24.01.2022 Outdoor dining destination: The Mall doesn’t need to block off roads or take car parking spaces away it’s a Mall! Outdoor dining is going to be the new normal, so let’s make this the new fun safe pedestrian precinct for lunch or dinner. With a little bit of Council TLC, lights, improved security and set-up, we can take advantage of the great cafes already here and attract some new vendors in! Let’s have music from local musicians and stalls for our creative artists. This is our space, let’s enjoy it!
19.01.2022 Services not Cuts: Olympia residents need a Learning and Leisure Precinct at Olympic Village, to join up the Banyule Community Health Service, Adult Learning, Olympic Leisure Centre, a new shopfront Library and a hospitality & healthy eating training cafe, adjacent to the P-12 school. We have high rates of the diseases of poverty here, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, addiction, depression & anxiety. Council resources are desperately needed to improve access to physical and ...mental exercise. We have a digital divide with residents here not being able to afford internet access or having low computer literacy. The pool is currently seldom open and should be available all day and weekends and public holidays to make it easy for us to use it (once restrictions allow). Let's combine these facilities with improved basketball and netball facilities through further land acquisition nearby and underground car parking. This would create more local jobs, increase foot traffic for local shops and make the area safer and deliver the family friendly infrastructure we need. If rates are cut unilaterally or frozen, then there will not be the resources to make this happen. There are currently rate amnesty and reduction forms at Council for those in hardship and of course these will need to be regularly reviewed, increased and extended as Federal LNP reductions in support kick in. But we have a two speed economy with many still working or in businesses doing well like Aldi. Rates are supposed to be about property valuation not going for the maximum allowable increase as our Council has lazily done. What’s been missing is revenue not returning to our disadvantaged and overdeveloped Olympia. Let’s fix that. 08.01.2022 Ready to Represent You: Shelley Park, home of the North Heidelberg Sporting Club including the Bulldogs footy team. Despite being a team in the elite competition, this club doesn’t seem to have much support on Banyule Council. The clubrooms, built by club members themselves back in the 70s, need renovation and extension to include women’s changerooms and modern amenities. They also need better lights for night practice and safety. I won’t play favourites on Council but make s...ure we get what we need here in Olympia. Great to see our Council staff out preparing the cricket pitch today. Let’s keep our staff and the community safe by bringing jobs back on Council with an end to insecure contract work. We’ll improve auditing of works completed better that way too to make sure we get what we paid for. #shirley4olympia #banyule #olympiaward #lg2020 See more
06.01.2022 Community safety first: Our streets have seen an upsurge in hooning by motorbikes and cars on our local streets and on the Darebin Trail. Heidelberg Police have advised that if you see or hear them, call 000 as this is the fastest way to get a squad car to intercept the culprits. You will not be penalised. It’s about time we had road designs and surfaces that discouraged speeding and dangerous driving. Our road infrastructure hasn’t improved while we have many more residents ...using them. Our local streets should be safe for us to get around on foot, bike or by car. Women’s safety is being ignored by Council. We need better street lighting, more women’s refuges and more social housing for women specifically. Banyule is far behind what other Councils are doing, they don’t see the priority need. How many women are on Council? One. Our health and safety must be the first responsibility on Council. 06.01.2022 Don’t get fined! If you haven’t received your ballot paper in the post yet, call the VEC on 86191403. If you have your ballot, Vote 1 for @Shirley4Olympia by following my how to vote card (see previous post if you don’t have my flyer). Follow the VEC instructions and get it in the post by this Friday 23 October to bring a fresh approach to Olympia. These parking machines are spreading like a cancer around the Repat campus of the Austin in surrounding streets. They’re a lazy, ...unequal tax on our community when we need to go for health checks. We shouldn’t have these barriers to getting health care. With the lack of planning for car parking spaces in developments, our streets are becoming more crowded. Before we know it, we’ll have to pay for a car permit each year as well as rates just to park outside our homes. Let’s get tighter planning controls in place now so it’s the developers’ cost, not ours. #shirley4olympia #banyulecouncil #olympiaward #noparkingmeteres #lg2020 See more
