25.01.2022 Here’s some good entertainment. Follow the link to watch the interview with Michael Caton. I’m looking forward to this. #RAMSthemovie
25.01.2022 Love seeing Trev getting the attention he deserves! I photographed him a few years ago shearing at Brocklebank...his one million sheep tattoo is about the only tattoo I’ve ever seriously envied! (You can find the link to when I met him in my stories.)
21.01.2022 Unearthed this photo of filling the shed at Terinallum while spending some time in the office today. I managed to tick off a few of the many photo projects that seem to be multiplying daily. The slight down side to photography life is computer time, I don’t think I will ever become a photoshopper, I’d never get away from my desk!
20.01.2022 Ideas on which photo should be the front cover would hugely help me out.x (All the Woolsheds will be named and a basic history included.)
20.01.2022 Not exactly shearing related but it is still sheep...a little Covid project while I wasn’t allowed in the Woolsheds to photograph for my next book on the historic sheds. Comment at the original post for the chance to run a copy, or follow the link to website to order, cheers Tracey.
19.01.2022 So, 'Lambert wants a Jumper' has arrived in time for Christmas. I am so very happy with my first attempt at writing a children's 'story' rather than my usual fu...lly factual children's books. The idea for Lambert came about due to the love so many people had for my pet lambs in their jumpers back at lambing time. We were in lockdown, people all over the world were sad and needed diverting...and Lambert and his friends suited that role perfectly. The idea for his actual story appealed to me because the lockdown made many of us realise what things are most important to us. It's really our family, and close friends, and their welfare, certainly not more 'stuff!' I have begun delivering to my usual retailers today and will continue for the next few days, I will also endeavour tonight and tomorrow to get many of the pre-orders posted out, but allow me some time, I said 'yes' to School photos tomorrow, in addition to doing my usual kinder photos because I refuse to let children miss out on anything else in 2020, so I am under the pump. Thank you so much to everyone for the support of Lambert, but special thanks to Alyshia Mcinnes for her stunning illustrations, to our local Ivory Print who were amazing as always, and to Talina Clara for her editing and proofreading skills. x Edit-Oops, online orders at www.shearinginvictoriaswesterndistrict.com if you can’t find a ‘real’ stockist. 19.01.2022 Do you think we have it tough? Read about the process involved with getting these loads of wool to ports. I have visited a good few Woolsheds with old rail lines and close to rivers for easy relocation of the wool, would have loved to have seen these wagons.
18.01.2022 Amazing! Who’s the oldest shearer you’ve worked with?
18.01.2022 Starting your shearing the week of an unexpected once-in-a-decade weather event is probably not ideal but fortunately with a mix of good luck, good management and all available shelter options we lost only one sheep out of 1500 shorn. But ‘stop it did, in God's good time’ (Said Hanrahan, by John O’Brien) so these particular shorn ones were pretty happy to get back to their paddock. Restarting the shearing on Wednesday and fingers crossed we can get it finished. (Thank you to the many people who messaged me with their concern. X)
15.01.2022 Old Woolsheds. As my weaknesses go, old Woolsheds are right up there with Lindt chocolate, babies of any variety, the ocean and the family (in no particular preference order!) I love them, they speak to me, history seeps from every stone and board... and that’s why my next book is recording all the oldest ones around the district, just like this gem near Darlington that I visited this week. I’ve got most of them locked in or already photographed but if you know a hidden Western district treasure that needs photographing before its history is lost for ever, drop me a message. There’s no cost to the historic Woolshed owner and they even get copies of the photos as thanks for letting me visit.
13.01.2022 What a little legend, good to see he’s looking after his back too, hope he saves his cash/invests in sheep, he’ll be retired soon!!
12.01.2022 Can never see enough shearing photos on these dead spaces.
12.01.2022 This is fun... the matching outfits... but then the way the sheep are shorn!
10.01.2022 We finally had enough good weather to get the shearing finished, also fortunate that professional photography is now allowed to be mask free. Yay, as I'm very keen to get back into the woolsheds to finalize my next book on some of the historic sheds...it's so close to finished but unfortunately a mix of covid restrictions, and workplace health and safety covid concerns meant I just stayed away.
10.01.2022 The Western District lost a wonderful man on Thursday night. John Rentsch, of 'Batesworth', Penshurst, was 82 and passed away suddenly after spending the day doing what he loved...helping around his shearing shed. I have rarely met a man as passionate about shearing, he was often even a little lost for a week or two once it was over. He was much loved by his shearing team, many of whom returned year after year ...and he and his wife, Annette, always prided themselves on looking after them well. John's sons are now continuing that tradition. It has been my pleasure to photograph the Batesworth shearing many times, and I am so thankful to have all of these memories. My deepest sympathy and love to all of John's extended family. RIP John. x *posted with family permission.
08.01.2022 Calico Show bag full of books.
07.01.2022 Okay footy tipping experts, for around the 7th year in a row it’s time for a Grand Final competition. Sadly my team aren’t in (and unlikely to be for quite a few years ) but to add some interest for me let’s see who can guess both the winning team and the correct margin to win over $170 worth of my shearing book, shearing calendar and children’s book range. (Prize pictured) As a Grand Final bonus, all orders on the website between now and Sunday night will receive their choice of a sheet of shearing stencil, farm animals or farm machinery wrapping paper. *The small print- not affiliated with facebook, one entry per person, no edited comments and please check no one has already made the same guess as you because only the first to do so will be the winner. Happy tipping Tracey
06.01.2022 I am up to my ears in projects- calendar choices, book page designs, notebooks... it is all happening. So prepare for the chance to help me make final decisions in coming days (and potentially win stuff!) but right now I’m just taking a break by playing with some black and white.
06.01.2022 *click on photos to see the full information. Forgive me if this is a long way from shearing in the western district, but it is related to shearing, and the realities of keeping sheep in another country. Claire is an expat Brit who married a Swiss shepherd/farmer and documents their life on Instagram (see her page details in the screenshots). Today she answered some questions about how their farming works and I messaged her to get permission to share some info here, so very different to Australia but very interesting nonetheless. Most interesting is that the shearers take the wool they shear and give a small shearing discount because of this.
04.01.2022 Making those fleeces fly at Croxton, Tarrington.
03.01.2022 This looks like a great idea... eco down tube covers in your choice of colours, can even have your name added. (And you are supporting a small business in Tintinara that provides great service.
02.01.2022 I first visited West Cloven Hills for the shearing in 2012 and I always love the chance for a return visit, this year I especially enjoyed seeing the next generation so involved. This year marks the 180th shearing for the Cole family shed, it could well be the oldest continually used Victorian woolshed. West Cloven Hills features prominently in my book, "Shearing in Victoria's Western District" and it's extremely likely they will be featuring again in my next book that will focus on these original sheds and their histories.
02.01.2022 Shearing time! Merino wool may be in a little slump at present but no one dares to tell this proud example of the Western District’s finest! It’s all go here this weekend, trying to ensure dry sheep for a Monday start to our shearing, and full biscuit and slice tins because those shed staff can really eat! My main go-to shearing baking is choc chip bikkies, scones with jam and cream, plum kuchen... and lots of home made sausage rolls and pinwheels. What’s your favourite smoko tucker?
