Kama has a strong rapport with our SHINE girls and is a great asset to our team, you are appreciated by everyone and we would like to thank you for all that you do. QUESTION TIME WITH KAMA What is your role at SHINE? My role at SHINE is the Year 10 Facilitator at Champion Bay Senior High School How long have you been apart of SHINE? I have been apart of SHINE since 2016 when I started as a relief facilitator and was called on to deliver the program when Mandy or Jodie were unable to. Then in 2019 I was given the amazing opportunity to become permanent team member as the Year 10 Facilitator. What is your favourite part about the job? My favourite part about my job is seeing the girls growing into beautiful independent woman. Also listening to each girls journey, what they have had to overcome in life, their dreams and future plans. I never get tired of seeing the SHINE girls walk up the stairs and seeing their smiles on their faces knowing they are walking into their safe space, it is just so rewarding. Best Moments in SHINE? The best moments in SHINE is to witness the sisterhood these girls share with one another. A bond that will never be broken, the acceptance of one another and the love that is shared. One affirmation/quote that you live by? My quote that I live by is: Let your Smile change the world, but don’t let the world change your Smile .

18.01.2022 We learnt so much and gained insight into how life’s journeys can take us to places we haven’t even imagined yet.

14.01.2022 It was great to have our students connect with the police and learn about cyber safety. It's so important you know what digital footprint you are leaving and who has access to your photos. A good tip was making sure your online profiles have strong privacy settings on. Thanks so much for the visit!

13.01.2022 Learning to relax and to take some time out to breathe is really important. We made mindfulness wheat bags today, they smell lovely and will sooth a days worries away.

13.01.2022 Sand isn’t just sand as our Champion Bay Senior High School Year 10 SHINE students found out at a site tour with our major partner Iluka Resources today. We discovered the complex process Iluka Resources manages at their Narngulu site. Operations Manager Courtney Ackland gave our SHINE students an insight into the global market and products that their minerals go into from toothpaste to aeroplanes, golfclubs to bathroom ceramics. It was fascinating. It was great to learn abo...ut their workforce diversity and opportunities with Iluka Resources and seeing SHINE alumna Taiya Foley who has successfully completed a traineeship with Iluka Resources this year. We explored the laboratory, the processing plant and braved the heights to see how mineral sands were processed into high quality product. It is great to have an award-winning employer right here in Geraldton and that a SHINE alumna is given a chance each year to gain a traineeship. Thanks to the Iluka Resources crew who showed us all the ins and outs and had a yummy lunch with us. We are so grateful to have such a supportive partner. #opportunities #diversity #learning #partnerships

12.01.2022 We are so excited to be at Mt Magnet District High School starting our SHIMMER program this term. The Mt Magnet SHIMMER girls are a delight and have been creating love jars, yarning sticks, message flowers and creating artwork about a sense of place. It is important to find a place where we feel safe and happy. For many of our Mt Magnet SHIMMER girls they feel at peace when they are out bush with family. Kerrie Elliott is our talented facilitator and loves working with the gi...rls, her biggest reward is the girls smiling faces and enthusiasm. We are so grateful to our wonderful partners Cecilia Kelly and Carole Whitby from @GeraldtonSportingAborginalCorporation, Ramelius Resources, Shire of MtMagnet and the Mt Magnet District High School.

10.01.2022 Being able to give back to your community is so important. We were so happy to return to the Taste and see cafe and to help others. The girls were great and they learnt new skills and were always smiling.

10.01.2022 The sunset was shining on Champion Bay Senior High School SHINE students who had achieved 90% school attendance for the Term. This is a huge achievement and SHINE Facilitators Jodie McAuliffe and Kama Fitzgerald and Deputy Principal Waneen Bennett are so proud of these girls. It has been a tough year but with the support and mentoring from the SHINE Program these girls have strived for improving their attendance as ‘everyday counts’. They had fun at the Old Man & The Sea at @...TheGerald rooftop. They had delicious food and healthy mocktails and enjoyed the place to themselves with great music and company. Celebrating achievements is really important and these girls deserve to have fun and recognise they have very bright futures ahead. Three of these girls had 100% attendance which is outstanding. I looked at the smiles on these girls faces and remembered the first day they walked into SHINE at the beginning of the year and I am so proud of how far they have come. Each of them has a unique journey and it is my honour to walk with them part of the way. Jodie McAuliffe SHINE Facilitator

07.01.2022 Flashback Friday with SHINE Alumni Meet Taiya Foley! Taiya was a SHINE girl in 2014, Taiya moved to Geraldton and was living at the boarding college through high school, away from her family she had some highs and lows but SHINE helped Taiya through her journey, SHINE was her Geraldton Family! ... Taiya now lives here with her partner and is enjoying her nearly completed traineeship at Iluka Questionnaire with Taiya! What year did you start SHINE? I was in SHINE in 2014 at John Willcock. What has SHINE done for you? Back in 2014 when in SHINE, it helped my confidence and it made me realise every body has a story. It motivated me to get my school attendance up and it allowed me to gain lifelong friendships. The different workshops we went to gave me valuable life skills and advice. I wasn’t in SHINE in year 10 - 12 but being on the same school grounds, SHINE still made a huge impact, walking through the doors you knew there’d be warm hug waiting on the other side. Since leaving school, SHINE and Mandy has helped me gain a traineeship with Iluka and has still kept me involved with a project that I started up, it involved contacting the Alumni. Best moment in SHINE? Realising how amazing Mandy is and the genuine care and love she has for all the girls and everyone’s stories. Making memories with all my SHINE sisters, going to the Fremantle prison underground tour was one of the best experiences ever. Something you wish you could have told your younger self? To keep going because life will get better. Don’t be so hard on yourself because it’s never too late to change your life around and don’t dye your long hair blonde because now it won’t grow Where are you now and what do you do? I live in Geraldton and I’m almost at the end of my traineeship at Iluka Resources, completing a certificate III in Business. Advise for present and emerging SHINE Students? Take in all the advice, wisdom, knowledge and support given by your mentors and the people around you. To love the skin you’re in, embrace who you are now. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, no problem is too small if it’s bothering you or impacting your happiness. Look forward to the future, if you’re ever in a rough spot; imagine where you’d like to be in 12 months. Work towards your goals and ask for support if you need it, if you don’t succeed, try again.

04.01.2022 Opportunities are out there for Indigenous women. 4 SHINE students from @ChampionBaySeniorHighSchool visited the Geraldton Police Station last week to learn about the Indigenous Police Cadetship program. They met two wonderful young cadets, one being SHINE Alumna Monique Darcy and young gentleman Callum Tullock. They talked about their journeys and what to expect on the pathway to a career in the police force. It was inspiring to hear Monique tell her story and how SHINE h...ad helped her along the way. We had the pleasure of applauding and cheering for Monique as she had just been accepted into the recruitment stage of the Cadetship program. Congratulations on achieving this milestone and being an inspiration to other young Indigenous women! It was a great tour and thanks to Sargent Gibson and Senior Constable Renai Gildersleeve who spoke so passionately about opportunities for Indigenous women in the police force and the importance of completing Year 12. #strongwomen #anythingspossible #SHINEachieving #wapolicecareers

03.01.2022 Our SHIMMER girls at Rangeway Primary School are blossoming under the care, nurture and inspiration of Kerrie Elliott our SHIMMER facilitator. The girls have learnt about feeling safe, friendships, healthy eating, mindfulness, bringing magic into their lives, sacred spaces, self-care, embracing change and making peace flags. The girls have gained great comfort from the bright and warm blankets made by the QEII knitters and the regular visits by Mellow the rabbit. They are get...ting ready for transitioning to high school and we love seeing the Year 10 SHINE students buddying up with the SHIMMER girls. #girlpower #Icandoanything #actsofkindness
