21.01.2022 Forward planning is sometimes difficult in this agricultural game, but if we can manage some forward planning, and gain control of facets of our production system, we can reap the rewards. In the two newest episodes of our podcast (thank you to all for listening!) we discuss Barbers Pole Worm (#BPW) and #Barbervax with Dr Brown Besier. For those who haven't heard of him, he is THE GURU on BPW one Barbervax. With the wetter warmer conditions, the topic is both timely and ...important. Plan to keep up to date with your monitoring, especially with current seasonal conditions favouring #BPW, these guys are prolific egg producers! The latest episode looks at the impacts of #heatstress on sheep repro. Dr Gordon Refshauge of NSW Department of Primary Industries discusses how the heat can impact adversely on both ewes and rams. Whilst it's not overly hot now, forward planning for joining over the hotter months will be beneficial, so take a listen to this episode, and set yourself up for a successful joining. This may be a simple as setting aside paddocks with better shade for joining. Be sure to download the episodes and have a listen - or create a playlist for harvest time - winning! 16.01.2022 A warning for producers on the Monaro. Several cases of photosensitisation in sheep and lambs have been reported across the Monaro recently. It is believed tha...t this has been caused by sheep grazing on lucerne crops that have cowpea aphid on them. Land managers are strongly encouraged to check their lucerne for the presence of these aphids. If significant numbers are present, we suggest removing stock from these paddocks until the aphid numbers can be controlled and reduced (talk to your local agronomist for options). If animals are displaying symptoms of photo sensitisation, remove them from the paddock and provide shade and shelter from direct sunlight until their condition improves (this could take about a week). Private vet practitioners can assist with pain relief and inflammation control options if required. You can find more information about the symptoms and treatment options in the NSW DPI Prime Fact: https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//photosensitisation-in-stock.pdf If you have any questions or concerns contact your local agronomist, private vet or Local Land Services.

13.01.2022 Managing your ram team starts well in advance of the start of joining. In fact, we recommend it start three months ahead of joining, and in some cases, planning starts before ram selling (buying) season, when you should know exactly how many rams you need to buy to take you to the ideal number for joining. Making sure your team of rams is prepped properly for the 'big game' is not really that different to the Wallabies (or other team of choice for this analogy) training ...during the pre-season - they don't just dust off their boots the day before the game and expect to be at peak performance the next day.... The same goes for your ram team - they need to be managed and prepared ahead of the big game and this requires planning, and carrying out all animal husbandry 12 weeks prior to joining to ensure that they are 'good to go' once joining dates come around. Learn how to ensure your rams are in tip top order for joining at our #RAMpingUpRepro workshop in Armidale that is just around the corner. At these workshops participants will conduct a hands on ram assessment and find out all about what needs to be undertaken as routine management to get the best performance from your rams. We're finishing our 2020 workshops with a final #RAMpingUpRepro workshop in #Armidale on Friday 4th December. Registration is ESSENTIAL, and due to COVID-19 requirements places are STRICTLY LIMITED.
