19.01.2022 http://MAGIC SLEEP HOURS// More on sleep from our Nutritionist @emma_shiftnaturalmedicine "Youve probably heard people say that the sleep you get before midnight is more valuable and restorative than the sleep you get after midnight, but why? Whats going on here?... The sleep you get in the first 3-4 hours of the night is where we see the most "deep sleep" (NonREM sleep 3). This type of sleep is responsible for - Physical repair & restoration - Learning - Secreting growth hormone And should make up about 15-20% of our total time asleep. The problem is, when we fall asleep after midnight, we are much less likely to reach these states of deep sleep. Even if you still get your 8hrs of sleep, for example if you sleep from 12am till 8am, you will be significantly less refreshed due to a reduction in deep sleep. A lack of deep sleep results in you waking feeling unrefreshed and, when done consistently over time, leading to stress and breakdown of the body. In light of this, I ask all of my patients to be in bed by 10pm at least 5 nights a week. 17.01.2022 http://IRON DEFICIENCY AFTER BIRTH// "For all the mamas to be out there who want to stay mentally well post partum, a literature review published last year showed that 8 out of 10 studies showed a higher risk for post natal depression (PND) in women who were anaemic after birth. Low ferritin in the post partum period was also associated with increased rates of PND. This is so important in our care of you after your baby is born. Now, does this mean low iron CA...USES PND? Not necessarily, but its a simple risk factor that we can remedy relatively quickly and doing so has other positive effects on physical and mental health. So how do we address this? Ask for copies of bloods taken in the hospital after birth or have pre-written pathology slips from your GP or Obstetrician so that you can get blood tests done as soon as possible after birth. Once we test, we then identify the right type and dose of supplement for you." Whats going on here?... The sleep you get in the first 3-4 hours of the night is where we see the most "deep sleep" (NonREM sleep 3). This type of sleep is responsible for - Physical repair & restoration - Learning - Secreting growth hormone And should make up about 15-20% of our total time asleep. The problem is, when we fall asleep after midnight, we are much less likely to reach these states of deep sleep. Even if you still get your 8hrs of sleep, for example if you sleep from 12am till 8am, you will be significantly less refreshed due to a reduction in deep sleep. A lack of deep sleep results in you waking feeling unrefreshed and, when done consistently over time, leading to stress and breakdown of the body. In light of this, I ask all of my patients to be in bed by 10pm at least 5 nights a week. Low ferritin in the post partum period was also associated with increased rates of PND. This is so important in our care of you after your baby is born. Now, does this mean low iron CA...USES PND? Not necessarily, but it's a simple risk factor that we can remedy relatively quickly and doing so has other positive effects on physical and mental health. So how do we address this? Ask for copies of bloods taken in the hospital after birth or have pre-written pathology slips from your GP or Obstetrician so that you can get blood tests done as soon as possible after birth. Once we test, we then identify the right type and dose of supplement for you." These unprecedented (yep, I used that word) times have seen an increase in stress, anxiety, depression and generally active minds leading to sleep disturbances.... Below are some of the strategies I talk about with my clients: 1. Limit caffeine intake - especially important for anxiety sufferers for whom I highly recommend you eliminate caffeine completely! 2. Minimise exposure to blue light (phones, iPads, computers) at night. This light suppresses melatonin production (your main sleep hormone) so it literally tricks your brain in to thinking its daytime! I recommend avoiding these devices 2 hours before bed and dimming your environment so your brain knows it's night time. 3. Deep breathing techniques, meditation, listening to meditation-type music or soundscapes before bed is a great way to calm your nervous system. 4. Magnesium is a wonderful calming mineral - great for stress, sleep, muscular tension/recovery and hormonal health. There are also some wonderful calming herbs we use in natural medicine to aid sleep. 01.01.2022 http:// ISOLATION // @phoebe_shiftnaturalmedicine brings all the wisdom today "I saw this post and it made me think a lot about the forced distance everyone’s had to endure this year. It has been a truly challenging time and in clinic I’ve seen more anxiety, stress, depression and sleep disturbances than ever. ... However, in the interest of writing this post with a silver living in mind, I’ve also had lots of patients discover things about themselves, their lives, perhaps friendships or relationships, that they had not realised before now. A big one has been people realising how much they had on their plate pre-covid and how rushed, busy and stressed (different stress to lockdown stress obviously) they felt. For some people, being forced to slow down has made them realise how highly strung they’d become and running from Pilar to post every day, to very often please others. I’ve seen realisations surrounding toxic relationships, both romantic and friendship. Some people have been somewhat forced into dealing with buried emotions because slowing down has meant more time to think, reflect and work through feelings. The list goes on and I could probably write a whole blog article about this. So what has the distance from everyone made you realise? If anything? Have you thought about it?
