In Sydney’s Martin Place, a scene that was repeated in towns and cities around Australia; a huge crowd celebrated Japan’s surrender and the end of the War. 11.01.2022 This week we celebrate NAIDOC week. The Shire of Denmark acknowledges the land on which we are lucky enough to enjoy and the traditional custodians of the land, the Bibbulmun and Minang people. We would also like to pay our respect for Elders past, present and emerging. Reginald Walter Saunders was from the Gunditjmara people of southern Victoria. His father and uncle had served in the First World War, which motivated Reg to enlist in the Second Australian Imperial Force (AI...F) in 1940. This tells the story of Reg's service in North Africa, the Mediterranean and New Guinea during the Second World War. His experience was a blend of frontline fighting, survival in hostile territory and leading soldiers into battle. It also tells how Reg served again in the Korean War and made his mark as a campaigner for Indigenous equality in post-war Australia. . https://youtu.be/vcr1teNsdNc

01.01.2022 Tourism - A way forward. With the Amazing South Coast Tourism Inc. announcing that it would no longer operate the Denmark Visitor Centre, due to the unsustainable nature of the model and changing visitor behaviours, the Shire of Denmark has announced its intentions to work with industry and the community on a way forward. At the Shire’s Council Meeting on October 20, Council decided it would commit to a Tourism Strategy that would be developed externally, bringing in a specif...ic skill set in a transparent and open manner to engage with local people with knowledge of tourism within our community. The Tourism Strategy is expected to take 12 months to complete with the core objectives to engage as widely as possible with both industry and the general community. Shire President Ceinwen Gearon said, We need to ensure that the way forward is sustainable when using public funds and that we use evidence to support our investment in tourism. The Shire has continued discussions with The Board of Denmark Tourism Inc (DTI), expressing the desire to work collaboratively on re-opening the Visitor Centre. After lengthy discussions, both parties identified that opening the Visitor Centre in the short-term should not compromise the long-term viability or create a model that is not sustainable in the future. As a result, the Denmark Visitor Centre will remain closed in the short-term while the Tourism Strategy is developed. President Gearon noted: It is important to have unbiased information and strong community engagement. To this end we urge the industry and community to be part of the process. While DTI has declined the opportunity to open the Denmark Visitor Centre through a recent statement, the Shire accepts this position and has asked The Board to remain an active participant on behalf of the tourism industry. ‘’We appreciate the pressures that are on all parties who ultimately want the same objective, the best for our community, President Gearon said. https://www.denmark.wa.gov.au/n/tourism-a-way-forward/20709
