19.01.2022 Hello Everyone, There are some exciting changes happening in business at the moment the rebranding to Shirvale Equine Rehabilitation being one of them. I just wanted to give you some background behind the change As many of you know, last year I purchased a property, Phase One of my goal towards setting up an equine rehabilitation centre. I began mulling over potential property names, I really wanted something that meant something special to me and would encompass this ne...xt exciting phase in my life and business. Of course this then led me to think about all the people who have been my unconditional supporters throughout my life. From this Shirvale was born, after both my incredible grandmothers, Shirley and Val. Both these women have shown me what it is to be a hard worker, pursue what you are passionate about (with a stubborn streak woven in of course!), support and care for those around you, sacrifice, how to conduct yourself through hardships and to make sure you treasure and love the life you are living every little part of it. It is because of these two women the choices they made for their families, and how they raised their wonderful children (I am not biased at all ) -- that I have had an incredibly fortunate upbringing, filled with lots of wonderful opportunities and the ability to make the most of each and every one of them. This has allowed me to make a career out of something I love & am so passionate about. 18.01.2022 #DevelopingRonan is back Yesterday was one of those rides where it felt like we had taken 10 steps backwards & I was white water rafting rather than riding I could feel myself growing frustrated that Ronan was not understanding what I was asking and that I could not seem to maintain a stable, quiet seat myself (he was making my job difficult with his legs flinging everywhere!). Instead of continuing into the downward spiral I could feel heading our direction, I took a mom...ent to stop and really determine what it was that I was feeling and how I could break down the exercises to help him find his postural alignment. Oh and a massive part of that was sorting my posture out to help support him! We still have a long journey ahead of us, but I am happy with the little step we took towards more functional movement The images are just moments in time, and not on exactly the same angle but here are some of my brief observations: Warm Up Collapsing through the thoracic sling. Dropping right scapula, whilst about to hyper extend through right carpal joint coming into stance phase. Lack of control of his left hind, bringing it far too medially. Right hind trailing, with hip dropping. Flexing of the lumbar vertebra in an attempt to stabilise his spinal column. Towards end of ride Start of some thoracic sling engagement, no longer dropping right scapula. Better spinal alignment, no excessive flexion of lumbar and more correct placement of left hind.

07.01.2022 How we hold ourselves and move our bodies, influences how our horses do the same. As I play more and more with in hand and liberty work with Ronan, I have been reminded again how intune horses are to us. They read the most subtle of body/postural changes, some that I daresay we are not even aware that we do! What excites me most, is that once we become aware of this dialogue with our beautiful horses, it opens us to amazing possibilities of helping them find their most prou...d and functional postures - and in doing so, helps us do the same. Next time you are out with your horse, take note of how they respond to changes in your body posture and energy - both the good and the bad - and let me know in the comments what you observed

06.01.2022 What is your horses anxiety telling you? Working with Ronan today gave me a lot to think about. It was our first in hand work session since his fall 4 weeks ago (which later diagnostics led us to discover his was born with a slight step down of C5/6 causing mild spinal cord compression). He was straight away unsettled, curling behind the bit, collapsing through his thoracic sling and over-reacting to every single aid I gave. Now, once upon a time, I would have just become ...firmer with him and told him to get over it and pay attention to me. Instead, I took a few deep breaths, and just tuned into him, to be guided to what exactly was triggering his anxiety. Was it when I was in a certain position or posture myself? Was it when I was asking him not to collapse through the thoracic sling to one side? Was it when I was asking the right hind to step through correctly? Is he currently COMFORTABLE & CAPABLE enough in his body to be able to offer me the posture/exercise I was asking for? By asking these questions and taking the time to observe his responses, I was able to breakdown the posture I was asking for into smaller, more achievable steps, feeling for the point where his anxiety started to come into play and rewarding every single attempt he gave me. By opening this sort of dialogue with our horses we begin to develop their trust that what we are asking of them is possible, and we will respect when they say that is too hard, adapt the exercise to an achievable point and reward. If the horses continues to say this is too hard, respect that, and investigate WHY. This is where the magic lies in starting to develop correct, functional biomechanics in our horses.
