24.01.2022 Please take a moment to read this article and have a think about wether our current government is prioritising the needs of our vulnerable community members

22.01.2022 We are putting together Christmas hampers for those in need in our community! These will include toiletries, grocery and transport vouchers, as well as fresh socks and jocks! We will not be taking a break over the festive season.. we will be taking these hampers out on Christmas Eve. If you are in a position to, please donate so that we can afford to get as many of these out as possible. ... Every little bit counts! We would love for community members to get involved in the packing process, perhaps even write/draw up a card to go into a hamper. If you feel uncomfortable about making a monetary donation, you may like to purchase and donate items to go into them or even just to share this with those around you and see if they're in a position to do so. Thank you to everyone who has been supporting us and members of our community in need. Christmas isn't always an easy time regardless of your situation, but not having a home to be with loved ones in can make it especially difficult. Please click the link for more information.

21.01.2022 How unbelievable is this donation from @23hikes Her generosity has truly blown us away and will make such a huge difference to the lives of those in need within our community. Many Tasmanians live below the poverty line, unable to afford the basic necessities such as food and shelter. Its pretty hard to overcome the bigger hurdles in one's life when you are struggling to meet your basic needs, but we all deserve the chance to not only survive but thrive. Thanks to the gen...erosity of some incredible people like @23hikes we are able to help some of our communities most vulnerable members live a little easier, this means so much to us and to those we serve . . . . #hobartcity #housingtasmania #tasmaniancharity #tasmaniansinneed #homelessness See more

21.01.2022 A good article to share with your friends and family members whose views are more driven by economics than empathy

14.01.2022 We have begun purchasing items for the Christmas hampers! It was a wild time clearing the shelves this morning! MetroTAS have kindly donated all-day bus passes. ... Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who have donated so far!!! Please spread the word, we have a bit to go to ensure we have 40 packs filled with goodies. If you're not in a position to donate, consider sharing this post to help us reach out goal. 13.01.2022 Yesterday was the first of many BBQs to come with our friends at Flint House. It was a magical, sunshine filled day enjoyed by all. Thanks to everyone who helped out and got involved. Big thank you to Tasmanian Meat Wholesalers and Sue Hickey - Liberal Member for Clark for their support!

12.01.2022 Are you an artist? Do you have art that you have made or would be happy to make to feature in our online art auction fundraiser? Short of a Sheet is a 100% community run organisation, so that means that every now and then we need to replenish the funds in order to continue supporting those in need in our community. Our last fundraiser was such a success, we are SO incredibly grateful to those of you who came along and supported us and have continued to show support, BIG than...k you to The Brisbane Hotel for allowing it to happen and continuously supporting the community. It has been a couple of months since then and we are starting to realise that we need to get those funds up, so that we can not only continue to support those in need, but so that we can expand and fulfil our vision that everyone has the opportunity to feel at home in their community. We have decided that we would love to put together an online art auction to raise funds, and so we are seeking artists who would be interested in donating some art to the cause. If this sounds like something you might be willing to participate in, please get in contact via DM or our email: [email protected] for more information about how this might work and the date we are looking at (in roughly 6 weeks to allow time for those who are donating something new to work on their creation).

11.01.2022 We are holding an online art auction, and we're really excited! We are overwhelmed by the talent and generosity of the artists who have donated their time and work. ... We are a grassroots organisation that aims to support those in need in our community, with a focus on those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The proceeds from the auction will allow us to continue to support community members by providing emergency relief items, regular BBQs, and consistency.. as well as carrying out some of the big ideas and community engagements we really want to see put into action. SOUNDS GOOD, BUT...HOW WILL THE ART AUCTION WORK? Bidding commences at 6pm, December 5th AEST. Click on the handles to go to the artist's page to view and bid on their pieces. Read the artist's summary as they will set their own T&C's and starting bid. Bids are open for 24 hours, wrapping up at 6pm on December 6th AEST. Highest bid at that time will take the piece. Organise trade of money for item with the artist who will then pass on the proceeds to SOAS.

11.01.2022 Thank you SO much Ella and everyone in the community who is aiding us in supporting those in need!

11.01.2022 Wow, what an incredible feeling it is to see this project come into fruition! We have officially packed 40 Christmas hampers to be given out to those in need in our community on Christmas Eve. Each individual pack cost roughly $60 to create; a collective effort of around $2,500!!! ... Each pack consists of: - $20 grocery voucher - All-day bus pass - Blanket - Socks - Underwear - Soap - Toothpaste - Toothbrush - Shampoo/Conditioner - Baby wipes - Toilet paper - Water All of which would not possibly have happened without the support of so many wonderful individuals and collectives in our community. We want to extend a most heartfelt thank you to Green Crochet , Metro Tasmania City of Hobart and everyone who has donated to ensure this project would come to life and people who are left alone and without hope on Christmas Eve will know that they are part of a community that thinks of them, that cares for them and that will go out of their way to share with them. Warm fuzzies, SoaS team x

08.01.2022 To all of the wonderful community members who support us, we want to extend our gratitude for allowing us to do what we do and to get out there and connect with those in need on a regular basis. One thing that is important to Short of a Sheet is transparency, we want you to know what's going on every step of the way and invite you to ask questions and get involved. With that in mind, we would love to invite you to join us in packing the hampers and to perhaps write a little... note or card to put amongst them. If you can't make it out on such short notice, THAT'S OKAY! You may like to drop off a card before Christmas Eve for us to pop in the packs or just to keep updated via our socials. 06.01.2022 Did you buy copious amounts of tinned food and toiletries at the start of the pandemic? Are you now feeling a little frustrated at how full your cupboards are and a little guilty for hoarding? We can help!! We are a grassroots community organisation that supports those experiencing homelessness within nipaluna/Hobart. We work within the community distributing emergency relief items such as food, toiletries, socks and jocks, clothing, tents and bedding all sprinkled with friendly words and smiles. If you have more than you need, wether it be items or some money you would like to go to a good cause, we are always in need of donations. We operate independently from any church or existing organisation so funds are limited whilst the need is not. Please give what you can, and share this around if you are unable to. We love you all, SoaS

02.01.2022 We'd like to talk about language and how the things we say affect the world around us. When we see someone who is unwell, we do not say "oh there's that sick man", so then why is it that when we see someone experiencing homelessness, we say there's a homeless man or that homeless woman?; Because before anything else, they are that man or woman, they are human beings with likes and dislikes, passions, knowledge, ideas, needs, wants. They are human.... We challenge you to catch yourself the next time you use somebody's circumstances to define them. We challenge you to take a person first approach and start with "there's that person/man/woman". It just may change the way you view the world and those around you. Some people experiencing homelessness don't even like the term 'homelessness', they're tired of hearing it. Some people struggle with the fact that such a title has taken over their identity and just want to be seen as the human beyond those circumstances. For this reason, we are trying to adapt to saying "community members/ friends in need" where possible. It doesn't mean someone is lacking compassion when they use the wrong language, it's simply a lack of understanding because that conversation hasn't been had. If you do catch someone using language that might feed into the narrative that someone's circumstances define them, rather than repremanding them you could try sharing this information. We can all educate one another. When you're not sure, be honest. Ask someone what they feel or think about certain terms and narratives. We cannot speak on behalf of somebody else, but we can use this space to share information shared with us and change the narrative.
