24.01.2022 When your camera settings are so messed up, you can't be bothered trying to sort it in the water and battle on...what went wrong between home checks and the ocean....geez. Nice in though, 19C , 6+mtrs viz, the sea has settled..still that long hanging "whale snot " around.

23.01.2022 A mad, hectic weekend of teaching and guiding with a mix of sharks of all sorts, turtles, seals, Devil Fish, nesting Frogfish and our octopus mums.. scooters de...ep and shallow, arches and caves, and sea mounts. Wow ,and it all happened with amazing people, visibility and water temp. 20mtr vis today, 21C water... Bushies was cloudy with reports of 18C outer bay centre. More than likely runoff settling after the torrential downpour of the morning. Sharks were in the inner bay in 2mtrs of water.. I hope to get in later for a spider hunt ...we'll see. See more

23.01.2022 Another sizeable crew this morning went out to see the turtle, some met up with him in the afternoon. Sea Spiders galore and our second occy mum pushing out the... hatch...My chance is Monday Absolutely atrocious vis to 18 mtrs and beyond that a clear layer out to 8 mtrs vis. A dark green / brown cloud hanging 2 mtrs above us. Bubbles disappearing into the gloom. But in that 18C clearer water the critters were out. Tommorow light variable winds , a decreasing swell should set up for a great days diving..that easy, that simple. See you there. See more

23.01.2022 This gives me so much joy

23.01.2022 Bling bling Also I would have left him there, was having a nice algae snack.

22.01.2022 It’s funny but also makes me wanna hold my pee

22.01.2022 " It's not easy being green" sung Kermit, but it sure sets the scene for a space type horror movie. All our skills are being tested of late and I think will be ...tested for couple of days more. Our Sydney friends are reporting similar conditions in places and down south a diver Emma who rides the shark spotting chopper says it's the same down there. With the offshore set to blow one way or another till mid arvo Saturday, the seas will flatten nicely, before a little lift in the evening and easing and bumping again Sunday evening and easing over Monday. The wind turning briefly northerly Saturday evening and a little south Sunday arvo. The vis...well charge or buy your torch, and come for a swim, it will be interesting. But why should that stop you, it is a different site, different critters behaving differently.. The temp was definitely up in places on Thursday and I did see an 18C pop up. So we'll be in and shots of this ocean are truly awesome when these algae and plankton rich waters move in. It will go and it could happen overnight. We live and hope. World Octopus Day today, and we love and care for our cheeky 8 legged friends at Bass Point , so here's to you , may your suckers be strong, eels be few, and lobsters be plenty. See more

22.01.2022 The long weekend gone and those NE winds ruled the ocean, Bushrangers Bay was the go and the parking was deadlier than any shark within 20km. The road side line...d with cars and each one a potential $220 for the council.. The vis today was reported by many as very good in the inner bay and channel, 8-10mtr vis and 16-18C .The outer bay the vis was down . Shark reports were up to 3..with a few octopus , eels and rays. A check of the whales this evening showed a much improved entry at The Gutter, and a red algal bloom just offshore that has the potential for bioluminescence if it could beat the south change tonight. The rest of the week is looking like a wet spell coming, and a little cooler..Enjoy.. Me, shop slave today, so a couple of recents.. See more

19.01.2022 Well after a cooler southerly change overnight and into mid morning the wind will turn NE all weekend and strong after lunch both Saturday and Sunday. Best tim...es to dive will the morning sessions on the weekend and afternoons in Bushies or even Malonies for a change. The swell will bump up from the NE Sunday but other places open up.. Todays dive was one of mixed vis and warm water, but a building east swell saw conditions worsen during the dive. The change tonight should fix that a little. See more

18.01.2022 A not very spectacular dive at The Gutter this morning. With only 3mtr vis at best, cross current from the 2mtr swell sets coming in every ten minutes or so.. T...he entry and exit in between sets was quite simple.. Definitely on the side of getting warmer today, though the green ,snotty water had the whales steering clear and nudibranchs hiding like a cold winter willies just out of the wetsuit...yep all shrivelled up and tucked away.. The turtle was back but no Blue Devils...no shots...but this is basically how it looked.. It will improve and the weekend is far enough away to give us time. See more

16.01.2022 A nice dive today, at The Gutter, the water warmer than the weekend, and a little clearer , though still lots of jellyfish, and strands, we could see one side o...f The Gutter to the other at 16 mtrs...call it what you like. My Eon Core holding at 16C and above. It was a case of the beast amongst the beauties and the three girls enjoyed the improving conditions..always a fun crew. Heaps more rays about today, more than I have seen in a few weeks. Nudi's of all sorts out and about and those occy eggs, seem slow to mature, maybe this cooler water slows their maturity, who knows. Mum is looking strong and healthy ..a week or so to go... Todays shots and profile. See more

16.01.2022 A really nice day for diving and the arrival of a current dotted with a few clear jellyfish in clear water the best we have had in a while. It created a few nav... issues, both the clarity and the current. For some...10mtr+ vis and warm all the way through... Plenty of critters about with the octopus hatching on again. The swell stopped and the wind hardly blew... You had to be there. See more

16.01.2022 After a bit of an issue this morning, bloody kids....we got diving. A dead calm Gutter and dark overhead skies, throw in a raging current east to west all the w...ay out and back and you have an interesting dive. Vis was 6 maybe 8mtrs in places, jellyfish galore and again green was the scene.. John ,Kate and myself had it under control. Sharon"s occy ,upside down planting egg strings and the turtle and friends..Not too bad. See more

14.01.2022 As expected that NE wind yesterday left us with a sloppy present this morning. Not unexpected totally so the class and crew took on carpark capers at Bushies . ...Reports were nice on the inside bay drifting back to the snotty conditions out deeper and wider. The early crew caught sight of a couple of sharks , but they appeared spooked by the on going number of divers heading in. A check of tomorrow's map shows that southerly change arriving in the late afternoon or evening, later than we would have liked , and those strong NE winds preceding it...maybe a storm to boot..So for us down Bass Point it could be a chance to visit some of the south side...or the crew could tackle Bushies again.. One thing for sure, for whales only 30mtrs off the rocks, Bass Point is really performing, worth a look. Some recent shots. See more

14.01.2022 I had a very nice solo dive this morning, no further out than the Graveyard Pile. It can be that easy if you like. 8-10mtr vis with those strands of snot that ...make wide angle a nightmare....one day soon maybe. The temp 19C in shallow and 18C at depth. The swell was non existent , but a little choppy on the surface..nothing to bother about at all. The weekend, these NE winds will continue Saturday ad the morning dive at The Gutter is going to be fine. The wind turning S in the evening and setting Sunday up as a cracker . Simple as that..come along and join. So a couple from the days dive.. See more

13.01.2022 Frank's video of todays dive off The Gutter with Mick and the crew..Smiles everywhere ,how we like it.

12.01.2022 So knuckle head leaves his video light out there this morning, and with tasks chopping and changing this afternoon, finally all the stars aligned and 5.30 PM sa...w me back in to recover the light. What a difference a few hours makes in the ocean. There were cold thermoclines where there were none this morning , the raging current had turned full 180 degrees...and then turned back again 15mins later...a mini whirlpool. The vis had dropped to 4 mtrs max and the water green. The ocean was nuts...no way to predict anything today.. So light collected ,and a couple of more shots from the evenings dive. See more

12.01.2022 Tastes about 35 years old, bitter

12.01.2022 And now for something completely serious

10.01.2022 Wow, it got better today. I was instructing today and scootered the team straight off The Gutter, Bass Point to Lost Lens Reef at 28mtrs...20C all the way, and... without doubt and without kidding we had 30mtr vis out there. It could have been anywhere on the planet..I kid you not. We could see forever. It has easily been a couple of years since we have witnessed anything like it. Not much else to say really except an early start tomorrow, and hoping it holds ...Please... A couple of more shots from yesterday.. See more

09.01.2022 I’m just gonna leave this here......

07.01.2022 Does anyone have a +2 black mask that may or may not belong to them?? That may or may not possibly belong to Mick?? Thanks

06.01.2022 The day started early for me dropping into an already filling Bushies carpark at 6.30 am to possibly assist with the team's Instructor Exam. Well Bushies was on... her best behaviour and as expected improved dramatically on Fridays attempt to imitate liquid fertiliser..at 6mtrs vis was top to bottom , though dirtier out wider.16C . The Gutter where we dived was a different ball game. When we arrived the cries of 13C and 2mtr vis from an early diver, sending shivers down the out of town diver's spines did not eventuate, as usual.. 3-4 mtr vis in very organic ,snotty water. 3 divers lengths was no issue and navigation to the Blue Devil Cave was easy as. The water temp on Suunto Eon was a nice 16C and some others dropped to 15C... A little quiet today, not surprising, but whales are starting to move in, well worth a look from shore..some only 20-30 mtrs off shore.. Tomorrow that NE will pump, up to 30 knots, so the early session is best. Again I think Bushies will improve, but the parking situation won't..The Gutter will continue on much the same ,maybe a little better. We will be in , no doubt...have compass will swim... See more

06.01.2022 Bonnie is going for a dive Friday morning at 10am All level of divers welcomeBonnie is going for a dive Friday morning at 10am All level of divers welcome

05.01.2022 Clearly it was a as predicted another helluva good day to dive at Bass Point. The crew dived the The Gutter on scooters and finned it with 15mtr vis, 21C water ... and critters everywhere . Todays shots from all the local and visitors clearly prove it.. Me, I went out to the SE Pinnacle, The Arch and Cave on scooters the vis 15 to 20 mtrs. 8 GNS in Bushies in milky water and one in our cave. At 32 mtrs finally found a Mick Harris sea spider. but only had an un co-operative Go Pro, geez I hate Go Pros... So I will have to do a return hunt armed to the teeth. Diving tomorrow will rock...That simple...Where ya gunna be. See more

04.01.2022 The weekend was huge, despite the Point being closed today ,it was brutal. A trip to and in The Kiama Blowhole and North Cave on scooters this morning was the b...est place to be but setting up and moving gear in that fan forced oven was nuts. The massive rays that lurk that part of the cost are hard to believe, but when you see them you know.. The sight of a solid brass cast lion and base just out of the Blowhole was strange...weighing about 3kg and clean as a whistle...mmmm. 9 scooters out all up, the water temp 16-17C the vis varying 3- 8 metres. And this has to be one of the toughest nav dives we do..but always worth the effort . No camera for me, so some recents..Fresh shots tomorrow. See more

04.01.2022 A massive weekend, a great crew of divers ,plenty to see, and despite the push, the vis was good and the temp on the up. Regardless of what anyone says, the smi...les at the end of the dives were proof and the fact so many went back for a second dive was even better. Thanks to everyone who was there...you were special.. We will wait for the next weekend weather as the maps develop , a south wind at this stage is looking good for Saturday.. See more

04.01.2022 So the weekend nears, and what will that vis do? It was definitely better and a tad warmer on Monday but reports varied after that. The common factor, everyone... is enjoying their diving regardless. Saturday morning looking the better as that northeaster kicks up again. It will not only excite the passing whales into leaping about, it will also have hoards of fanatical whale photographers excited as the wind picks up in the arvo. Sunday will see the NE breeze blow most of the night and a south change early to midday, with a little rain to boot. Of course , I'm tripping on wacky dive expedition to much colder waters, so it has to rain .. Vis has been 3-8 mtrs so anything can happen there, the water temp , warmer on Monday, with a huge warmer swirl on the chart just north of us, soooooooo close guys. We'll be in, no doubt.. Popped the camper up today, all good ? . 12yr old original tyres delaminating, fit spare set, find the dog has devoured the electrics, repair that, smash head into axle, blood everywhere, yell for a towel, the usual response from the cook "why?"...can't fix that.. the smashed head. Thanks to Shellharbour Tourism for the prize in the most prestigious photo contest in the area at the moment, and the goodies were yummy..See you all in. See more

04.01.2022 That was fun day off, regardless of not getting a dive in. It starts by the smell of a fresh cooked omelette , and I end up starving for tests till 2.30PM. Not ...allowed anything. Then amazingly in 1 1/2 days after ordering online my well reviewed 40 volt hedge cutter turns up. I give it a go , it is awesome. No time for the hedge , my "lady " problems require an ultrasound. Now at this point what you are thinking is impossible...you learnt that at school. It's never reassuring when the ultrasound tech leaves you to look at the shots, she calls two other techs over, pointing and chatting and she comes back to do left side ,back and right side shots for the next ten minutes and when she lands on that broken floating rib from a few years ago, that's gold. I return home kebab in hand, kebab I said, and woof it down. Bung on an extra 3 bubble bars and all is better. Now to the hedge. I pull the trigger ....nothing...again...nothing. I have again purchased the runt of the pack. What do we do , box it up and send it back...No way...Out come the tools, this hedge has needed a trim for months and it's gunna happen. Bit by bit ,seals are broken, the warranty shot in seconds, in no time at all it's in bits. The main gear is siezed on the shaft, a little more hammering, drill out the gear centre , good quality heavy steel gears as well, and back together, no spares left. That has to be good. The moment of truth, it turns on and hedge gets a #4. It's a weapon. The only difference between a bad hedge cut and a good one is a couple of weeks , with some rain. So, to the weekend and a bit of of a mix and with the map changing heaps with every update , it's looking mostly like NE winds again, strong in the afternoons. A chance late Saturday it could go SW... The morning dives will be the go, and that swell will lift a little from the NE, but other sites become diveable. The water is holding at 19C all the way through, and the vis seems to be around that 6-8mtrs, but a day of cracker 10-15mtrs is due. So we'll be in, we know the entry and exit. So come along, we would love to see you. Shots from Monday and my hedge cutter after surgery .. See more

01.01.2022 Another big crew this morning at The Gutter, and along with the early whale watchers, parking was a premium. and most of all ,everyone having a great time. The ...vis today up around 5 mtrs , navigation was a breeze.. Water temp on many computers down to 14C but still I never got there , 15C the worst. The ocean was brighter by the time we got in, but the number of jellyfish above 4mtrs off the bottom was incredible. OK, lessons for divers from the weekend, a diver surfaces rushed and alone a very long way out, it turns out 50 BAR in his tank, he waves his hand over his head. Is he OK, or is he really in trouble, that signal means distress, so the only diver still in a wetsuit makes for the entry, fins and mask in hand to get to him. As we watch he gives the arm straight up signal, the next and confirming distress signal. Our diver jumps and swims to him. At this point as the distressed diver is a little closer to the exit , when rescuer and victim meet, he, the victim asks why is here and proceeds to ignore the rescuer.... When his two buddies finally surface in The Gutter, without so much as a search or surprise, never surfacing to look for their missing buddy the victim acts all cool and collected.. This is not how it works...never did ..never will. A little thanks and respect.. Manage your air , stay with your buddy and have lost diver procedure in place.. It is called Dive Planning. Surfacing 200mtrs to sea, low on air and alone is not dive planning. And panicking and giving distress signals then ignoring your rescuer is a sign of poor training and lazy dive skills. Don't be this diver...please, very disappointing display. No camera for me, tomorrow there will be... This arvo's quick drone adventure at The Gutter. See more
