23.01.2022 Shockwave therapy is a treatment commonly used in sport medicine for pain relief and mobility restoration in soft tissues. Low and high energy shock (acoustic) waves are generated by the machine and move from the probe into the desired structure in a non invasive manner. 23.01.2022 Did you know we use state of the art 3D technology to scan and custom make foot orthotics? Custom made for each person’s foot to maximise comfort and benefit from the orthotics which enhance support, foot function, increase comfort and decrease pain. We also use an Australian orthotic lab to create your orthotics! 23.01.2022 Orthotics come in different shapes and sizes. If you have a pair and are unsure if they are right for you, bring them in and we can give you an opinoin on what needs to be done (this may be that they are working well)! We especially find this is improtant if they were not obtained from a podiatrist. The foot is unique in that it is a complex set of bones that enables you to interact with different terrains and not fall over (hopefully). It is important to understand the force...s that are applied to the feet and how that individually relates to your foot. On average we do 10,000 steps per day and our feet take the weight of our body (we actually times that by 1.5 for walking and 3-4x for running or sports). Custom orthotics are the best bet to get a device that is made for specifically for you. If you have any questions about our custom foot orthotics please contact us or visit our website for more info: https://shellharbourpodiatry.com.au/service-trea/orthotics/

22.01.2022 Do my kids need orthotics? This is a common question that our podiatrists get from rightly concerned parents in our clinic. Generally speaking not all kids need orthotics. However, orthotics can be beneficial in a number of cases including; if they are suffering from foot pain, are toe walking, experiencing growing pains, is a family history of foot issues, wearing shoes unevenly and many more. ... We have a podiatric (foot) surgeon and osteopath in our clinic and have great relationships with local health providers. If referrals to other health professionals are required, we will arrange this for you! If you are even slightly concerned about your child’s foot or lower leg then it is best to get it properly assessed

20.01.2022 It won’t come as a surprise that one of the most common topics I discuss with my patients is shoes. For those patients that run regularly, shoes become all the more important given the increased and repetitive stress that is placed on the feet and legs during running. Runners come in many different shapes and sizes and vary greatly in the speeds and distances they run. Running shoes need to vary accordingly. 20.01.2022 A recent study suggested that as many as 9.6% of people are suffering from heel pain at any one time with women slightly more at risk. Conditions that can cause heel pain include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, bursitis, tarsal coalition and gout. This pain can be debilitating and stop the person from exercising, playing sport and even make getting out of bed be extremely painful. Podiatrists are experts in treating these conditions, seeing these presentations daily in the clinic, so if you are one this large percentage suffering heel pain it is important to know there is help available.

17.01.2022 During pregnancy, hormonal changes cause your skin to lose its elasticity and moisture. Swelling and increased weight, particularly in the 3rd trimester, places extra strain on the skin around the heels. Thankfully there are steps you can take to address this. Watch for our Top 5 Tips for treating and preventing dry and cracked heels during pregnancy. Or head over to our website for the full article: https://bit.ly/38qti5Q... Filmed at our Sydney surgery.

15.01.2022 Podiatrists regularly conduct both full neurovascular and biomechanical assessments as a screening tool for any potential issues. 14.01.2022 Each foot consists of at least 100 muscles, ligaments and tendons which work together to provide support, stability and mobility whilst we work, stand and play. It is important that we continue to maintain strength and load in these structures so they can continue to do their important job, as if they are underperforming injury and foot pain can result. Podiatrists are specialists in rehabbing and training these structures so that your foot can once again move without pain. Our new evidence based shockwave machine (using the STORZ shockwave mechanism) is the ideal answer to treating heel pain, Achillies pain, neuromas and calf pain. We recommend 6 sessions spaced weekly. Get in touch or make an appointment online!

12.01.2022 Podiatrists are able to assess foot and lower limb function to detect any abnormalities, weaknesses or potential issues within their gait (walking) cycle which may be causing pain Once these are identified a treatment plan, which may include a stretching and strengthening program, footwear changes, orthotic prescription and/or soft tissue therapy/Shockwave therapy, will be developed to restore function and enable you to move pain free. This is required for any foot, ankle or knee pain including plantar fasciitis, bunions, runners knee, ankle sprains, Achilles tendonitis, runners knee and much more. If you are suffering from any of these conditions please get in touch with one of our podiatrists

08.01.2022 Diabetes, or a touch of sugar as it is sometimes referred, damages the nerves of our body, firstly in our feet. Extra sugar in the blood over a long period of time can result in a lack of feeling in our feet. This is dangerous as most people are not aware this has happened and because they dont feel the pain, can end up with serious injury. The first sign of decline in the nerves is any sort of numbness, pins and needles or burning in the feet or toes. People with diabetes should see a podiatrist at least annually for a full neurovascular assessment which includes checking blood flow and nerve function. If there is any abnormality detected at this further assessments may be undertaken by your podiatrist

07.01.2022 An ingrown toenail occurs when part of the nail - most commonly the inside or outside edge - grows into the skin surrounding it. This can cause localised irritation, inflammation and discomfort. In more severe cases, the nail can actually penetrate the skin leading to an infected ingrown toenail. Initially symptoms are mild. You may feel some discomfort in tight fitting shoes or when the blankets are resting on the end of your toe in bed. If left untreated an infection may develop. The toe may become more swollen, red and pus may be present. There may be toenail pain even with the lightest pressure on the nail and life can become pretty miserable!
