18.01.2022 Black Cockatoo’s why are they disappearing? One of the threats to the Black Cockatoo’s is competition for hollows from other species. Invasive species such as the Galah and the Western Long-billed Corella are extending their range in the Wheatbelt and are competing with and excluding Carnaby's Black-Cockatoos from traditional nest hollows. On a recent survey in Mobrup, tree hollows that are suitable for Black Cockatoo’s were taken by the Western Long-billed Corella. Cockatoo sightings can be submitted online at https://app.maptionnaire.com/en/7399/ and forms part of a project funded by the Australian Government. If you require help with the survey, please speak to your NRM/Landcare Officer, Jane Kowald, [email protected] or 0428712050.

16.01.2022 Carnaby Cockatoo Breeding Season is in Full Swing. September to January is the annual breeding season for Black Cockatoos in the Great Southern, and sees breeding pairs utilise sites with available tree hollows and surrounding food and water resources. What to nest hollows look like? Black-cockatoos will use hollows that have formed either in the main trunk of a tree or those in hollowed out branches. ... They can nest in open-topped ‘chimney’ type hollows as well as tall stumps. Both live and dead trees are used. Hollows in use, or used recently, by black-cockatoos often have chew marks visible around the entrance. This nibbling is to create woodchips that line the hollow, and can be seen around the outside edge of the hollow. If you see a nesting hollow that is being used by black-cockatoos, record as many details as you can and get in touch with your NRM/Landcare Officer, Jane Kowald, on 0428712050 or [email protected] record online at https://app.maptionnaire.com/en/7399/ Photo credit: Keith Lightbody
