24.01.2022 "SHARE IT, BLARE IT" WEDNESDAYS The following post is being shared on behalf of A Choired Taste THIRD CHORAL WORKSHOP WITH MARTIN MEADER ... Following on from the first and second highly addictive workshops in August Martin Meader returns to Merredin for the 3rd Choral workshop. Martin is a writer of children’s fiction, a feature film producer, composer, musician, and choral director. In 1997, Martin co-wrote and Co-Executive Produced the Movie Paradise Road, a $25.6 million Fox Searchlight feature, which starred Glenn Close and Cate Blanchett. The workshop will be held this Sunday, 4 October 2020 from 12.30pm - 4pm at the Merredin College Primary Music Rooms - entry from Throssel Avenue. 24.01.2022 RESTRICTED BURNING PERIOD NOW IN EFFECT A reminder that the Restricted Burning Period is now in effect as of 00.01hrs this morning, Wednesday, 16 September 2020. BURNING PERMITS ... Permits are available during the restricted burning period. In order for a permit to be issued, you must ensure the following; Provide sufficient running water and/or a fire fighting unit to the area that is to be burnt; Ensure there are adequate fire breaks surrounding the pile or area to be burnt; Provide enough people to attend the fire (usually a minimum of three) from lighting the fire until it is totally extinguished and cold; Notify your neighbours/adjoining landowners prior to lighting the fire; Notify the Shire of Merredin prior to lighting the fire, during business hours (Monday - Friday, 8.30am - 4.30pm); Notify the Department of Fire & Emergency Services prior to lighting the fire (same day); and Notify the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions (Parks & Wildlife) if your property is within 3km of their land, prior to lighting the fire. Burning is not permitted on Sundays or public holidays. FIRE CONTROL OFFICERS Please remember that Fire Control Officers are not obliged to issue permits and they may advise on alternatives to burning. Fire Control Officers are volunteers and their availability to issue permits may vary. 20.01.2022 PLAY IT FOOD SAFE CAMPAIGN Most people think they handle and prepare food safely, yet statistics show the majority of food poisoning occurs in the home. Food poisoning can be very serious, particularly for vulnerable sections of the community such as the elderly and children. However, preventing food poisoning is simple if foods are handled and stored correctly!... This vibrant marketing campaign was developed to educate people who prepare and handle food at home, particularly behaviours around eggs, chicken and storing of perishable foods. It emphasises that preparing meals at home is nutritious and enjoyable, and preventing food poisoning is simple when a few key behaviours are followed.

20.01.2022 TREE REMOVAL TAKING PLACE Please be advised that between the 1st and 2nd of December, the tree located near the water tower that has been identified as dangerous due to rotting, will be removed. This process will be conducted as quickly and safely as possible.... There may be a temporary disruption to the use of the path that runs from the highway to the train tracks. 19.01.2022 SWIMMING POOL NOTICE Due to Water Corp works, the Merredin District Olympic Swimming Pool will experience a temporary disruption to the water supply on Saturday, 14 November 2020. As such, the pool will be opening later in the day to account for this temporary disruption. ... The water is expected to return by 3pm, however there is a possibility it may return earlier. There will be a further notice released on Saturday once the pool is open to the public.

After many months of minimal opportunity to connect as a community at large, it was only fitting that we could come together to enjoy the results of this project at the biggest event of the year! Reconnect WA is a fantastic initiative of the RAC, who have partnered with the Shire of Merredin to deliver our pop-up piazza project to build a more connected WA.... 14.01.2022 MERREDIN PEAK TOUR A HUGE SUCCESS! It was wonderful to see a large group attend the Merredin Peak Cultural Tour and Seed Collecting Education event. We had a fantastic time, and we hope the attendees did too! Thank you to Mick Hayden, from Njaki Njaki Aboriginal Cultural Tours, and Steve Fry, from Santeluca Forestry, for their wonderful guidance and knowledge throughout the day.... This event was held as part of the Shire's Recovering Roadside Conservation Values Pilot Project. This project is supported by funding from the State Natural Resource Management Program WA.

09.01.2022 MERREDIN TWILIGHT INTERNATIONAL FOOD FESTIVAL More than 150 people flocked through the Cummins Theatre doors last Friday night to enjoy a rich culinary experience, tasting delicious foods from all around the world. In total there were 13 volunteer cooks from the community, featuring dishes from Italy, Scotland, South Africa, America, Australia, China, Japan, Switzerland, Malaysia, Philippines, France, and Sri Lanka.... The Shire would like to thank sponsors Collgar and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, as well as the cooking and serving volunteers on the night. Without our wonderful sponsors and volunteers, we would not have such a successful event every year! What was your favourite dish on the night?
