25.01.2022 Caspians are our largest terns. Usually we only see single birds, unlike Bicheno's colony of crested terns who occur in their hundreds, possibly thousands. This one was flying over the little beach immediately below Sheoaks. Thanks to past guest Julie Bird for another wonderful photo. .

25.01.2022 On Saturday we took yet another load of household goods down to Midway Point, stopping for a leg stretch at one of the Rocky Hills roadside pull offs. Heres the view. Love this section of the Tasman Highway.

25.01.2022 Alan took this photo a year ago on Richardsons Beach. Weve been blessed to have so many wonderful beaches to walk on during the 17 years weve lived on the Freycinet Peninsula.

23.01.2022 And the same beach as yesterday, but at low tide. We know well miss it when its not just there below us. Another of Julie Birds photos. Thanks Julie. Were going to miss what weve come to regard as "our" beach.

23.01.2022 Amazing Easter sunset. As our new house wont have western views well miss our sunsets over Great Oyster Bay. Meanwhile well enjoy them.

22.01.2022 Coronavirus 19 or not, its vintage time on Tasmanias beautiful East Coast and the grapes are being picked. Lets all be positive and look forward to sharing some delicious wines when its all over.

21.01.2022 Social distancing Bicheno style.

20.01.2022 Fabulous sunsets from our deck are something we will miss when we move. Instead of looking west, our views will be over Orielton Lagoon to the north east. This was last nights sunset. Enjoy!

20.01.2022 Some of the grapevines at Ironhouse Point are starting to turn. Dont you just love the special colours of autumn?

19.01.2022 Yesterday required a quick dash to Midway Point to hang curtains and buy more bubble wrap. Heres the moon from above Mayfield Beach as we drove home. So beautiful.

19.01.2022 Were at the very end of the grape harvest on the East Coast with most grapes already picked and on their way to becoming wine. Once green leaves are now golden.

19.01.2022 Thanks to past Sheoaks guest and excellent photographer Julie Bird for this photo of the mouth of the Swan River at high tide. Love the colours of the sea and how they change from day to day.

18.01.2022 Another busy day sorting and packing for our move. Thanks once again to past Sheoaks guest Julie Bird for this lovely shot of Friendly Beaches at high tide. With a moving date of the end of the month, sadly we arent going to be able to do any farewell walks to some of our favourite places in the National Park. Will have to return after weve moved and when the Park is open again.

18.01.2022 Yesterdays post brought lots of heartwarming comments from past guests, colleagues and friends on the news of our impending retirement. Thanks everyone. A special part of living at Sheoaks Bed & Breakfast has been the little beach at the mouth of the Swan River. What a treat to go for walk often in the late afternoon or just to hear the waves breaking both day and night. We have been lucky.

18.01.2022 The boat ramp at Bicheno usually buzzes with activity as people buy lunch at the Oyster Shack or Coastal Seafoods, the ramp is busy with boats entering and leaving for a spot of fishing and local kids try their luck with a line from the rocks. Yesterday all was silence. We were the only car there. Not even a crested tern disturbed the quietness. Will Bicheno ever return to normal?

18.01.2022 Yesterday we had a note from past guest Andy Hale. It was a year since he stayed at Sheoaks Bed & Breakfast. He was wondering whether we were still here and remembering how much he had enjoyed visiting Tasmania. Just here. Were in the throes of sorting etc, prior to our move. Heres one of the great photos he took while visiting. Thanks Andy. We hope you will visit Tasmania again some time.

18.01.2022 Classic East Coast shot taken at Rocky Hills, across Great Oyster Bay from our place at Coles Bay. It was a hazy January day.

16.01.2022 As were trying to sort and pack were a bit busy to take new photos. Instead well share some of our favourites taken by Alan since we arrived in 2003. This one is of Sleepy Bay, a great spot for a picnic. Even at peak times youll usually have it to yourselves.

16.01.2022 It was just 5 years ago that Bertrand Cadart celebrated his 67th birthday over dinner at Sheoaks. Vale Bertrand. We will all miss your friendship, wonderful eccentricity and absolute passion for our area.

16.01.2022 The first roadside trees are displaying their autumn splendor. The gold ones always seem to turn first, with the reds coming along a bit later. No idea why, but it does draw out this colourful season somewhat. Love watching the changes.

15.01.2022 And the same beach as yesterday, but at low tide. We know we'll miss it when it's not just there below us. Another of Julie Bird's photos. Thanks Julie. We're going to miss what we've come to regard as "our" beach.

15.01.2022 Lone paddle boarder enjoying the gentle surf below. Alan took this shot yesterday afternoon from our deck. Well miss these views when we move. Lucky to have them for a few more weeks.

13.01.2022 Busy day yesterday. No time for photography. We managed to sort and pack 2 car loads ready to take down to Midway Point today. Many thanks to past Sheoaks guest Julie Bird for this great shot looking over lichen encrusted rocks then across the bay to The Hazards.

13.01.2022 Well miss our beautiful East Coast Tasmania when we move. Heres just one of the reasons why. Our daughter took this classic shot of Binalong Bay last December. Thanks Rhylla.

12.01.2022 As yesterday was once again spent sorting and packing this is an old photo of Alan's taken during November as the day drew to an end. What a beautiful place we've been privileged to live in for the last 17 years.

12.01.2022 Blue Edge Bakery Bicheno had the brilliant idea of offering seafood baskets for take away on Friday evening. You ordered and nominated a time in advance then called in to collect. No problems with appropriate distancing and the seafood was delicious. Next Friday theyre doing roast pork.

11.01.2022 Another trip to our soon to be home at Midway Point yesterday meant no time for taking new photos. Thanks go to past Sheoaks guest Betty Brokenshire for this photo of her daughter Naomi taken atop Mt Amos. What a great view!

10.01.2022 As yesterday was once again spent sorting and packing this is an old photo of Alans taken during November as the day drew to an end. What a beautiful place weve been privileged to live in for the last 17 years.

09.01.2022 Late afternoon on his way back from Midway Point yesterday, Alan stopped at the Little Swanport River to stretch his legs. As you can see, the river has a decent flow. Thats thanks to recent rain. This is always a good spot for a short break on our way home to Coles Bay. Its also very popular with locals for fishing.

08.01.2022 Quinces are one of the joys of April. This is a Stephanie Alexander recipe. At most it takes 10 minutes to prepare. Wash the quinces, rub off their fluff, halve and remove the cores. Generously butter the base of an ovenproof dish. Fill where you removed each core with a tablespoon of honey and a teaspoon of butter and wedge the quinces into the dish so that their contents dont spill. Add 1/4 cup of water and bake in a very low oven for up to 4 hours. They will soften and become this rich red colour. Served with pure cream or mascapone they are the very essence of autumn. Enjoy!

08.01.2022 Thanks to either Betty or Naomi Brokenshire for another great shot taken when they were both up on Mt Amos in February. You really can see for miles from up there. Just look at the shimmer on the sea too.

07.01.2022 Caspians are our largest terns. Usually we only see single birds, unlike Bichenos colony of crested terns who occur in their hundreds, possibly thousands. This one was flying over the little beach immediately below Sheoaks. Thanks to past guest Julie Bird for another wonderful photo. .

05.01.2022 Socially isolating pied cormorants on Moulting Lagoon. Photo taken before that reserve became out of bounds. Interestingly of all the times weve pulled into the little car park by the Coles Bay Rd and walked down to the water to see what birds were around, I can only recall one occasion in 17 years when anyone else has been there too.

05.01.2022 The Freycinet Peninsula is a great place to visit whatever the season. Alan took this photo of Honeymoon Bay last July on quite a wintry day. As long as youve got somewhere warm to return to, a winters walk is both peaceful and invigorating. CV 19 must eventually pass and well all be able to walk in the National Park once more - hopefully by this July.

04.01.2022 Here it is. Our last breakfast for guests - Ruth and Phil from Adelaide and Becki from Bristol, UK. Sadly CV 19 forced other intending guests (from OS and interstate) to cancel, thus ending our 17 years as B & B hosts. Many thanks to Ruth, Phil and Becki for being absolutely delightful last guests at Sheoaks Bed & Breakfast. By now you will be safely home Ruth and Phil and Becki should be well on her way. Adieu.

03.01.2022 Yesterday was a calm, sunny, tranquil day on the East Coast Of Tasmania. We paused at one of our favourite spots on the shore of Moulting Lagoon. Peaceful. Reflective.

02.01.2022 We're at the very end of the grape harvest on the East Coast with most grapes already picked and on their way to becoming wine. Once green leaves are now golden.

01.01.2022 In the early 1970s we purchased a special piece of ceramic art at the Shepparton Caltex Ceramic Award. Entitled "Sunday Morning December 1854", it represents the miners revolt at Eureka Stockade in Ballarat. It has taken pride of place in the dining room at Sheoaks Bed & Breakfast and evoked a deal of conversation with guests. Not so long ago, we discovered the creator was Sam Crump, father of Greg Crump, our colleague at Sandor House B&B at Orford. A small world indeed.

01.01.2022 Back in 2012, a few shutterbugs gathered to share our interest in photography, gently guided by Robyn under the banner of Freycinet Clix. This shot across the bay was in November on a still tranquil evening.

01.01.2022 Rhylla was right. Wednesday nights moon was even more amazing than Tuesday nights. Because our move approaches, we were down to Midway Point again yesterday, driving back after dark. Had to keep stopping to admire the brilliant moonlight shimmering on the sea. Alan took this photo from Raspins Beach at Orford. Thats Maria Island on the right. The small dot of light in the centre is Point Home Lighthouse.

01.01.2022 Every cloud has a silver lining. Heres ours at about 4.00 pm yesterday. Hopefully a good omen for better times to come for everyone..
