25.01.2022 While everyone is hunkering down for a wild night in Tokyo, I sit here at Sydney Airport hoping that everyone is safe as the typhoon makes landfall there very soon. Our Shinetsu Full Trail tour begins tomorrow, and I'm thankful to have got on a flight with China Airlines through Taipei tonight (as all direct flights were cancelled). Fortunately, typhoons tend to leave clear weather in their wake so we should be in for a great hike next week.

22.01.2022 Day 3 of Japan Mystery Tour. We waved off Neil & Jill at Nagiso yesterday. Now there's just myself and two lovely ladies remaining. We find ourselves just a little to the south of Narai (Nakasendo) in the foothills of 2956m Mt Kiso-Komagatake. There are nice but tough trails here. All is fine except the weather. It's quite damp just now, but we managed a morning hike before the rain set in. Ursula was 'lucky' to see a big black bear scamper across her path! Gave her a fright. No pic, sadly.

19.01.2022 We've just released a new Shinetsu Trail tour for 2020 - the Half Trail Plus. This 9-day tour departing 31 May, marks the end of the alpine snow-melt and the start of gorgeous summer flowers in a backdrop of brilliant new green. With two days on both the Shinetsu Trail and the Nakasendo, it'll make for a great winter escape. http://www.shinetsutrail.com/half-trail-plus.html

18.01.2022 Approaching Utsunomata Pass, Shinetsu Trail section 5

18.01.2022 The first snow falls today on Mt Madarao, the point from which marks the start of the Shinetsu Trail.

17.01.2022 Apologies for the time between posts but nothing much happens on the trail over winter. Today, was the first day of trail maintenance on section 3. It basically involves whipper-snippering the grass and clearing fallen leaves and branches. Nice day for it.

16.01.2022 Here's some pics of the beautiful early summer flowers on the trail today.

15.01.2022 Thank you to everyone for joining me and assisting me on the Shinetsu Full Trail tour this year. Although we didn't get to walk the trail together because of Typhoon Hagibis, it was great travelling with you all for the parts you did. You were a great bunch of people. Please consider one of our 2020 tours. Come along to our information night on 12 Dec if you can. 14.01.2022 Riki's just left for Japan this morning, and I'll go in just a couple of week's time. It's our second Shinetsu Full Trail tour, this time with ten walkers joining, so I just made this great purchase for them. Before setting off each morning, our hosts make us a delicious bento-boxed lunch, but this was always typically done in throw-away plastic containers with those wooden chopsticks - all held together in another plastic bag (like Riki's brother, Dai-kun, pictured eating on...igiri at Lake Nozomi). As a group, we created a lot of garbage each day so I bought these fantastic bento-box sets (pictured), one for each walker. They come with a neat spot for holding the reusable chopsticks too! I'm looking forward to eating from these in the gorgeous Autumn forests of Shinetsu next month! (btw - you can get this and other nice made in Japan stuff from Rakuten - https://global.rakuten.com/en/ See more

09.01.2022 I'm happy to say that both of our 2019 Shinetsu Trail tours (Full Trek & Golden Alpine Trails) have sold out. Riki's headed for Tokyo today to run his sakura tours while I hold the fort in Sydney. In May, snow recedes from the Shinetsu Trail and trail maintenance begins by volunteer club members. This year I'll join them in June - it should be a great experience! Photo credit: Trails Magazine 2017 http://thetrailsmag.com/archives/11054

08.01.2022 Wow - what a wet and wild weekend in Sydney! I hope you're all safe and dry - if it's not fires, it's floods! ... I'm pleased to announce that the Shinetsu Full Trail tour for 2020 has sold out, but what does that leave for you? Well, how about joining Riki's Dewa Sanzan Pilgrimage Walk in September? It includes four day walks in the beautiful forests and spectacular ridge lines of the Bandai Asahi National Park. Plus you have the chance to be reborn into a fabulous new person - Yes! It's true! Here's a pic of Riki before re-birth sashaying down Haguro-san last year. For more info, see: http://www.rikistoursjapan.com.au/dewa-sanzan-pilgrimage-to

05.01.2022 Today, we worked high up on section 4 making new staircases under the Beech Trees. Was kinda tough.

03.01.2022 The past few days in Japan have been both tragic and inspiring. I feel for the familes and communities affected by the typhoon that hit northern Japan so hard at the weekend. There has been much loss of life, people have lost their homes, and thousands of people are now living in shelters in Nagano and elsewhere. Sadly too, we had to cancel our Shinetsu Trail tour as the trail lies in the area most affected by the disaster. However, I'm inspired by the way Japanese people fac...e adversity and come together with big hearts to help each other at times like this. I'm also inspired by my ten fellow travellers who arrived in Tokyo just a few days ago. They took the loss of their trekking holiday straight after our welcome dinner (pictured) with such good spirit - Australians are decent people too. Today, six of them returned home, but four have stuck with (to?) me for a mystery tour of Japan. We walked the Nakasendo to Tsumago today. We've just arrived at Daikichi, where Kazuko-san and her family welcomed us so warmly. It's nice knowing Riki was here yesterday too. Safe travelling everyone! See more
