21.01.2022 Our beautiful Digga has left the shelter !! A huge thank you to Australian Working Dog Rescue who have a wonderful local foster carer for Digga to hang out with until he finds his forever home. Digga has a neurological problem, that he was most likely born with , that didn't really impact his life too much. He was still a happy & playful boy, he just had a shake which was more pronounced when he was stressed. Because of this Digga spent his time at the shelter hanging out in the admin building with the staff Good luck beautiful boy, you're definitely in safe hands with Australian Working Dog Rescue

21.01.2022 Did you know....? That under the Companion Animals ACT NSW there are legal processes that the shelter staff must follow in regards to stray dogs or cats that arrive at the shelter. 1.If the dog/cat is not microchipped, it stays as a stray for 7 days. 2. If the dog/cat is microchipped, it stays as a stray for 14 days 3.If an owner has not reclaimed their dog/cat once this period is complete, then the ownership of the animals changes to Shoalhaven Animal Shelter and they can le...gally be made available for adoption or transferred to a rescue group 4. Shoalhaven Animal Shelter does not set a time limit for adoptions, a dog/cat will stay available for adoption until they are adopted regardless of how long it takes. RECLAIM FEES The cost to reclaim your dog/cat from the shelter varies depending on whether they are microchipped and registered Registration is a legal requirement in NSW and the registration fees are set by the State Government. The registration fee is a one off payment. No dog/cat can leave the shelter without being microchipped and registered Microchip $21 Registration - Desexed Dog $60 Registration - Desexed Dog and owned by a pension card holder $26 Registration - Not desexed Dog $216 Registration - Cat $50 Council release fee: $44 Council daily fee: Dog - $38 Cat - $21 The NSW Government has also introduced an $80 annual permit for cats that are not desexed. If you are unsure if your dog/cat is microchipped and/or registered you can book an appointment at the shelter so staff can scan your pet and if they are microchipped they can confirm if they are registered or not. If your pet isn't microchipped, shelter staff can microchip them for you.

19.01.2022 It was fantastic to see so many owners take advantage of our $50 cat desexing during October and so we have decided to extend our offer. If you need assistance... with the cost to desex your animal and have a pension or health care card and live in the Shoalhaven please contact us to find out more Kittens can be desexed once they reach 12 weeks of age. At this age they are a good size and they are still a few weeks away from the age they can start going on heat or for males, wandering and spraying. Behaviours it’s best to stop before they start. The Shoalhaven Animal Shelter is helping us out by scanning microchips for us or if not chipped they can assist with this at the same time. Just take your cat or kitten out to the Shoalhaven Animal Shelter off BTU Road at South Nowra along with your health care card. They are open Mon-Sunday from 10am-4pm. Appointments required ph 44293410 to book. They will then forward your details to us and our desexing officer will give you a call to issue the voucher and book the procedure with one of our participating vets. A big thank you to Nowra Vet, North Nowra Vet, Jervis Bay Vet, Berry Vets and All Creatures Vet Shoalhaven Heads and Ulladulla Vet for their support of our desexing program. 07.01.2022 REPEAT POST - IMPORTANT INFORMATION Did you know....? Tick paralysis is one of the most common preventable causes of death in dogs and cats along the east coast of Australia. Right now our local vet clinics are reporting an increase in dogs and cats presenting to them for treatment of tick paralysis. ... Many people mistakenly believe ticks aren’t active in the cooler months and therefore only give their dogs and cats preventative treatments in the warmer months. Another misconception that people may have is that if their dog or cat never leaves their home they can’t get a tick. Ticks can and do attach themselves to humans and we can then bring the tick into our home. Never assume your pet can’t get a tick as even indoor only cats have been known to have a tick. Symptoms can vary but common signs can include: Dogs *A change in the sound of the bark or voice *Gagging/retching *Regurgitation or vomiting (sometimes with froth) *Breathing changes difficulty breathing often with a characteristic grunting sound *Wobbliness in the back legs which worsens to paralysis and an inability to stand (sometimes owners describe it as ‘my dog has gone in the back legs’) *Excessive salivation/drooling (sometimes frothing around the mouth area) *Coughing (sometimes it is a moist cough) *Not eating *Progressive paralysis to include the forelegs Cats *Agitation *Sound of meow may change *Unusual breathing pattern with a soft grunt at the end of expiration (breathing out) *Weakness, though this is typically less obvious to owners early on *Gagging or retching *Salivation *Not eating *More advanced stages include a more obvious difficulty in walking, staggering and swaying If your pet shows any of these symptoms please seek veterinary treatment immediately. You should also develop a habit of checking your dogs and cats for ticks on a daily basis. You need to thoroughly check their entire body including their mouth and between their toes. Ticks may be small but they can cause the death of even the largest dog so it’s up to us to do everything possible to keep them safe. Regular preventative treatments should be given all year to help save your beloved pet from losing their life. Speak to your vet about what treatments are available for your doggo or kitty cat See more

05.01.2022 KEEPING YOUR PETS COOL With tomorrows expected very hot weather, we thought we'd ask people to share their best ideas for keeping our pets cool - dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, livestock etc. We've included some great advice for those of you with chickens, courtesy of the Nowra Poultry Club Facebook page.... Here's what happens at the shelter when temperatures soar DOGS: All exercise yards have a clam pool for those dogs that like to take a dip All exercise yards have misting sprinklers for dogs to stand under to cool off or if they don't particularly like getting wet the sprinklers also help cool down the exercise yard Dogs receive frozen treats - dry food or sausages frozen in water or a kong filled with tinned food then frozen CATS: The cats are lucky because they're hanging out in an airconditioned building so weather doesn't affect them at all. RABBITS/GUINEA PIGS Are also housed in air conditioned comfort What do you do to keep your pets cool and happy in hot weather?

01.01.2022 Did you know....? The most common age that large breed dogs are surrendered to shelters and rescue groups is around 1 year to 1.5 years old. The reasons given for surrendering dogs include "we got him/her as a puppy but now they're" - 'too big', 'too bouncy', 'too rough', 'too strong to walk', 'the kids are scared of him/her'... Bringing a puppy into your home is a HUGE responsibility and unless you're willing to accept the full responsibility of having a puppy, which includes training and socialising, then a puppy is not the right choice for you. Unfortunately, many people don't do their research before getting a puppy to determine if that breed is suitable for their family in regards to the dogs size once fully grown and their energy levels. How a dog behaves once he/she is older is dependent upon what commitment their family had towards training and socialising them as a puppy - puppies don't train themselves! Not training a small/medium breed puppy correctly has a less severe reaction because the dog is small so their 'naughty' behaviour is often tolerated ie jumping up or play mouthing. A large dog who hasn't had basic obedience training, including how to walk nicely on a lead, is often not included in family activities due to being a 'problem dog' and may then be left alone in the backyard, with minimal interaction with the family. The more you make sure the puppy is the right fit for your family and make the effort to ensure your puppy is trained and socialised the happier your family and your puppy will be. PLEASE do your research before adding any dog to your family, whether it's a puppy or an adult dog.
