customers that youre taking the right steps to keep them safe. Registering your Covid Safe plan also gives you access to reports on how your customers rate safety measures at your venue. Booking limits: Right now, cafes, bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs can only accept group bookings of 10 people or less. Physical distancing Venues must follow the 4-square metre rule to calculate how many people are allowed inside. Some larger venues must have a Covid Safe Marshall on duty and visible. Specific requirements are outlined when you create a Covid Safe plan at nsw.gov.au. Stay safe and wash your hands.

02.01.2022 How can social media help raise brand awareness during COVID-19 To support businesses during the pandemic, some social media platforms have launched initiatives to help businesses get back on their feet. Facebook: Shops... Facebook is one of the most popular tools for boosting brand awareness in the social sphere, as it allows businesses to keep in touch with a broad spectrum of audiences and quickly target specific demographics. In May this year, they stepped up their COVID-19 business support by launching Shops. This new feature allows businesses to sell their products directly on the platform or via their website. By helping businesses use Facebook as a digital marketplace for free, they have cut the steps to conversion to help boost businesses sales and allow them to reach more customers. Instagram: Support Small Business Since Instagram is part of the Facebook conglomerate, its no surprise it quickly followed suit when it came to supporting businesses during the pandemic. If you use Instagram, chances are youve already encountered the support small business sticker people have been using to give businesses shout-outs and to share content with their community through the Stories feature. The sticker allows businesses to connect with people who might be interested in them and lends itself to peer-to-peer recommendations, which can be very valuable right now. TikTok: Back to Business Though its not a social media platform in the traditional sense, short-form mobile video app TikTok has made sensational strides since the start of the pandemic, surpassing 2 billion global downloads across iOS and Android devices over the past few months. On the back of this success, they have launched Ads Manager, providing small businesses with a range of creative tools to help them reach new audiences and increase their brand awareness on the app. Theyre also giving away US$100 million in ad credit to small businesses. Their Back to Business program offers two ways of helping small businesses bounce back from the economic downturn caused by COVID-19. Not only will eligible businesses receive a one-time credit of US$300 to spend on Ads Manager, but TikTok is also offering to match any additional spending up to US$2,000, meaning your business could be eligible for a total of US$2,300 in credits.
