21.01.2022 To the person who wrote If we don’t educate our kids, they will end up being Carneys! Assuming Carneys are uneducated is a common misconception by the publi...c. Most Carnies (or Showman as preferred) are highly intelligent people, with a serious work ethic (12+ hours a day for 3, 4, 6, to 10 months straight). Did you know that it requires special training and certifications to operate certain rides? It’s a combination of physics and engineering plus not to mention the knowledge required to get through the daily safety inspections, maintenance and even just laying out the lot itself. (Now I’m not saying that carnivals sometimes don’t end up with some bad ride jocks, but those guys never last very long.) It’s always a family tradition, handed down generation to generation, believe it or not people choose this wanderlust lifestyle. Those in the office often have business and accounting degrees. Many of the concessionaires have degrees as well, mostly business or hospitality. I, for one, have my Master’s Degree, and am a classically trained flutist who has performed in Carnegie Hall. Not just anyone can run a concession stand, most of the public are not cut out for the job. It’s nothing like running a restaurant or catering, it’s much more difficult, because of the sheer volume of people you are serving. On top of that we are responsible for customer service, keeping inventory, ordering or running for stock (daily), managing contracts, employees and business connections nationwide, plus not even to mention the maintenance required of a mobile kitchen. You cannot be a shy person in this job, as we interact with thousands upon thousands of people. We do the work very few are willing to do, to try and bring joy to your day and make it more magical.
