14.01.2022 We hope many have received the most recent issue #6 2019-20 of Shield&Heart magazine. If you havent, then it may be your address is not held by us or is incorrect. Contact us via email at [email protected] if you want a copy. One of the many great stories in this issue is titled "Our Best Rugby Team?" by associate editor Mark Wallace (CPS 1976). We expected the article to generate some controversy or debate but the first reaction was this entertaining riposte... from James McCracken (CPS 1976): ERRATUM Shield & Heart Page 28 Title should read Our Best First XV Rugby Team? not Our Best Rugby Team? It would be obvious, even to the most rudimentary of sports historians, that the accolade of Our Best Rugby Team would rest with the Undefeated U/13Bs from 1972. (14 wins from 14 games, 213 points for, 43 points against). Often great teams are judged by the quality of their opponents. Unfortunately the U13Bs were victims of their own success often making the most accomplished opposition seem second-rate. This success also threw a shadow over the Undefeated Under 15Bs from 1974. By 1974 the backbone of the 1972 team had been joined by Fighting Phil Froebel and a number of equally talented players. This team struggled to find opponents willing to face them in the crucible of fire. But for that fact, their statistics of 8 wins from 8 games, 126 points for, and 13 against, may have exceeded even those of the 1972 team. Of course no history of Rugby is complete without also mentioning The Mighty Thirds from 1976. The playing style of this team was well ahead of its time and their contribution will only be properly judged by the long arc of history, (even 50 years after they played it is still too soon). It is no secret that the running rugby of the Ella brothers in the eighties owed much to the style of game that would have been played by the Mighty Thirds backs if they ever got the ball. And the introduction of mixed martial arts and volleyball skills by the forward pack was revolutionary. Similarly they were lifting players in line-outs well before it was made legal. Unfortunately Simpsons Paradox makes it hard to properly appreciate this teams full contribution to the evolution of the game. James McCracken

13.01.2022 With today, 30th June, being the End-of-Financial-Year, just a reminder that the Chevalier College Charitable Support Fund could use any donations to help with its work. The fund has been active in the past months helping the families of our students and our past student community, especially those who have been adversely affected by the bushfires and struggling with fees and expenses. Now we are confronting challenges with the economic crisis arising out of the coronavirus ...pandemic and the fund needs replenishing. We are also still raising funds for the bursaries in memory of Br Dave Merrick msc and Chris Topp. For those in a position to do so, if you are able to make a last minute donation - any over $2 are tax deductible - then go to this link and you can do so online and have it receipted to the 2019-20 financial year. Thanks in anticipation.... http://shieldandheart.org.au/support-chev/
