25.01.2022 It's great that people are reporting illegal fishing activities!
25.01.2022 A Mangrove jack breeding program, based at Southern Cross University, has successfully bred the fish in captivity for the first time in NSW. The remarkable achi...evement was made through SCU's Naitonal Marine Science Centre in Coffs Harbour. As part of the program, more than 4,000 Mangrove jack fingerlings were hatched, and are now about 10 weeks old and 50mm in length. Mangrove jack have a unique life cycle which involves spawning in seawater at offshore reefs, and later migrating into the estuaries and even right up into the freshwater. The life cycle of this fish makes the species vulnerable to impacts from the construction of dam walls and weirs which can prevent access to the freshwater habitat. Therefore, breeding for freshwater impoundment stocking is a great breakthrough. The eggs are only 0.8mm in diameter, and the newly hatched larvae just over 2mm, making the species a great challenge for hatcheries to produce. Southern Cross University in conjunction with the Department of Primary Industries hope to stock the fish into a freshwater location in northern NSW in coming weeks. This achievement was made possible by funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts.
07.01.2022 Do you know how to correctly identify Bream from Tarwhine? Yellowfin Bream have a silver to olive-green body with yellowish pectoral, ventral and anal fins. htt...p://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//salt/sw-species/yellowfin-bream Black Bream typically have a silvery-olive brown colour or bronzy-black upper body (depending on habitat). The ventral and anal fins are usually brownish-black in colour, with a small black spot at the base of the pectoral fin. http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//saltwater/sw-species/black-bream Both Bream species have 4 scale rows above the lateral line and have a slightly pointed snout. Tarwhine have prominent golden lines on head and body, with a silver background colour. The head is rounded with a snout not as pointed as Bream. Tarwhine have 6-7 scale rows above the lateral line (rather than 4 seen in Bream). http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//r/saltwater/sw-species/tarwhine Yellowfin and Black Bream have a legal length of 25cm whilst Tarwhine has a legal length of 20cm. A bag limit of 10 and possession limit of 20 applies in NSW to any species of Bream or Tarwhine or a combination of all Bream species and Tarwhine. http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au///regulations/sw/sw-bag-and-size
02.01.2022 More fishing infrastructure projects are underway this year including the construction of three new shelters over existing fish cleaning tables located at Soldi...ers Point, Lemon Tree Passage and Karuah. In addition a new fish cleaning table and shelter is being installed at the Shoal Bay boat ramp. Keep an eye out this year too for a new fish cleaning table at Horseshoe Beach, Newcastle and an upgrade to the table at Stockton. New fishing platforms are also being built in Moruya and South Durras on the NSW south coast. These projects came about by local anglers working with DPI and local Councils to identify the need for new fishing facilities and to facilitate funding from the Recreational Fishing Trust. This table at Soldiers Point is 1 of 3 in the Port Stephens area that will receive a new shelter this year.
