06.01.2022 Sherco’s Hamish Macdonald makes it two in a row as FIM EnduroGP Junior World Champion! SHERCO Factory rider Hamish Macdonald has claimed his second FIM EnduroGP... Junior World Championship aboard his 2021 Sherco 300 SER-F Factory four-stroke. After a hard battle against Frenchman and teammate Théo Espinasse, Macdonald finished both race days of the GP Portugal the last Enduro GP of the shortened 2020 season on the top podium, which was a fitting finale of the 21-year-old New Zealander’s career as a junior. It also rounds out Macdonald’s consecutive run of victories in the junior category, which includes the German Enduro Championship aboard a Sherco 300 SER-F Factory four-stroke; the New Zealand Enduro Championship on a Sherco 300 SE-R two-stroke and Sherco 300 SER-F Factory four-stroke; and the 125cc Youth Cup on a Sherco 125 SE-R at the Czech World Enduro GP last year. Next year Macdonald will be racing in Europe as a senior Sherco Factory rider, which will mark his fifth consecutive year with the popular French enduro brand. Sherco Factory Racing also enjoyed strong results over the weekend which, in addition to Macdonald’s back-to-back world championships, included Théo Espinasse’s second placing and Magain Antoine third in Enduro 1 (up to 250cc, two-stroke and four-stroke). I’m so happy to close the season and my last race as a Junior on the top step, Macdonald said. Two-time world champion! I’m so stoked to take out the Junior World Championship in Portugal. Thank you [Sherco Factory Racing manager] Fabrizio Azzalin and all the guys behind the scenes you know who you are! Sherco has a strategy to help develop young riders, as Azzalin explains. In the past, we might have looked at current, top talents and attracted those to the team but, in the past few years, we mainly focussed on helping to cultivate young, raw talent. Take Hamish for instance. In 2018 he joined our team as a customer rider, meaning he paid us to prepare the bike for him. In 2019 he became a factory-supported rider with Sherco giving him 50 per cent support. And this year he is a full-fledged Sherco factory rider. It’s a very nice story of how to make it in this sport. He started out paying for his ride and now he’s probably our best rider, Azzalin says. Having raced in Australia for the Motul Pirelli Sherco team and a podium result at Wildwood Hard Enduro, Macdonald is scheduled to return to test bike setups with the Australian Sherco race team as well as Chad’s Off-Road in the New Year. Sherco Australia has been supporting Macdonald since 2014 and continues to do so. To describe four victories in a row for a 21-year-old racer as impressive would be an understatement, and yet ‘Hammymac’ has done just that, and Sherco has supported him right from the beginning, Sherco Australia director Michael Poynton says. Not only is he now a two-time world enduro champion, Hamish is also New Zealand’s first rider to win an Enduro World Championship. He’s certainly got plenty to tell the grandkids. Congratulations, Hamish.
