20.01.2022 MEGAOESOPHAGUS IN DOGS Notification from the AVA PetFAST identification of megaoesophagus cases in dogs... A cluster of cases of megaoesophagus in dogs has recently been identified by the PetFAST system. PetFAST is a joint initiative of the AVA and the Pet Food Industry Association of Australia (PFIAA) to identify health problems potentially associated with pet food. Whilst this is being investigated as a potential pet food-associated adverse effect, no definitive causal link has been identified and this is a precautionary alert. We advise any owners whose dogs have recently started vomiting or regurgitating or are concerned about their pet’s health to contact us as soon as possible. At this stage, the investigation is ongoing however, there has been a voluntary recall by Veganpet of one batch of their dry dog food, batch no. 02026021. 05.01.2022 Dr Fiona Cameron fixed this poor dog who had an abscess under his jaw and had been drooling for ages. His tooth looked normal but the gum was inflamed. Thinking the worse (cancer) but hoping to find a tooth root infection that had eaten all the way through the bone to the skin the dog had dental X-rays recently. The arrows show the infection at the root tips. Once the tooth was removed and sutured up the dog has totally recovered. Without the x rays to pin point the affected tooth this would never have resolved.
