A recent study published in the Medical Journal of Australia suggests that anyone living in country Australia should consider vaccination for Q fever. Whilst those who have direct contact with animals such as abattoir workers, sheep/cattle/goat farmers etc are already recommended to receive vaccination, the study showed that those living in rural areas for more than 3 months had an increased chance (2.5 times the risk of those who hav...e never lived rurally) of contracting Q fever even if they had little contact with animals. For many Q fever illness produces a flu-like illness. For some it has serious health effects which can be long lasting. Prevention is possible by having Q fever testing and Q fever vaccination.
