24.01.2022 Just taking a moment to appreciate the weather today and noticed some very busy insect activity... closer inspection turned out the be the 'bee like' hover fly species Eupeodes corallae. These guys are pollinators, and better yet, their larvae are predators for aphids and scale insects that can destroy your plants and crops. Very happy to see such an active swarm in my front garden (hoping they'll visit the back to lay some eggs near my veggies to keep the pests down)

20.01.2022 Having a play with an old idea made new. I'm renting so I have limitations on what I can do here. This bit of garden gets really dry so I've dug in some 2 inch agriculture pipe to help keep the soil moist below the roots. This should encourage deep root growth in all my veggies resulting in bigger and better crops. 18.01.2022 Its been a while since I've posted, this year has been a challenge for us all and I've been working on a lot of things in the background. I'm in the thick of pruning season at the moment, and while I would usually be coaching I've needed to divert to some maintenance due to contact restrictions. This is a plum tree that has gotten away from the owners and I've helped to bring back under control. 17.01.2022 Found these guys today on my flowering rhubarb plants... at first I thought they were a species of ladybug, a bit of research later and they are actually native carpet beetles. The adults feed on pollen while their larvae feed on animal detritus (wool, feathers, fur etc..). Under the area I found these guys is old carpet (possibly used as a weed suppressant, rental properties have some unusual things underground sometimes) so their larvae must be very happy in this bit of the garden.

15.01.2022 Lifetime goals.... How I would love to see this as standard across all our communities.... You dont have to grow much, you can still buy from shops, but how much better would we all eat with fresh, home grown, seasonal produce added to our daily meals.

05.01.2022 I was very happy to see these guys in my garden today. This species of hover fly look like tiny bees, and while they are excellent pollinators, the larvae of this particular species (Eupeodes corollae) are predators of aphids and some scale species. Winning! 05.01.2022 My Raspberries don't seem to know what is happening. I tied my summer grown canes to the fence a few weeks back, preparing for dormancy and tidying up.... now more fruit!! I just hope we get enough sunlight over the next few weeks for them to ripen (raspberries ripen with hours of sunlight/daylight, not heat. If the days are too short the fruit will become stunted and inedible)
