25.01.2022 Osu The current virus crisis will change the way we connect and relate hopefully in a positive and meaningful way. It is my hope that the current anti-social media becomes truly social and that we can move away from the superficial connections to compassionate and centred ones. Shingen means Compassionate View so in these times please continue to train when and where you can, follow all the recommended safety protocols and be compassionate to yourself and others. Osu... 23.01.2022 Tipping Points Pressure can build quickly or slowly but regardless of which there is a level at which something needs to give to bring the system back to normal. Perhaps most challenging in our current circumstances is the slow build where we may feel fine or consider ourselves to be coping then suddenly some small trigger that we would normally ignore puts us over the tipping point. We all respond to stress and pressure in different ways so there is no magic strategy however... there are some common practices that will help. First, acknowledge and pay attention to the signals from your body and develop some responses like, exercise or talking to someone as these are present moment activities that reduce time for rumination and worry. Second, create new positive patterns and habits e.g. get up at a set time, even if you cant go to work imagine the day as a normal work day and create structure. Third, be curious about your responses, this means asking yourself how and what rather than why, e.g. how am I doing that and what specifically is that feeling. Then be even more curious about the times you didn't feel that way, how have you experienced calm in the past, or confidence, what was that like? Our bodies hold the memories of every state we have ever been in and with the right prompting can regenerate all the states we want. Keep well See more

23.01.2022 A Simple calming Technique We are all responding in different ways to the stress of the current situation. Here is a simple technique to apply if you start to feel a bit anxious or overwhelmed. Get up and go outside... Take 5 deep breaths (you can only breathe in the present) Say out loud 4 things you can see (like tree, car, house) Say out loud 3 things you can hear (Like Lawnmower, music) Say out loud 2 things you can feel ( wind on face, clothes, etc) Say inside 1 key comfort word (like, calm, relax, slow down) Repeat and now with more detail in all of the senses e,g, The different colour of the leaves the sound is of a car moving away the wind is a bit swirly Same comfort word Repeat again with even more detail Then notice as that calmness stays with you. Keep safe

22.01.2022 Congratulations to Jess, Sammy, Ben and Kimberley on passing their respective grading challenges on Saturday. It was great to see the effort you all put in and the support you gave to each other. Well done, Osu

22.01.2022 Osu General grading on Sunday 9 December 4pm at the Applecross Dojo followed by a BBQ.

21.01.2022 Action vs Reaction The current situation is very challenging for all of us and it is difficult to determine how to act or react. One simple thing to hold in mind is, if you react then external stimulus in controlling you, if you act then you are in control. The ability to resist the instinctive reaction and allow time to develop and perform an action involves being mindful of your body's language (how does that feel in your muscles), and that of your emotions (how am i feelin...g e.g. anxious, fearful etc) as these two systems work together (physiology/psychology). If you can take a moment to be curious about how and what you are feeling this activates your higher level thinking, dissociates you from the sensations and allows you space from which you can then determine a positive action. Think of this simple key: Reaction -controlled by external stuff - may lead to regret Action - internally control (self) - will lead to achievement Please take a moment to take control and move from Reaction to Action Keep safe and touch base with everyone you know as physical distancing and isolation does not mean social isolation Regards Geordie

15.01.2022 Dear all 20 years ago the Shingen Acadamy of Martial Arts opened its Dojo doors for the first time. since then literally thousands of students both young and old have enjoyed the benefits of training in the system. Over the past 20 years the Dojo has helped 17 people achieve their black belt grade with two progressing to 2nd dan and three to 3rd Dan. at one point the Dojo catered for just under 60 students and ran 8 classes per week, all from the Applecross Dojo (Scout Hall).... Though the dojo now no longer caters for children nor runs as many classes per week, the smal group of current students are still enthusiastic and I love teaching them everything I know. For those of you who are past students I thank you for being part of Shingen over the past 20 years and hope you have some fond memorise of training with friends and family. there is an old saying that once you have truly entered a Dojo in mind body and spirit, you can never really leave and that I am sure holds true for many of us. Please help celebrate in your own way or contact me if you would like to catch up with other past students at a social event (no need to break out the old Gi), sometime in October. Osu Shihan Geordie

15.01.2022 Osu Its been a busy year for many of you with great effort in training and at your respective gradings, well done!. our last class of the year will be Tuesday 17th December and we will start back again in the new year late January date to be advised.

08.01.2022 Osu I am sad to announce that Sempai Geoff Jagoe has decided to stop active training in the Dojo. Sempai Geoff has been train since 2001 when he joined with his son Tully and since then he has been joined by Sempai Barb, Griffin and Brynn with each making their own unique contribution to the Club. I am grateful for Geoff's constant support over the past nearly 20 years and know the decision would have not been easy to make. There is a saying that "Once you have truly entered a Dojo you never leave", even if you are no longer able to train. Sempai Geoff will always be considered a valuable member of the Dojo and I hope he will continue to feel part of our Dojo family in a more social support role. Thank you Sempai Geoff Osu Shihan Geordie

07.01.2022 Osu Just a quick post to remind students that if you are enjoying your training consider inviting a friend along to build the numbers and share what you enjoy. Osu Shihan
