25.01.2022 Has your iso clean out uncovered a pile of old wetsuits and thongs? You can now give these items a second life thanks to an innovative recycling program being run by RipCurl Torquay. All you need to do is drop them off at Rip Curl’s Torquay store. If wetsuits are in good condition they’ll be donated to Surfing Victoria’s Indigenous Surfing Program, otherwise along with old thongs they’ll be crumbed down and turned into bitumen to build roads. They also accept surf change ...mats for rubber recycling. If you can't make it into the store, you can also post your wetsuits and thongs to: Rip Curl Retail, 101 Surf Coast Hwy, Torquay, VIC 3228. 22.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday The first surf shop in Torquaywhat does it take to be the first? There was a time when there were no surf shops in Torquay, and they did st...art to appear some of those early surf shops were very low key indeed. Don Loveless had a TV and radio repair shop in Gilbert Street. He had some wax and a few boards in his showroom in the early 1960s, then he had an idea. Surfing at that time was a pretty stripped down experience. Surfers just needed: a board; some wax; and a pair of shorts. Surfing in Victoria means dealing with weather extremes and, in Torquay, the water and weather can be cold. Don figured surfers needed to keep warm so he and his wife, Fay, started making custom surfwear. Shorts and parkas (jackets) could be produced in club colours, or to your own design. The gear was available locally and via a number of agents in Melbourne and interstate. In the following decade, surfing would evolve and grow Torquay Surfer Supplies providing an indication of what was to come. broad market appeal. At that point Torquay had only a small permanent population and seasonal visitation, and surfing was yet to establish its broad market appeal. In the following decade surfing would evolve and grow Torquay Surfer Supplies providing an indication of what was to come. With thanks to the Australian National Surfing Museum for this story! This is the second of a series of stories exploring the factors that first inspired innovation and business on the Surf Coast. #ThrowbackThursday #inspiredbysurfcoast #buysurfcoast #clickforvic #buylocal #buytorquay #torquay #torquaybusiness #janjuc #greatoceanroad #greatoceanroadaustralia #visitgreatoceanroad #greatoceanroadtrip #surfcoast #surfcoastlife #regionalvictoria #madeinvictoria #wandervictoria #visitvictoria #exploreaustralia #searchthecoast
