19.01.2022 ...she was asked by President Elect Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 to serve as Secretary of Labor. She told him only if he agreed with her goals: 40-hour work week, minimum wage, unemployment and worker’s compensation, abolition of child labor, federal aid to the states for unemployment, Social Security, a revitalized federal employment service, and universal health insurance. He agreed. Similar to what she had worked for in New York, her successes became the New Deal, and changed the country and its workers forever. So while you may not know her name, you certainly know her legacy.

19.01.2022 I’m so tired of hearing about how terrible it is that abortions could be legal up until birth. Seriously, do you know ANY women at all who would carry a child inside them for up to 9 months and then on a whim decide they didn’t want it anymore? Have you ever looked into the facts or statistics surrounding late term abortions? Using this argument to deny reproductive rights for women completely belittles women and to me is just a hark back to the dark ages (of not that long ag...o), where amongst other things women weren’t allowed to vote, own property, or be in charge of their own finances because apparently they weren’t capable of it because they were too stupid, or emotional, or something equally as patronizing. It’s time to grow up and stop trying to control women’s bodies. If you believe in personal Sovereignty than a woman’s right to choose what happens to her own body is way up the top of the list of what sovereignty means! Those who find themselves in the heartbreaking position of needing a late term abortion should be fully supported and cared for, not shamed, attacked or denied the right to health care. How about we trust women to make the decisions they need to, to ensure the short and long term health and well-being of themselves and their families... It doesn’t matter how many medical experts or bereaved mothers testify to parliamentary inquiries about the statistical rarity and painful reality of later-term abortions, this myth won’t die and there is no issue I have spent more time fact-checking. I can’t help but think of all the families and doctors implicated in this fear-mongering. These decisions are rare. I think of the Queensland obstetrician and maternal-foetal medicine specialist Dr Carol Portmann, who in her 20 years of experience handling terminations after 20 weeks told me she has only ever performed a termination in the third trimester because the mother’s life has been at medical risk or the foetus has been found to have a severe heart or brain injury and the pregnancy is non-viable. These decisions are hard.
