23.01.2022 UPDATE: ANNUAL WAGE REVIEW DECISION Today the Fair Work Commission handed down the Annual Wage Review decision. A 1.75% increase for the Retail, Fast Food and Hair & Beauty Awards will be delayed until 1 February 2021.... A wage freeze until 1 February is a slap in the face to the brave workers who continued to serve the Australian community during the height of the COVID crisis. SDA members cannot pay the bills with praise and thanks. Retail workers who had to manage the work intensity and emotional abuse of panic buying are now thanked with a wage freeze and a Sunday penalty rate cut on 1 July. Women and young workers have been disproportionately been hurt by COVID. Now those women and young frontline workers are further disadvantaged by a wage freeze and a penalty rate cut. The SDA will be making an immediate application to the Fair Work Commission to delay the scheduled cut to Sunday penalty rates until retail workers get a wage increase. We will keep all SDA members up to date with more information directly.

23.01.2022 2020 has been an extremely challenging year for everyone and it is more important than ever to consider your mental health and the mental health of your loved ones. For our essential retail, fast food and warehousing employees, it has been especially difficult. The SDA encourages everyone to participate in 'R U OK? Day' this year.... Reach out to a family member, friend or co-worker and check up on them. Visit https://national.sda.com.au/r-u-ok-day-2020/ for resources you can access if you or someone you know is struggling.

21.01.2022 Our organiser Karen popped into Bunnings Kalgoorlie today as part of our regular regional visits. And, like every good organiser, dropped a tin of lollies for the staff. Too good!

18.01.2022 Last November the SDA called on all retailers conduct an audit of their payroll systems to ensure no worker is being underpaid. As your union, it is our priority to ensure you receive the correct pay and conditions you are legally entitled to. If you are impacted by this underpayment, you will receive direct communication from the Company in late September or early October.... The SDA is here to provide help and support and we will continue to keep you updated with further information.

18.01.2022 Happy 65th birthday to Flo! Flo is one of our great long-time Woolworths Union delegates and she's pictured here with her Union organiser Durand.

18.01.2022 Jeremy began his journey with the SDA as a Woolworths trolley boy 26 years ago and has remained a union member ever since. After trolleys, Jeremy spent more than a decade employed in petrol, where he worked his way up to management, he is now very happy in his current role at Big W. Jeremy says it was his Dad who first got him interested in joining the Union. ... He was a firm believer in unions helping each other, covering each other, and making sure everything goes smoothly and right it was very easy for me to continue the same thing. I have been very lucky that I haven’t had any problems that I’ve had to call the union in on but my organisers and delegates have been always been awesome at helping out with any little enquiry you have. Jeremy says being in the union has made his working life easier and it’s always good to know you’ve got the support there for when you need it.

17.01.2022 Karen and June are two of our loyal, hard-working Big W Delegates, with almost 40 years of union membership between them. Karen first joined the union 25 years ago to ensure she always had some backup if anything were to go wrong at work. As a Delegate Karen said it was great to be able to help her colleagues with their cases and she really enjoyed meeting other Delegates at the annual Delegates Day function. ... June has been an SDA member for all her 13 years at Big W. June said she has been able to take advantage of the Union’s textbook scholarship program which has helped her out immensely. Both June and Karen agreed that they would encourage anyone in retail to join the Union and take advantage of the available assistance and services. Thank you both for your massive contribution to the Union!

17.01.2022 Employers can give a pay rise earlier than February. If you are a supermarket worker, send your employer a clear a message: we deserve a pay rise now. Support the campaign at https://national.sda.com.au/essential-payrise/

14.01.2022 Andrea joined the SDA when she first started at Coles almost five years ago. Recently, during some extremely challenging circumstances, Andrea reached out to her Organiser, Karen, for assistance with her roster changes. It was either work or my kids, so going to Karen and being able to go to the Union helped make it possible for me to stay in the workplace.... Andrea said she would encourage anyone to join their union. There’s so many people that I’ve spoken to that don’t realise just how much the Union can do for them. Even though my circumstances might be different to theirs, they don’t know what might come up and the Union takes a lot of stress and pressure off you. You don’t feel like you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place when you have the Union with you.

14.01.2022 We always maintain and enforce our right to represent you in disciplinary or counselling meetings. When an SDA Union delegate or organiser performs this role we are entitled to advocate on your behalf. We aren't just along for the ride.... Calling on us for advice or representation the next time you have a meeting means you’re more likely to receive a just and fair outcome. Learn more at: https://national.sda.com.au/kyr-counsellings/

13.01.2022 PAY RISE FOR BUNNINGS WORKERS Bunnings has indicated to the SDA that they will not be bargaining in the short term for a new Agreement until the Federal Government completes its industrial relations review. However, we know how important a pay increase is for those of you who have been working hard through the pandemic to provide an essential service to the community. That’s why we have been campaigning across the industry for an immediate pay rise for retail workers.... In good news for Bunnings team members, they will now receive interim improvements to the current Agreement. These include improvements to penalty rates, and a performance based pay review that will take effect from 7 September 2020. Bunnings workers should notice the pay increase in their next pay. There is also a classification improvement for team members who: - Have completed Expert training; or - Work across any combination of the Special Orders, Trade or Service Desks, or operate a forklift, for 50% or more of their total rostered hours over 52 weeks. The SDA will continue to press Bunnings to negotiate a new Agreement that secures your pay and conditions over the next few years.

12.01.2022 We don't need 'simpler awards', we just need employers to follow them.

12.01.2022 From 1 October 2020, over 300,000 casual retail workers will receive an increase to their weeknight and Saturday penalty rates thanks to the SDA. These increases are the result of a hard-fought case by the SDA at the Fair Work Commission in 2018 to introduce and improve weeknight and Saturday penalty rates for casual retail workers. The increases started on 1 March 2020 this is the second of three increases, with the next increase due on 1 March 2021.... The increase will apply to members on the General Retail Industry Award and members under EBA's that mirror penalty rates set out in the Award.

08.01.2022 Big congrats to Lesley, who hit an impressive milestone today, having been with Coles for 35 years. Lesley is a proud SDA member and brilliant Delegate - keep up the great work Lesley!

08.01.2022 One of our wonderful delegates, Gerry, is retiring after 45 years of service at Coles. Gerry is looking forward to retirement and spending time with her granddaughter. Thank you for your many years of loyal union membership and best of luck for the next chapter in your life.

08.01.2022 As part of our regular delegate training, Coles delegates got to attend the Western Australian Parliament this week. Upper House members Hon Kate Doust MLC and Hon. Martin Pritchard MLC hosted us - both former officials of the SDA. Ensuring a positive working relationship with members of parliament is crucial in ensuring that laws passed in WA, often affecting us all directly, are passed with retail, fast food and warehousing workers in mind.... If you're interested in becoming a delegate, get in contact with your organiser.

07.01.2022 This. Shout out to all the essential workers - you are our pandemic heroes.

06.01.2022 Timika has been an SDA member for seven years. For me, it was all about feeling safe at work. I was a teenager when I started and we get abused a lot. I’ve been stalked three or four times since I’ve been here, so the Union is there to help me feel safe at work. ... I had a guy say that I abused him once, even though I was being really nice. He then went to multiple KFCs to try and find out my phone number and address. Since then, the Union has been my back up when I say I haven’t done anything wrong, I’m just trying to my job the best I can. Timika said one of her favourite things the Union does is the No One Deserves a Serve campaign the SDA’s awareness and education campaign working to eliminate customer violence and abuse towards retail and fast food workers. During the pandemic was the worse time for me, I’d have a breakdown at least once a week, it was so bad. Our company doesn’t wear glovesbecause gloves are unsanitary. But customers would scream at you for not wearing gloves and you would try to explain that gloves are bad and carry a lot more germs, but they’d still scream at you, scream at everyone. Most of our staff are young girls, and boys get it too, when they’re abused it helps to know there’s people there to make sure they feel safe, and are safe, at work.
