24.01.2022 Massive shout out to our friends WeRobotics for receiving the Women and Drones Global Ambassador Award for 2020! They have been awarded this for the work they do in advocating the use of drones for good and their outreach to foster a culture of female empowerment. They are such a valuable and much-respected partner of ours, and we are so proud of them for this award :-) ... https://womenanddrones.com/global-ambassador-werobotics/

22.01.2022 Please don't ever tell me that #drones are just for pretty pictures! If this isn't #STEM, I really don't know what is :) https://www.geonadir.com/ These hyperspectral data are thousands of points that characterise the amount of light reflected and absorbed from different features along a flight line on the reef. As different features reflect and absorb light in different ways, their 'signatures' help us identify what we see. So I can tell the difference between coral and sand for example. I can also tell how much light something is absorbing to help it photosynthesise - cool, huh?!

22.01.2022 Happy #worldsocialenterpriseday! This day is to help raise awareness of all the business that are also social enterprises who trade to intentionally tackle social problems, improve communities, provide people access to employment and training, or help the environment. Here's @SheMaps story. #positivetransaction #socialenterprise #WhoKnew #worldsocialenterpriseday #Shemaps #DiversityMatters #STEMeducation Queensland Social Enterprise Council

17.01.2022 Shhh, my #drone data have some secrets to share! And they want to share with YOU! I have some incredible #multispectral #drone data over Heron Reef that's waiting for your insights. I captured these data with a Parrot Sequoia on a 3DR Solo drone at 20m altitude. You can see the live coral as red just as we see healthy vegetation as red in this type of false colour (near infra red) imagery. You can download the data here: https://www.geonadir.com/... Let me know what you find? #GeoNadir #geospatial #remotesensing #coralreef #multispectral

14.01.2022 Such a good feeling to see a new academic journal article in print! Have a read of our #peerreviewed #openaccess paper https://www.mdpi.com/2504-446X/4/3/57/htm Using Minidrones to Teach Geospatial Technology Fundamentals Abstract: With an increased level of interest in promoting science, technology, engineering, and maths (#STEM) careers, there are many ways in which #drone and #geospatial technology can be brought into the education system to train the future workforce. Ind...eed, state-level government policies are even stipulating that they should be integrated into curriculum. However, in some cases, drones may be seen as the latest toy advertised to achieve an #education outcome. Some educators find it difficult to incorporate the technology in a meaningful way into their classrooms. Further, educators can often struggle to maintain currency on rapidly developing technology, particularly when it is outside of their primary area of expertise as is frequently the case in schools. Here, we present a structured approach to using drones to teach fundamental geospatial technology concepts within a STEM framework across primary/elementary, middle, secondary, and tertiary education. After successfully working with more than 6000 participants around the world, we encourage other scientists and those in industry using drones as part of their research or operations to similarly reach out to their local community to help build a diverse and strong STEM workforce of the future. We thank Advance Queensland Advancing Science and the Department of Industry, Innovation, and Science Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship grant schemes for funding some of the work contained in the manuscript

08.01.2022 Social enterprises are businesses created to do good. They come in many forms, from coffee shops to law firms, but each one exists to help solve a problem in our community. At She Maps, we are challenging the embedded Unconscious Bias that shapes students attitudes towards Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Recently we teamed up with the Queensland Social Enterprise Council to tell our story as a Social Enterprise, as part of their Positive Action with Every ...Transaction campaign. In the below video, Paul outlines why we're so passionate about shaping students' perceptions and challenging them to identify their own unconscious bias'. We would like to invite you to join us and #ChallengeBias. This could be as simple as reflecting on your own bias in certain situations. Or talking with friends, family, and colleagues to recognise the unconscious bias that exists in our own workplaces and communities. Join the conversation and #ChallengeBias and bring the unconscious to the conscious!

08.01.2022 Check out this awesome work from an avid Pippa and Dronie reader! Part of our Pippa and Dronie books are teacher resources. One of the lessons asks the students to imagine they have been out with Dr Vanessa, and to write an email to their teacher explaining what they did and learnt! A top effort for a young reader down below.... Studio Sarah Davies

07.01.2022 Would you like to try your hand at analysing drone data? I'm giving away a #drone dataset a day. What will you do with it? Download here: https://www.geonadir.com/... I flew this mission just outside Alice Springs to capture the difference between an area where the invasive weed - buffel grass - has been systematically removed from the landscape. It's pretty cool to see how some native flora has returned in its absence. The mission took me only a few minutes, in comparison to the many days other researchers were painstakingly conducting in-situ mapping. You can see two images below - the colourful one is a DSM, or digital surface model. It shows the relative height of the surface. Higher objects or terrain tends towards red colours while the lower heights are seen as yellows and greens. The image on the right is a true colour orthomosaic. This means that it's made up of many individual images with a high level of overlap that I've stitched together. This process removes distortions so that we can make measurements with the image. The very clear rectangular portion of the image is the cleared area. Native grasses don't grow to the same height as the buffel grass so it's very easy to see the difference in the DSM. #FAIRdata #GeoNadir #UAV #UAS #RPAS #SheMaps #remotesensing #weeds #geospatial #buffelgrass #alicesprings

03.01.2022 What do you think - is geography #STEM or not?

03.01.2022 Proving that #drone data is not just about pretty pictures! As part of our Dataset A Day project, I'm sharing some thermal data today! These data are from Pioneer Bay, Orpheus Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Download here: https://www.geonadir.com/ I've used a FLIR Vue Pro on a 3DR Solo drone. I'm interested in seeing the patterns of water circulation on the reef and how they relate (or don't relate!) to patterns of coral bleaching. ... We've been using satellite thermal data for years to monitor sea surface temperature. Those data are used to understand anomalies in temperature on a global scale. It's really cool to watch El Nino and La Nina develop using satellite thermal data for example. Or for watching the path of the East Australian Current. But as useful as the satellite data are for these broadscale patterns, they can't provide the information required at individual colony or even reef scales. We can (and do) deploy thermometers in the water, but of course we can't put them everywhere. Drones are the obvious bridge between in-water and satellite measurements. Let me know what you can see in these data? #geography #geospatial #STEM #UAS #UAV #RPAS #FLIR #thermal #data #mapping

02.01.2022 Just like many people during Covidian times, data don't like to be isolated either! I'm sharing a #drone dataset a day to encourage #FAIRdata & #opendata. This one's from Curtis Island, Qld with my DJI Mavic Pro Download here https://www.geonadir.com/... I captured this dataset while visiting Boyne Island Environmental Education Centre - now that's a place to go for your school camp! You can see from the screenshot below that I use a high degree of overlap between each photo. This is so that software is able to identify matching points and stitch them all together in what we call an orthomosaic (check out the dataset I shared yesterday). I'm sharing the raw data today rather than the orthomosaic as I often get people who ask for a sample dataset so that they can practice processing before they buy a drone. I think this also helps to understand what goes into the maps that we make! Lots of data! So, happy mapping people! Let me know what you find!
