05.05.2022 SIDS Breakthrough Helps Identify Risk Factor Babies can now be identified as being at a greater risk of developing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) following... a world-first research breakthrough. Lower activity levels of an enzyme called Butyrylcholinesterase were lower in babies that died of SIDS, a team at Sydney's Children's Hospital in Westmead found. This reduced babies' ability to wake up or react to their environment. The study analysed more than 700 samples of babies who had passed away due to SIDS and compared it to other infant deaths and 10 babies who survived the syndrome.
