23.01.2022 "Brave is condescending. It is shame repackaged as respect. Unwrap the words, and you’ll feel their sting. Instead of brave, I’d rather be thought of as kind. Thoughtful. Fierce. I’d rather any other word because then it feels as though you are listening. Not just hearing about an illness and making a judgment."

23.01.2022 Protesting outside South Australian abortion clinics has been outlawed after new laws passed the Upper House in State Parliament late last night. SA is the second last Australian jurisdiction to introduce similar laws, with WA still debating the issue. "Abortion care is health care, and this legislation takes us one step towards finally treating it as such."

18.01.2022 'Toxic Positivity’ Is Real and It’s a Big Problem During the Pandemic "With toxic positivity, negative emotions are seen as inherently bad. Instead, positivity and happiness are compulsively pushed, and authentic human emotional experiences are denied, minimized, or invalidated. The pressure to appear ‘OK’ invalidates the range of emotions we all experience, says Carolyn Karoll, a psychotherapist. [Toxic positivity] is invalidating the real hardships people face, especi...ally during this time, she says. Putting one foot in front of the other is an accomplishment for many during this global pandemic. Read more here: www.healthline.com//m/toxic-positivity-during-the-pandemic? ( image by NOTAVANDAL )

18.01.2022 It's the dam! Dental dams are latex sheets that can work as a barrier to reduce the risk of STIs. They do so by covering the vulva or anus during oral sex. The dental dam is held over the genital area during oral sex from beginning to end so that there is no direct contact.... Dams can be purchased online or at certain pharmacies. You can also make one from a condom, as shown here: https://www.cdc.gov/condomeffectiveness/Dental-dam-use.html ( via @lezspreadtheword )

16.01.2022 "With each selfie, I felt more comfortable in my own body and discovered a freedom I’d never really felt before as a disabled woman. I want people to see me for a very practical reason: Society is never going to change its ableist views unless we normalize disabilities. And for that to happen, people actually need to see disabled people."

16.01.2022 "Larger male models have struggled for acceptance. But at the launch of the latest lingerie collection from Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty this month, there was a step forward in the normalisation of plus-size male body types."

14.01.2022 "So, what can you do? I think the best option is to shift your focus from being intelligible to others to taking care of yourself. You will not be understood everywhere you go; your pain will not matter to everyone you know. What you can do is fence off the people who make you feel that way deny them access to your deepest self, and keep their judgment away from yours. You don’t think the way they do about what matters and how the world is, so you certainly don’t need to think the way they do about whether you’re wrong or bringing the mood down."

13.01.2022 What a day! The South Australian Government has just introduced a Bill to abolish the so-called "gay panic" defence to murder. Our laws must condemn prejudice,... not condone it. That’s why more than 25,000 people have signed the joint South Australian Rainbow Advocacy Alliance Inc and Equality Australia petition this week asking for the removal of the defence, and for stronger laws to protect victims of hate crime. We welcome the introduction of this legislation and hope that the SA Parliament will consider amendments to protect all victims of hate crimes in sentencing decisions. Can you show your support and sign the petition? https://www.change.org/p/protect-lgbtiq-people-from-hate-cr

09.01.2022 Don’t be alarmed, a small amount of blood after anal sex can be normal. Dr Amy says: It can be normal to bleed after anal sex, particularly the first time you try it. This is because small cuts or tears can occur inside the rectum and around the anus. The bleeding should stop after 1-2 days. If it doesn’t or is heavier/getting heavier you should see a doctor.... Bleeding can often be caused by too much friction, rough penetration or cuts from finger nails. It’s important to use plenty of lubricant and go slowly. The person providing anal sex should keep their nails trimmed and shouldn’t attempt full penetration straight away. Using fingers and butt plugs can be a way to prepare for anal sex. Sometimes small tears can develop into a chronic condition called anal fissures that need medication and sometimes surgery. Fissures can be associated with pain and bleeding when you do a poo so you should see a doctor if this is happening. Other things that cause bleeding after anal sex include haemorrhoids, overuse of enemas as well as some STIs so you should be checked for all of these if the bleeding persists. Want more? Ask Dr Amy is here to answer the questions you’re a little too shy to ask aloud. Submit your question here: www.shinesa.org.au/askdramy

08.01.2022 What does it mean to have meaningful connection? A meaningful connection is a two-way street. Both parties are getting something from the relationship. The meaning is key. The ability to share vulnerability, common interests, values, and interests are examples of meaning. A meaningful connection is the person you call or meet with if you are feeling anxious or upset. This is also the person you call when you have fantastic news that you cannot wait to share. You are interes...ted in their wellbeing, whether it be good or bad. Meaningful connections can be made at any time in our lives, whether we are 9 or 99. We don’t need to give up our superficial connections, but the saying quality over quantity does hold true. You can have a million connections, but there is more emotional value in just one meaningful connection. via Deborah Heiser Ph.D on Psychology Today. Art by @laurenphillips

02.01.2022 Newsflash: virginity is a social construct! The idea of losing your virginity is a complete myth and can make it unnecessarily stressful when engaging with the act of having sex for the first time. Many people consider the act of sex as just penis in vagina or penis in the anus. However, sex can be any kind of intimate contact including things like oral sex, mutual masturbation, using sex toys, sexting, phone sex and more. Sex can be whatever you and your partner/s want it ...to be as long as everyone consents. You can read more about sex for this first time on our Ask Dr Amy blog: www.shinesa.org.au/sexforthefirsttime/ Art by @hannahcakekelley

01.01.2022 "When I look around my friendship group and within society, so many young people's experiences are just not represented in the curriculum", says Tamsin. "Sex is a natural part of life, so why is it not taught adequately in schools?" Tamsin said teenagers were generally having sex for pleasure, but many schools treated sex as a primarily reproductive activity.... "The pleasure aspect is quite a large reason for young people having sex," she said.
