22.01.2022 Last week, we welcomed the St Kilda Football Club to Sholem Aleichem College. The Saints community team ran a series of fun activities for our students, including football skills sessions and some fun on some inflatables. Our Grades 5 and 6 students were also visited by two Saints AFLW stars: Georgia Patrikios and Caitlin Greiser. They told our students all about their journey to AFLW and shared some tips for how to work as a team. A sheynem dank to the St Kilda Football Club for coming to visit us.

19.01.2022 Grade 3 have been flipping their roles in the classroom this week. The students have been taking on the role of 'teacher' as they have aimed to educate their peers about a topic that they are passionate about. Topics ranged from Nelson Mandela, dogs are better than cats, roman numerals and why you should read more books.

19.01.2022 To celebrate another fun and creative week in Grade 4, students had Slime Time in the Art room. Students who were slime making experts taught others how to make fluffy, cloudy, crunchy and colourful slime. It was a messy, sticky, collaborative and entertaining super slime experience!

17.01.2022 Last Friday, the Grade 6s welcomed Bronia Koperszmidt as their latest ‘Gast Oyf Shabes’. Bronia, who is a former Sholem Aleichem College parent and current SACCEC student, taught the children how to make the traditional Sholem Aleichem College honey cake recipe in Yiddish. This recipe, which Bronia has been using since her children attending the school, is the recipe of Mira Zylberman (the former directress of the Sholem Aleichem Preschool and bobe of Lererin Reyzl Zylberman ...and Lererin Dvora Zylberman). The students were also taken on a photographic trip down memory lane to see how Bronia’s family connections to the College related back to the students themselves and their own journeys. We hope this will instill in them the understanding that our Sholem Aleichem College families remain a part of our community well-after leaving our college.

17.01.2022 This week and next week at Sholem Aleichem College, there is a big focus on Khanuke! In Prep, the Walker investigation tables have been transformed using a combination of Yiddish and English, expanding the students’ literacy and numeracy skills. Our Grades 5 and 6 students attended a live screening of the Folksbiene Chanukah Spectacular and our Preschool children enjoyed a Khanuke simkhe, with activities, pontshkes and latkes! There is still so much to look forward to with home-made pontshkes, lighting of the khanuke-lomp, a latke demonstration, dreydl competition and final assembly!

16.01.2022 Grades 5 and 6 started the week by participating in an online excursion with Port Phillip Eco Centre. Palaeontologist Ben Francischelli led the students through an engaging and interesting exploration of the range of different sharks and rays known to have lived, and currently live around Port Phillip Bay, which included the prehistoric megalodon. The children learned a lot about the role sharks and rays play in the ocean habitat. Thanks to Ben and the Port Phillip Eco Centre for a wonderful morning!

16.01.2022 This week the Pre-Kinder class baked honey cupcakes for their weekly group session, as we get ready for Rosh Hashone. 15.01.2022 On Tuesday, Grade 6 welcomed their final special guest into their Yiddish/Jewish Studies class: Irene Kronhill Pletka. Irene, who is a friend of the college, joined the students to tell them about her parents’ experience being saved by Chiune Sugihara during the Holocaust. She shared the story of how she and her parents came to Australia, and about her long-time familial and personal connection to our school. Irene spoke about the importance of giving back to the community an...d working to help the causes you are passionate about. The students learned about some of her philanthropic work, particularly for Jewish and Yiddish causes. The students loved hearing Irene speak about her time as a student at the Sholem Aleichem Sunday School and about the life-long friendships she has maintained since her time at the school, reinforcing their understanding that being part of the Sholem Aleichem College community is a lifelong journey. A sheynem dank to Irene for inspiring our students! See more

15.01.2022 At Sholem Aleichem College, music plays a very important role. Outside of 2020, our students have always performed in Shabes assemblies, special functions, soirees and musicals. Today, following the easing of restrictions, our entire Instrumental Program is back in full swing. We look forward to continue hearing the ever growing talent that our College cultivates.

03.01.2022 Last Friday, the Grade 6s welcomed vegan chef Michal Dawid Lachur all the way from Warsaw, Poland as their latest ‘Gast Oyf Shabes’. Michal taught the Grade 6s about vegetarian chef, Fania Lewando (1887-1941). Lewando ran a vegetarian restaurant in pre-WWII Vilna. The restaurant attracted figures such as Marc Chagall and Itzik Manger. She also had a cookery school, where she taught about vegetarian nutrition. Fania Lewando published the Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook (Vegetarish-D...ietisher Kokhbukh) in 1938 in Yiddish. Many years later, it was translated into English and is available online. Michal led our students in a cooking workshop, where they learned to make a rice kugl and a prune tsimes. The students had a great time cooking with Michal and enjoyed learning to make Lewando’s take on these traditional dishes. A sheynem dank to Michal for joining us in the early hours of the morning to work with our students.
