24.01.2022 Yesterday was a gorgeous day at Sheoak Hill for BirdLife Australia’s quarterly bird survey of the property. 67 species were counted across the property including huge numbers of Fairy Martins along the creek and a couple of White-winged Trillers - a new species for the property captured beautifully by David Jenkins (birdsaspoetry.com). BirdLife Australia volunteers (Werribee branch) have run surveys at Sheoak Hill since the beginning of the project 2 and a half years ago and recorded 122 species on the property in this time. #birdsonfarms
22.01.2022 Another classic set of African Boxthorn before and after photos. This series shows the manual removal via cutting and painting the stumps, piling it up and burning to prevent rabbits using them as harbour and concludes with lunch! This clump of Boxthorn was choking a mighty Yellow Gum and crowding a number of native shrubs - such as Fragrant Saltbush (Rhagodia parabolica) and Tree Violets (Melicytus dentatus). Both of these shrubs are perfect native replacements for the introduced Boxthorn. Note the southern end of Werribee Gorge SP in the background..

17.01.2022 Planting got underway this week with the first 980 seedlings going into the ground. BIG thanks to the Conservation & Land Management students from Access Skills Training for their help and enthusiasm over the last couple of days!!
15.01.2022 By my count more than 250 individuals, from a range of groups and backgrounds, gave up a bit of time to help out at Sheoak Hill in 2019. These individuals will be forever part of this project to reconnect the Brisbane Ranges National Park and Werribee Gorge State Park. A massive thank you to you all, especially my small but dedicated group of regular volunteers - thank you for your support, the laughs and keeping me sane! 2020 is going to be an exciting year with a further 12...,000 or so seedlings to be planted to complement the existing planting that is developing nicely. If you would like to join the us in 2020 please get in touch. Thanks again! See you next year. 13.01.2022 Glorious Glenmore morning.. albeit chilly! Thanks to Vanessa Hutchins for the beautiful photos!
12.01.2022 Having spent the last few weeks feeling pretty helpless observing the bushfire crisis, it was an easy decision to take a couple of days away from Sheoak Hill and play a small role in evacuating Southern Brush-tailed Rock-wallabies and Eastern Bettongs from Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in ACT to Mt Rothwell - Biodiversity Interpretation Centre To watch an Eastern Bettong hop on Victorian soil for the first time in 100 years was an incredible privilege, however bitter-sweet give...n the situation that brought them here. Dig deep to support those working to restore habitat and assist wildlife. - Chris Lunardi Manager Sheoak Hill Glenmore
12.01.2022 Glossy Black-Cockatoos love sheoaks even more than we do! Get behind this important campaign to support fire affected birds, set up by one of our long term volunteers, Katie. Share and spread the word!
11.01.2022 A whopping 71 species were recorded on last week’s bird survey conducted by volunteers from BirdLife Australia. Highlights included our favourite summer resident Rainbow Bee-eaters, big numbers of Purple-crowned Lorikeets on the Parwan Creek and 8 Speckled Warblers in one corner of the property, which included 3 young. Speckled Warblers are considered Vulnerable and a declining woodland bird that typically nest and feed on the ground. This makes them an easy target for foxe...s and cats. To find 3 young ones was very pleasing. Big thanks to David and Dorothy Jenkins (birdsaspoetry.com) for the stunning photos. #birdsonfarms
11.01.2022 I found these Pussy Tails (Ptilotus spathulatus) while spraying weeds on the side of Sheoak Hill last week. Watching them wag in the breeze makes me smile... not sure why! That’s a Rufous Whistler calling in the background.
10.01.2022 Planting wrapped up for the year recently with 12,876 trees and shrubs going in across the property, taking the total seedlings planted at Sheoak Hill to 48,844. It was a different sort of planting season with fluctuating COVID restrictions, frosty mornings and the manager on the sidelines in a moon boot! Thanks to the crew from Cassinia Environmental, Mt Rothwell - Biodiversity Interpretation Centre and the Sheoak Hill volunteers that made this planting season a success.
05.01.2022 In desperate need of a good news story? One of our own has been featured on BirdLife Australia's Volunteer Hub! We are proud to announce that long time supporter and volunteer at Sheoak Hill, Katie Ree, is the subject of the inaugural Supporter Spotlight on BirdLife Australia’s volunteer page! Katie created the Save the Glossy Black-Cockatoo Collection to raise much needed funds for BirdLife’s post-bushfire appeal. Read about Katie’s passion for birds, especially Glossies, an...d how she turned her grief over summer into a campaign to help out our threatened birds.
