21.01.2022 Today is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty! Quality living standards are defined in Article 11 of International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, as "the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing and housing, and to the continuous improvement of living conditions. SHAC believes human rights are paramount to the wraparound support service we offer to families in Cairns.... #endpoverty

19.01.2022 About a year ago, Di and Cliff successfully applied for a lawn mower through the NILS program at SHAC. Di and Cliff used the lawn mower to build their local business, Di & Cliff's Vacate and Mowing Services, which services families across Cairns with vacate cleaning and yard maintenance. After paying off their previous No Interest Loan, Di and Cliff visited SHAC today to apply for specialised lawn-care equipment through our NILS program to further grow their fantastic service. What a great outcome for this family, and the community of Cairns! SHAC has been fortunate to assist Di and Cliff in their journey, and wish them all the best with budding business - well done! THANK YOU for the food hampers and personalised gift packs you have provided (yet again) for families in SHAC crisis accommodation this Christmas. 16.01.2022 ATTENTION: Covid-19 related emergency relief vouchers available. Many Australians are still facing the impacts of Covid-19 due to loss of employment, reduction in work hours and/or mandatory quarantine. If this applies to you or anyone you know, please consider applying for Emergency Relief vouchers. The process is as simple as filling out a few details online and going through a quick assessment over the phone. Please apply through this link: https://www.shac.org....au/covid19-assistance If you had any other questions about these vouchers, feel free to call SHAC reception (4080 7400) and ask for Monique. 16.01.2022 The staff at SHAC wish all of our clients, colleagues, the broader human services sector, and the community of Cairns a very Merry Christmas! Enjoy this festive day celebrating with family and friends. Stay safe!

15.01.2022 This week, the SHAC team got together to arrange our own (belated) Harmony day lunch. Since restrictions are making it difficult for us to travel, we each decided to bring in some dishes that reminded us of home. After that, we got the opportunity to hear the stories behind some amazing recipes and appreciate the diverse cultures that have shaped the different members of our team. Let us know what dish you would bring if you had your own Harmony day lunch and why!

14.01.2022 We want to celebrate the students and staff at AFL Cape York House, who have (once again) generously donated finances raised at their annual Women's Domestic Violence Charity High Tea to SHAC. Check out the video linked, which captures the heart behind the event - fantastic work and thank you to you all. SHAC will utilise funds donated to provide emergency relief to SHAC families in need, including families escaping domestic violence. https://www.youtube.com/watch

13.01.2022 Thank you to Access Community Housing for organising and arranging this barbeque in honour of White Ribbon Day. It was good to see community members come together to raise awareness about domestic violence and gendered abuse. In Australia: - The leading cause of homelessness for women is domestic and family violence - On average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner. - One in every two women have experienced sexual assault during her lifetime.... We recognise that this violence faced by many women across the country is not okay and we encourage people to get involved in White Ribbon day in any way that they can. This can be as simple as educating yourself or the people around you about violence against women. 13.01.2022 Today, SHAC attended the Anti-Poverty week event in Cairns - as an opportunity to highlight poverty issues in Australia, and promote access to the NILS program and My Money Program that SHAC offers to individuals and families in need. The day was a great success!

12.01.2022 This year on International Tenants' Day (9 October), the Cairns community will come together to recognize and celebrate tenants and housing providers who have made a positive contribution to the rental industry at the inaugural Rental Industry Awards event. SHAC is excited to partner with Tenants QLD and other local services to shine a light on the importance and significance of renting in FNQ - #rentingmatters ! We look forward to celebrating the outstanding efforts of tenants and housing providers alike, including real estates. If you would like further information, or would like to nominate a tenant/service, please see the attached photos, or contact Jenny Brown at Tenants QLD on 07 4241 0015 or [email protected]

11.01.2022 ‘A week that celebrates and acknowledges our past, our present and looks with hope towards our future’ In honour of NAIDOC week, we proudly celebrate the first nations creators, builders, nurturers and leaders across the country. We also recognise the rich cultural histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have populated and cared for Australian land for over 65,000 years. 11.01.2022 In responding to the evolving COVID-19 situation in the community of Cairns, across QLD, and more broadly in the nation of Australia, SHAC is currently operating with limited face-to-face interaction. Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our staff and clients. Where possible, client and community contact will continue to occur through phone calls, email, and video calls. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this may cause, and thank you for your patience as we walk this uncharted path together. If you require assistance, please give us a call on 07 4080 7400 or email on [email protected] . SHAC staff look forward to seeing you soon. Stay safe, well, physically distant (1.5m), and remember - wash your hands!

09.01.2022 This morning, some of SHAC's My Money Program team attended ASIC's National Indigenous Financial Capability Strategy consultation in Cairns. What a great opportunity to explore strategies with other service providers in the region - collaboration in the sector is always key to great service provision and getting the best outcomes for clients in the community.

09.01.2022 The SHAC team would like to give a big thank you to the Red Rose Foundation Australia and Skill360 Australia who have collaborated in placing a red bench out the front of the SHAC building as a part of the Red Bench project! The Red Rose Foundation launched the Red Bench Project to build a permanent reminder that domestic violence occurs within all of our communities. The presence of a Red Bench in a public location aims to raise public awareness and provide an opportunity for this important issue to remain visible. We are very grateful to be a part of this wonderful initiative. We also hope that this bench acts as a reminder of the prevalence of domestic violence in our community and the need for change. #ChangeTheEnding #RedBenchProject

08.01.2022 SHAC was thrilled to participate in the Cairns Rental Industry Awards Program 2020 with Tenants QLD and other local services. This was an amazing opportunity to recognise the way in which tenants, real estates and housing providers are working together to make a positive influence on the rental industry! We are thankful to everyone involved and are optimistic that we can continue working together to build stronger relationships within the rental industry! #RentingMatters #InternationalTenantsDay

03.01.2022 S T R E S S - L E S S Today, SHAC staff participated in the #stresslessday luncheon as part of Mental Health Week, kindly organised by Worklink. 02.01.2022 While the holiday season may be a time of celebration, it can also create a lot of stress for families who are struggling financially. It is great to see that many Cairns Community members have come together to donate as a part of the Cairns Regional Council Mayors Christmas Cheer appeal. These simple yet generous donations have helped us to spread some well-deserved Christmas cheer to those who need a helping hand this holiday season! https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au//ann/mayors-christmas-appeal

01.01.2022 PSA: we will be closed from 1pm Tuesday 24 December 2019, and will re-open 9am Thursday 2 January 2020.

SHAC is proud of our longstanding partnership with Workways Australia, and look forward to many more years of collaboration in supporting some of the most vulnerable families in Cairns. Thank you, Workways Australia
