11.01.2022 - Dreamtime ancestors travelled across the country, creating various geographical features still present in the landscape today. One of these stories relates to a great battle of the air, land and sea animals (see Steele 1984:65-6), and traverses all of Yugambeh country, forever binding Yugambeh people to country and each other. One aspect of this story took place between Rocky Point at the mouth of the Logan River (Doogurrumburrum) and Cana...ipa (Spear) Point on Russell Island. Yowrgurra, a goanna, was leading the land animals in the battle and he carried a spear (kanaipa). The sparrow hawk swooped from the sky and snatched the spear out of Yowrgurra’s grasp then flew over the water and drove the spear (joan pronounced yo-wun) into the back of the porpoise. The porpoise (kowwunday or boobaingun) blew the spear out with a blast and torrents of blood and water flowed from the wound, flooding all the neighbouring country. This resulted in the islands, channels, swamps and creeks at the mouth of the Logan River. ( ) .
