23.01.2022 Members of the SDFA have played a part in supporting the greater Shoalhaven community by donating to the Albatross Community Engagement Clothing Drive. The response was truly overwhelming, and just when the donations office looked like it couldn’t hold another t-shirt, Ms Maxine Starkey from the Shoalhaven Defence Families Association’s Kookaburra Retreat arrived with a car full of baby and toddlers clothes" The donation from Kookaburra Retreat contained so many beautiful b...aby clothes, the team decided to share them between two other local community organisations, Waminda’s Minga Gudjaga ‘Mother and Baby’ program which provides holistic midwifery care, and Cullunghutti Aboriginal Child and Family Centre Inc. 22.01.2022 A story about being apart in these unusual times. These past few weeks have really tested me. We’re living apart at the moment, 4000km apart to be more preci...se. It’s a really long commute this MWDU business. I knew it was his dream ADF job when he told me about it, and I said, ‘We’ll make it work’. After all we were used to him coming and going. This would just be longer right? As a military partner of more than twenty years, I’m used to being on my own and I’m used to things constantly changing. I’d like to think I’m resourceful and resilient. Sure, every so often I fall into a puddle of woe-is-me tears, but somehow, I always manage to pick myself up, keep calm (sort of) and carry on. Due to the current global pandemic, his travel for the foreseeable future has been cancelled. We rely on daily video calls as he helps the kids with their homework, and we chat about the weather, the news of the day and how much I hate cleaning bathrooms. That’s usually his job when he’s home. I really love hearing his voice and seeing his face. It’s what we have to do at the moment. We put the phone up on the table when we are having dinner sometimes and have 'dinner' with him. Weekends are hard, that’s when I miss him the most. As I was cleaning the much neglected bathrooms yesterday, muttering to myself how much I hate it, I found an old bottle of his aftershave. I took off the lid and breathed it in. It reminded me of when we first met, before we had the children. Remember those days? Something as simple as a scent made me feel a little better. I took the bottle and sprayed it on his pillow. For the first time in ages, I slept well. Thinking of our families that are apart due to deployment or other absences. Please reach out if you need support. #DefenceLife #DefenceFamilies #LivingApart #Community apart by Morgan Lane on Unsplash

06.01.2022 CAUTION! Spring has sprung and so have the Plover babies. If you are coming to Kookaburra Retreat, please be aware that the resident Plovers has successfully hatched 2 little bundles of joy. The parents are VERY protective and will not hesitate to attack anyone near them. The babies are very good at hiding in the grass so you may not even see them, just a screaming adult. Happy days :)
