18.01.2022 Lousy internet? Possible reason #2: You need a new phoneline cable! Following on from our posts about poor internet and Wi-Fi performance last month, another reason you may be experiencing a slow or interrupted internet connection could come down to the quality of cable supplying your connection (between the box on the side of your house and your modem). In older houses, the internet signal runs through an old-school, cream coloured telephone cable (pictured on the... left). These old cables were designed to carry slow analogue transmissions, which have worked perfectly fine for phone signals all these years. They are often split up and run to many points throughout the house, with deteriorating joins becoming a real problem. NBN internet/data transmissions are faster digital signals however, and therefore require a modern cable such as blue CAT6 (pictured on the right) to operate at higher speeds with less interference. Run such a fast signal through an old phone cable, and you cap its potential speed whilst increasing the risk of instability. We need to look at the transmissions coming into our homes more like computer networks now, rather than phonelines. Upgrading the cable to CAT6 gives the internet signal coming in from the street the best chance of performing at its peak. That way if you do experience any periods of instability, you know it is all on your Internet Service Providers side and ultimately their issue to deal with. You have done everything you can to ensure your infrastructure is up to date. Phoneline cable upgrades are priced from $150 (subject to site inspection), and you will only need one! We have been achieving fantastic results with this solution (especially in areas recently connecting to the NBN such as Croydon North, Belgrave & Tecoma) so contact us if you would like to learn more. We are always happy to chat! @ Belgrave, Victoria, Australia See more

18.01.2022 WARNING: Theres an explicit verse towards the end of the song, but the tune is too good not to share! Whilst tradies are also still out there keeping your homes habitable and businesses running, we are grateful for all the other essential workers doing what they do best

18.01.2022 Whos that sparky-monnn? ! --! ... Now that Dave is working in our business fulltime, we can finally reveal the man behind the brains! Dave has over 10 years of experience working as an electrician, but a lifetime of fascination with all things tech. He grew up playing with old-school computers, audio equipment, and theatrical lighting. Dave repaired electronics and mobile phones before landing his electrical apprenticeship, and still to this day dabbles in the world of computer networking and programming for "fun"... Originally trained in the domestic and commercial electrical sectors, Dave has more recently become involved in the security and home automation side of the industry too. This stuff is the perfect blend of electrical and tech and requires a little extra knowledge to be done well. So Dave obtained the extra licenses required and hasnt looked back since! Dave is passionate about educating clients and building lasting relationships. His approachable personality and desire to help others make him a wonderful asset to those around him. When Dave isnt working, youll find him renovating the family home or unwinding with friends playing computer games. But with a baby on the way, the gaming thing miiiight become a bit of a distant memory... ! See more

17.01.2022 Happy birthday to our favourite, "secret back of house person" (who occasionally gets on the tools) - Sarah! Heres a flashback to when she wasnt so pregnant that she couldnt assist on site, but too pregnant to get work pants to button up over the growing bump. Leggings became uniform approved that day ... (Its a very deceptive photo, youll have to look in the mirror to see whats going on...) See more

16.01.2022 B I G T H I N G S We have been unintentionally quiet on the social media front this past month. Sarah has been slacking off (maaaybe taking one too many naps) because shes growing a human being! Who knows, maybe we will have an apprentice on our hands in a couple of decades... . We are beyond thrilled to be expecting our first child, and we take our hats off other couples battling through fertility challenges. It can be a lonely, soul crushing experience. We are som...e of the lucky ones and we fully appreciate that . So when we said we had big projects underway for 2020, we werent kidding! And theres definitely more to come. But at least for now the first trimester fog is lifting so Sarah can start pulling her weight around here again... . We are pushing harder than ever to get Dave into Shiny Electrical Services full-time because it will soon become the lifeblood of our family. So if you know of anyone who may benefit from what we have to offer, please dont forget how powerful word-of-mouth is to a small business like us See more

16.01.2022 Another action shot of the lighting for @ralffischfinejewellery s new signage. Dave had this vision of using the LED downlights to throw interesting shadows... Which turned out to be incredibly effective, dont you think?! We were thrilled to receive these photos. We take great pride in our work so its wonderful to see equal enthusiasm from our clients. Contact us for help with your next interesting lighting project!

16.01.2022 Whos that sparky-mon? We interrupt the daily doom & gloom posts to bring you this big news: As of Monday, our main man Dave will be moving into our Shiny little business FULL TIME! (As if we didnt have enough "major life events" happening in the first half of 2020 ) We are thrilled, terrified and excited about the big move. It had gotten to a point where we couldnt take on the projects we wanted because Dave only had "after hours" availability. But if you were a fan... of our previous availability, dont worry, we will remain flexible to fit your needs So here we go people, lets ramp this thing up to the next level! How can you help us? If you know anyone who might benefit from what we have to offer, please do connect them with us. Let us know and we will send some your way Now, amongst all the chaos today we know we are in for a bumpy ride. However, the benefit of being a very small team is that we are able to manage our health & safety much more closely. We are taking extra precautions with sanitisation and distancing to ensure we keep our clients safe and ourselves in the job. If you are in mandatory or medically necessary self-isolation, we are more than happy to see you once this is finished How can we help you during the chaos? Improved internet speeds and reliability whilst youre working from home or trying to keep the kids entertained over the holidays has to be the biggest benefit! Dave really knows his tech, so get him in for a free assessment and quote. But if youre also just taking some time to renovate or improve your home or business, we are happy to chat about all your options regarding electrical, data and security So spread the word and know youre helping this growing family thrive

15.01.2022 2 0 2 0 The New Year is here and its going to be a big year for us at Shiny Electrical Services! We have lots of exciting projects underway, which we shall reveal in due time . May 2020 be a year of triumph for you all! What big plans do you have your sights set on?

14.01.2022 B I G T H I N G S Hey friends! Sorry we have been quiet on the social media front lately, its been a busy couple of months behind the scenes at Shiny Electrical. We have had EOFY deadlines, home renovating deadlines, "special" birthdays, pet surgeries, people surgeries, big jobs, small jobs and a broken down van! ... All that being said, we are achieving goals and having a ball! One of our goals for 2020 was to purchase a Toyota Hiace so we could retire the old people-mover we had been gifted and converted into a work van. This generous gift helped us get Shiny Electrical started, however the weight of sparky life was quickly taking its toll on the old engine. Unfortunately the old van didnt quite make it to 2020, so we popped over to @cranbournetoyota a few weeks back and picked up this new shiny new van. Every good car deserves a name. What should we call it? See more

13.01.2022 N O T T H I S Y E A R Pregnant wife put her foot down and demanded the evening of Valentines Day remain free for a date. So, sorry treasured Shiny Electrical clients, unlike last year there will be no electrician-ing tonight. Shes using this "Im growing a human for you" excuse for anything and everything ... Even if you dont subscribe to the holiday, we hope youre spending your evening with someone special (cats and doggos totally count)! Oh and sorry-not-sorry this post isnt a poem this year

13.01.2022 We have awesome clients, and sometimes they thank us in particularly cool ways. This comes from the lovely Yik and Jess, thanking us for work we recently completed around their home.... Dave also gave them a hand dealing with an issue they were having with Optus. All it took was a quick phone call from Dave and an Optus technician came rushing out to take care of a low-lying cable that had been obstructing their driveway for a while. It wasnt part of the job, but Dave is always happy to help solve a problem. He knew the right things to say to Optus to get the job taken care of quickly We have been using our thank you truffle salt to make extra tasty homemade chips in the air fryer. Its been particularly appreciated lately whilst we eagerly awaited the day we can return to one of our favourite local eateries for a bowl of their truffle fries Now we can Whos tried the @coldstreambrewery truffle fries? 12.01.2022 L O C K D O W N These are very strange times we find ourselves in. Stage 4 lockdown has been both a blessing and curse for us. Its a curse because the bulk of our work comes from clients in existing properties. So unless their work is deemed an emergency, the majority of our jobs have been put on hold. So thank you to our clients for being patient, we want to keep everyone safe at the end of the day ... Its a blessing because the tougher restrictions came into effect three days after Isaac was born. This means Dave gets to spend almost a whole 6 weeks at home bonding with our little man. And whilst Isaac naps, Dave is FINALLY installing some of the security, camera and automation systems around our home that he so passionately works with every day Stay safe everyone, we are nearly there! What are you all up to in stage 4? See more

12.01.2022 Saturday - Our week continues... Why do we work most Saturdays & Sundays? Because both of us are still working full-time for other people whilst we grow this little "Shiny" baby. We so very much appreciate our clients who are happy to work with our unusual hours, your support is what will allow us to take the leap and go full-time into our business in the not too distant future ... Its bloody hard work, but we are loving every minute of it! And coffee helps with the early starts

11.01.2022 Do you have unreliable internet performance at home? One of the reasons may be due to poor Wi-Fi. The routers supplied by internet service providers (ISPs) are built to bare minimum standards and generally provide poor Wi-Fi functionality. Our solution: Install a Ubiquiti Wi-Fi Access Point. The Ubiquitis sole purpose is to create a stronger and more stable Wi-Fi network throughout the home of business, completely separate to the inferior Wi-Fi ne...twork generated by your router. This function differs to the boosters and extenders youll find at common retail stores because those devices still rely on the signal coming from your ISP router and therefore rarely solve any problems. On average, Australians own 3.5 internet enabled devices. So, with just two people living in a house the ISP router Wi-Fi networks can quickly become overwhelmed. Ubiquitis however have been built to handle the full load of a busy modern home or business. They are impressively powerful. With most houses, you will only need one Ubiquiti for full coverage. If however two or more are needed, they seamlessly link together to create one larger network. This means your devices wont get confused hopping from one Wi-Fi network to another around the home. Fully installed from $400 and our clients are impressed with the results. One guy (tongue in cheek) said it will save his marriage. No more Stop steaming Netflix whilst Im trying to work arguments going on in that household! Contact us today if you would like explore answers to your internet problems. 08.01.2022 Switchboard Upgrades: Am I being ripped off? Have you asked an electrician to come into your home or business to install a new light/fan/powerpoint/etc and they have said they cant do the work because your switchboard (also known as a fusebox) needs upgrading? Suddenly your little project turns into something much bigger and you cant help but wonder if youre being taken for a ride.... Its completely understandable to feel that way! But why is the electrician suggesting such an overhaul? Safety requirements are being updated all the time, and many older houses/premises are completely without safety switches to protect occupants from electrocution. Today it is a requirement that all circuits within a switchboard are fully protected with safety switches, so if anything new is added to the building (even as small as one new light) the entire switchboard must be updated to meet the new safety regulations. Newer style houses may even need some smaller adjustments to be made, such as upgrading the last few unprotected circuits on the board. Until more recently, not all circuits required a safety switch. Are you being upsold unnecessarily? No. It is a legal requirement of the electrician to do this upgrade work. By not doing so they jeopardise their licenses and livelihood, as well as your safety. So when you buy a new existing property, have a look at the switchboard. If it doesnt appear to have a safety switch on every circuit, you may be up for the cost of some upgrades before you can make any other electrical improvements to the building. But why wait until the day you need that extra light/fan/powerpoint/etc? Electricity is deadly; safety switches may prevent fire, serious injury, and death. A friend of ours in the Fire Brigade has attended 3 house fires already this year caused by outdated switchboards, and thats just one firefighter. If you suspect you need an upgrade, contact us for an obligation-free inspection and quote.

01.01.2022 Careful, considered placement is key... ITS DECORATING WEEKEND! Here is a couple of tips to help make your decorations and security systems get along. Obviously a security camera needs to be able to see its surrounds, so be sure to check your decorations dont obstruct its view.... Dont forget your alarm sensors also need a clear line of sight, so avoid putting a giant tree right in front of your loungeroom sensor... You know, in the room with all your expensive stuff... If youre a keen bean and the decorating is already done, quickly check in on your placements. Getting a good camera and/or security system is an investment to protect your property.
