03.01.2022 As all of our friends and fans would be aware, Shearwater Oysters is exclusively an ongrowing farm, selling juvenile stock to other farms to grow out to fat oysters for consumption. As such, we are not licensed to sell oysters to the public to eat, and therefore do not. So to our surprise, on Thursday of this week we had a visit from Food Safety, investigating a complaint that there was "the possibility of selling oysters for consumption without a license", "dogs are on t...heir Facebook page in and around the sheds" and "the possibility of relaying oysters during closed conditions without a relay permit". Someone has seen either our dogs on the lease while using the river recreationally, or seen our photos on Facebook of them living one of the best lives possible, and felt the need to bypass us and make an official complaint. Firstly, as stated above, we are a wholly ongrowing farm and do not sell oysters to eat. Therefore, dogs are allowed on the premises. We have government employees from many departments visit regularly, and never has it been mentioned. We pass work place audits and again, no issues. We also have authorised relay permits, available on hand. The most frustrating and upsetting part of this whole debacle, however, is the timing. On Monday this week it was discovered that a potentially industry destroying virus had been discovered in Tasmania. Friends and long time customers of ours are directly affected, and the entire industry is currently being impacted in ways ranging from disruptive and challenging at best, to devastating at worst. And three days after that news, as further updates were trickling in of possible spreading of the virus, Food Safety decided it was an appropriate time to send an officer to investigate a clearly rubbish complaint when a simple email asking for copies of our sales records and relay permits would have sufficed. It is with some disappointment we have decided to close our Facebook page. We started it to share with you photos and stories of the unique environment we are lucky enough to work in, but it being used by high ranking government employees to support insubstantial complaints has soured it and we feel it is for the best. Thank you all for your support over the years.
