24.01.2022 At 4 months old babies go through some massive developmental changes. Sometimes this can disrupt their feeding and sleeping patterns. Read on to find out more, and if you're finding things challenging, please DM or call for an appointment. #breastfeeding #goldcoastibclc #goldcoastbreastfeeding #babydevelopment

23.01.2022 Are you getting pressure to night-wean your baby or toddler? Would you like more information about night-waking and how to manage it? This article is a good place to start.

22.01.2022 Feeding to sleep is the biological norm for our species. This does not mean it is the *only* way your baby will find sleep. Feeding to sleep is simply an awes...ome tool to have in your parenting repertoire and one that will NEVER be a bad habit. If you are finding feeding to sleep isn’t working for your babe right now, that’s no problem! Don’t discount that it may come back into play further down the track. Needing to soothe your baby in other ways is perfectly normal. My little one doesn’t always feed to sleep. Sometimes she does. Sometimes she doesn’t. The carrier and dancing and sleepy music and the soundtrack of our life (read: rambunctious, playing children) also soothes her off. I cannot make her feed when she doesn’t want/need to feed... it’s frustrating to hear people make out that a baby will take a boob simply because it’s *shoved* in their face ... none of my babies has EVER taken a boob they didn’t want/need. They have all been very clear at showing me when boob wasn’t what they needed and it wouldn’t have mattered what I had done, I could not have forced it upon them (not that I’d have wanted to). Let’s get this straight- I can not make her sleep. I can not make her breastfeed. I can not make her breastfeed to sleep. IF she feeds to sleep, that is #normal as a human infant ... not a #badhabit as #sleeptrainingculture makes it out to be. Accepting feeding to sleep for what it is- NORMAL is a key understanding we need to come to in order to move beyond sleep training culture. Let’s spread the word ~Carly Grubb, 2019

20.01.2022 Breastfeeding support from a skilled professional can make all the difference when your feeding journey is not going as well as you hoped. But how does this work in this time of social distancing? How can a phone or video consultation be helpful? Well for me it’s very easy, as I’m a hands off practitioner with years of experience in observing mums and babies and verbally guiding mums through breastfeeding challenges by talking you through what to do, step-by-step, at your p...ace. By watching how you hold your baby, how you both fit together and interact, and what signals your baby is giving, I can help you make those small changes and adjustments to positioning and latching so that feeding is comfortable. I can also help you with reading your baby’s cues, sleep signs, settling, and more. By listening to your breastfeeding story, observing and asking questions, I can also help you with problems like sore nipples, mastitis, reflux, colic and unsettled babies, low milk supply, introducing solids, breast refusal, relactation, returning to work, and (whatever age your baby is) weaning. You should be the one in charge of this process, and I will guide you. We can do all this by phone or online. If you’re still not sure and would like a short chat to check me out, just DM, text or call on 0468 345 174. . . . #goldcoastbreastfeeding #goldcoastibclc #breastfeeding #goldcoastlactationconsultant #supportmums #telehealth See more

16.01.2022 Happy #WorldBreastfeedingWeek2020! We all have the right to be supported by society to breastfeed optimally. Support can come from families, communities, health systems and workplaces. Breastfeeding counselling is one form of support, and when it is available and accessible to families, the duration and exclusivity of breastfeeding is increased. Much of the work I do as an IBCLC is actually counselling - meeting mums where they are at in their breastfeeding journey and helpin...g them figure out where they’d like to go next. I am forever grateful to @ozbreastfeeding for my initial interest (and training) in breastfeeding counselling and where that skill has led me to today. #WBW2020 #WABA #breastfeeding #WorldBreastfeedingWeek #ozbreastfeeding See more

14.01.2022 Sharing this because I know there are Portuguese-speaking mums who follow this page. Perhaps you’d like to access this service,or perhaps you’d like to volunteer your time to help others?

14.01.2022 Shout out to the lovely lady customer at Robina Car & Dog Wash today who gifted me the remaining $5 credit of her car wash time this morning . You’ve no idea what this meant to me today. (My car had suffered a muck attack from being parked outside a building site this morning ). You restored my faith that there are nice people in the world. Only when I got home and jumped on social media did I realise that today is #WorldKindnessDay So, whoever you are, and whether you are ...just always a nice person or making a special effort for today, THANK YOU! I owe you a coffee. #bekind #WorldKindnessDay #ibclclife See more

13.01.2022 Babies are happiest when we fill up their bellies AND fill up their brains (though getting the balance right can be tricky). Here are some ideas for the brain part - never forgetting that YOU are your baby's favourite play thing! #breastfeeding #newborn

13.01.2022 A lovely mum messaged me this today and gave me permission to share. THIS is why I do my job - so women get to become the mums they always wanted to be. Hi Shona! No major milestone today but something made me think of you - here is a pic from today with DS (20 months) asleep in the carrier after boob - boobing and babywearing, something I never thought I'd manage haha! He still feeds regularly through the day and night, honestly not sure how I'd parent without boobs. Thank... you for all you do, I would be a totally different mum without having met you . . . #supportmums #breastfeeding #babywearing #goldcoast #goldcoastlactationconsultant #goldcoastibclc

13.01.2022 Parents often tell me that they are trying to get their baby into a routine or schedule. There's actually a big difference between these two, and it can be confusing if you're not sure what is best for your baby. This article from Tracy Cassels might help and give you some ideas for your baby. If you're looking for more guidance, give me a call on 0468 345 174. #breastfeeding #babysleep #supportmums

13.01.2022 This is really useful information about how to make sure your breast pump is the right size. #breastfeeding #supportmums #goldcoastbreastfeeding #goldcoastibclc

13.01.2022 Did you know that babies go through all sorts of developmental changes or leaps through the first year of life (and beyond!) Some of these cause (temporary) changes to waking patterns and behaviour, and babies might look for more breastfeeds and cuddles through this time. THIS might make us feel like we have a problem with our milk supply... The good news is that I can help you figure out what’s really going on, by looking at the whole picture and giving you practical solut...ions that really work! These leaps can be challenging but I can help you navigate them. Give me a call on 0468 345 274. #breastfeeding #goldcoastlactation #goldcoastbreastfeeding #babysleep #nosleeptraining See more

12.01.2022 Are you worried about your milk supply? How can you increase it? The simple answer is: FEED MORE. Feed. Then feed again. The more milk you remove, the more you're going to make. If this doesn't seem to work, then there might be something more complex going on, and an IBCLC like me can help. You can contact me here - www.shonacasselsibclc.com.au - or call/SMS 0468 345 174.

11.01.2022 There is no "one" way to latch your baby on - it's as individual as each mum and baby. Beware of anyone who tells you they have one way that will always work for everyone, as this is simply not true. However, some mums do find that videos like this one assist them to learn what might work for them. If you're still having difficulty, seek out an IBCLC like me to get some individual support. #breastfeeding #supportmums #goldcoastlactationconsultant #goldcoastibclc

10.01.2022 Remember...In order to grow healthy brains, babies don't need daily perfection from you, they just need 'good enough'. You’re doing great!

10.01.2022 Did you know that IBCLCs like me can help you when you’re ready to wean your baby or child from breastfeeding? This might mean fully weaning (completely stopping breastfeeding) or partial weaning (where you still breastfeed some of the time). There are lots of reasons why mums might need to wean, and I can help you look at all of your options and make the weaning plan that’s right for you. . . .... #breastfeeding #goldcoastmums #weaning #goldcoastlactationconsultant #goldcoastibclc See more

08.01.2022 This week a mum told me she’d been told her breasts were too small to make enough milk for her baby. Luckily she knew to see an IBCLC to get the facts. #evidencebased #breastfeeding #goldcoastbreastfeeding #ibclc

08.01.2022 The first milk your breasts make (called colostrum) is in small amounts, which exactly match what your baby needs to fill their tummy at this time. On Day 1 your baby will therefore have one wet nappy and the colostrum will help them to pass the meconium (which is black and sticky) from their digestive tract. Over the first few days after your baby is born your breasts start producing more milk and at the same time your baby will be able to take more - and you’ll see this whe...n they produce 2 wet nappies on Day 2, 3 wet nappies on Day 3, 4 nappies on Day 4, and so on. Your baby’s poos will also transition from greeny-black through to mustard-yellow during this time. 08.01.2022 Have you been told that your baby needs to learn to self settle (self soothe)? Are you looking for the facts about infant feeding, settling and sleeping? Please DM or call to find out how I can help. #babysleep #breastfeeding #responsiveparenting #goldcoastibclc

08.01.2022 Thanks @breastfeeding.dietitian for this graphic and the phrase Your breasts are sisters, not twins. It’s really common for one of our breasts to be bigger than the other. We are most likely to notice this in the first few weeks of breastfeeding, when many of us are over-producing milk. There are lots of reasons for the difference in size, including: .... One breast might make more milk than the other. . One breast might letdown quicker. . One breast might be easier for your baby to latch onto (different nipple/breast size or shape). . You might find one breast easier to feed from (we all tend to be either right or left/handed). . Your baby might feel more comfortable on one side. (I see this with babies who have had a birth injury or torticullis.) And of course, if your baby feels more comfortable on one breast they’ll feed better on that one, which increases its supply, and makes it even more popular! . So what can we do about this? We can sometimes make our breasts more even if we feed more often from the less popular side. Our breasts often become less lop-sided once our supply settles down anyway. If otherwise things are going well then there’s no need to do anything Hands up if you’re just embracing the uneven look? . . . #breastfeedingsupport #supportmums #goldcoastibclc #goldcoastbreastfeeding #goldcoastlactationconsultant See more

07.01.2022 Have you been told that your baby is feeding too much? Did you know that 8 feeds per day is the MINIMUM that most babies need? (The average number of feeds is around 11 in 24hrs.) Also, the feeds will likely not be evenly spaced. If you follow your baby’s cues in the early weeks you’ll find their pattern. 03.01.2022 Pain when breastfeeding is not normal. Yes, it might feel a bit strange at first. There might even be a few seconds of discomfort as your baby gets on. But if it's painful - in any way - get help! You shouldn't have to "put up with it". And you definitely shouldn't have to be pumping because your nipples are too sore to feed If breastfeeding is painful for you, find a qualified IBCLC to help you. You can contact me here - www.shonacasselsibclc.com.au or call 0468 345 174.
