26.04.2022 Dog ownership comes with some powerful health benefits. The physical and mental health benefits are far reaching, and the ‘warm and fuzzy’ feeling is now backed by science. Dogs can reduce stress, anxiety and depression, alleviate feelings of loneliness and also encourage exercise. The biggest benefit that dog owners have noted is the joy and unconditional love that they bring into your life. Here’s what the science tells us:... - Pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression - In stressful situations, people with pets have lower blood pressure - Playing with your pet can give you a hit of serotonin and dopamine which in turn provides a level of calm and relaxation - Heart attack patients with pets survive longer than those without - Pet owners have lower indicators of heart disease The benefits of dog ownership on your life and lifestyle can be significant, it’s no wonder 40% of Aussie homes own at least one dog. Here’s some more benefits: Stress relief In the age of ‘working from home’, we no longer leave our stress at the office door when we leave. Simply patting or cuddling a dog helps. Getting your steps up Taking your dog for their daily walk or run get in your daily steps and raise your heart rate. Studies show that dog owners are more likely to meet their exercise goals. Having a companion Since isolation has now become a part of the norm (thanks COVID), feelings of loneliness and depression are not uncommon. Having a companion can take the focus away from other problems. Bring joy later in life For older or retired owners, having a dog can bring pleasure, boost morale and provide a sense of belonging and fulfilment. Teach kids Dogs can help teach children responsibility and empathy. Children also talk to their pet without external fears of rejection which helps build confidence. Dogs bring much more than love and joy, by functioning as our personal trainer, silent therapist , blood pressure medication, snuggle buddies and true friends.

08.04.2022 Ever heard of the Greyhound Scream of Death (GSOD)? If you’re a greyhound owner, then you will know about the Greyhound Scream of Death or GSOD for short. It’s a phenomenon that is unique to greyhounds, where they can let out a spine tingling, ear piercing scream whilst holding up their paw as if they had just been the victim of an amputation. Now, if you’re an unsuspecting bystander, you would be forgiven to assume that the greyhound has had something of catastrophic proport...ion happen to them, that they are in complete and utter agony and you should take them to the nearest emergency vet. But the GSOD is more often than not caused by something completely inconsequential. The feel of wet grass on their paw, having a leaf stuck to their foot, or a fly landing on their leg. Once the ‘offender’ has been removed, your grey assumes life as normal as if nothing had ever happened. There is no explanation for this behaviour, it’s just an odd quirk that is unique to greyhounds. Some greyhounds react more favourably to a broken due claw than they do to something that has triggered their GSOD. We unfortunately cannot offer more insights into this, but if you are a new greyhound owner then prepare yourself for the GSOD because it’s not something that’s in the ‘instruction manual’, and despite our warning, we’re almost certain that it will stop your heart dead in its tracks. #greyhound #gapnsw #greyhoundsaspets #dog #dogs #greyhoundsofinsta #greyhoundsofinstagram #gsod #greyhoundscreamofdeath
