25.01.2022 BALUNGARR A SOLO EXHIBITION FROM MARK NODEA 25 SEPTEMBER - 15 OCTOBER 2020 Short St Gallery is proud to present this nearly sold out show ‘Balungarr’ by Gija artist, Mark Nodea. We invite you to view his mesmerising exhibition via the link to our website. Mark is one of the most exciting artists to emerge from Gija country in recent years. Mark's steady following has grown considerably in the last few years which have seen him be a finalist in a number of awards, and have a...rtworks placed in prominent collections within Australia. His bold contemporary compositions draw on the strong oral history and traditions of Gija language and culture. The resulting paintings strike a cord with the viewer and engage them long after the initial sighting. Mark paints Ngarrgooroon, his mother Nancy Nodea's country, which extends around Texas Downs Station and to Purnululu. As Mark explains below, 'I grew up in Warmun in the early 70s and went to school in Wyndham. My childhood was with my mother and grandparents at Balungarr (Texas Downs Station). As a child, my mother and grandparents always took me, brother and sister out bush, camping and living off the land, gathering bush tucker such as wild berries, bush honey, turtles, fish, freshwater shells, emu, turkey and kangaroos. At night around the campfire our grandparents would tell us stories of how their parents lived in the bush country, before colonisation, before white people came to this country. There were no vehicles, our people used to walk across rivers and creeks, climbing hills and mountains. Our grandparents also talked to us in our language (Gija). They taught us Law and Culture, teaching ceremonies our way. Now as an adult, I’ve got three boys of my own; 21, 18 and 17. I am 50 years old and still painting as my elders’ taught me in Warmun. I do love my art, it’s my life.' Email us at [email protected] to go on the wait list to preview future works by Nodea! Congratulations Mark on such a successful show! Warmun Art Centre Mark Nodea

17.01.2022 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT TIWI ISLANDS ARTWORK FROM THE TIWI ISLANDS & SPECIAL PROMOTIONS 7 SEPTEMBER 2020.... The Tiwi Islands are located North of Darwin in the Northern Territory and comprise of Melville Island, Bathurst Island and nine other small Islands. Tiwi culture is very unique, as Pedro says, it has an emphasis on dance and also the Pukumani (burial) ceremony. As well as a skin name, each person has their own dreaming and dance which they inherit. During ceremony, the body is painted in geometric abstract designs, known as jilamara. The art of the Tiwi Islands is often derived from the artists personal jilamara painted with natural ochre on to bark, canvas or sculpture. This has resulted in a culture where self-expression is admired and each artist develops their own unique aesthetic within the traditional practice and with an emphasis on good design. Creating beautiful art is part of Tiwi culture and has been recognised by the many important institutions and collections that Tiwi art can be found in world wide. Short St Gallery works with three art communities on the Tiwi Islands, Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association, Munupi Arts and Crafts Association and Ngaruwanajirri Inc. Each art centre offers a unique perspective into the art and culture of the Tiwi Islands. The art community celebrates engagement in Jilamara (good design) and encourages artists to find their own voice and expression across all three art centres. This is evident in the diverse styles found in the Tiwi Islands. They range from gestural, to refined lines and geometric shapes, through to ephemeral mark making. The result is hypnotic paintings and sculptures that hold the weight of history while celebrating the artists individual voice. . In the words of artist Columbiere Tpiungwuti, 'Long, long, long time ago our great, great grand parents taught us how to paint, we have to have that in our heads and we gotta remember it and know it.' Short St Gallery invites you to view artworks from our Tiwi collection via the link below. If you fall in love with more than one work, we are offering 10% off multiple purchases from this collection until the end of September. See more

Matthew graduated from the National Art School in Sydney with a strong art practice in abstraction. He held his first exhibition in the 1980’s and has since gone on to exhibit extensively through out Europe, Asia and Australia, including numerous residencies aboard. 06.01.2022 A LONG DISTANCE ROMANCE: A SOLO EXHIBITION FROM BECKY BLAIR SHORT ST POP UP @ STACKWOOD STUDIOS 27 NOVEMBER - 18 DECEMBER 2020 Short St Gallery presents A Long Distance Romance with Becky Blair. During 2020 Becky has had to conduct her love affair with travel and Australia from a distance. Short St Gallery is honoured to be part of this long distance romance by presenting Becky’s first solo exhibition in Australia in over two years. While Becky remains in Britain due to pand...emic travel restrictions, her heart and soul is firmly planted in Australia, where she holds many memories and returns to time and again. Becky Blair is an artist who aspires to create imagery that has strength but is equally fleeting and momentary. Her work presents an exploration of colour, texture and composition to render physical aspects of life that are intangible. Her artwork is a celebration of these intangible moments, evolving through a complex layering of glazes, texture, drawing, printing and painting. They lead you through her obsession with colour toward memories of where you might have been or are yet to go. Becky’s artworks draw their inspiration from her eclectic experience’s; Mediterranean holidays in the 80s, India on motorbike in the 90s, travelling across Australia in a van and sleeping under the stars. They stir the viewer to remember their own adventures, reminding us of the romance and mystery of being elsewhere, and the longing of wanderlust. We invite you to view A Long Distance Romance via the link below. For those of you lucky enough to be based in Perth, we will be showing Becky’s artwork over three days at Stackwood Studios. A Long Distance Romance and additional works from Becky’s back catalogue will be available. Opening hours as follows, all welcome. Friday 27th - 9am - 2pm Saturday 28th - 9am - 4pm Sunday 29th - 9am - 4pm @ Stackwood Studios, 10 Stack St, Fremantle, Australia

06.01.2022 SPOTLIGHT ON : SHORT ST GALLERY STAFF PICKS Ever wondered what Short St Gallery’s staff would buy ? Or what they are drawn to and consider a rising talent or established power house in the art world? Five of Short St’s wonderful staff have selected four artworks each. Each piece has caught their eye for varying reasons and below is a quick explanation from each staff member. If you are interested in further insight into the selection we have included a PDF that can be downlo...aded from the Viewing Room link below. We are also available to via phone and email to answer any of your questions. We hope you enjoy viewing these glorious artworks as much as we have enjoyed fantasising about taking them home! Elya, Manager, ‘ Elizabeth Nyumi’s tactile surface; her loose and luminous palette as she re-connects to country, taking us on a delightful journey across the canvas, to which we are happy to oblige.’ Tahnee, Coordinator, ‘Yata Gypsy Yadda’s artwork has and always will make me feel something indescribable and ephemeral. I find this one of the beautiful things about art. It can speak to you personally to make you feel or think something that often can’t be quantified. This is one of the pleasures of perusing art and finding the right piece for you.’ Anna, Gallery Assistant, ‘I find Judy Martin's painting very compelling because of its complexity in form and colour. This is a work about her father's country at Wakura which is very special and sacred to her and her family.’ Jade, Gallery Assistant, ‘Mrs Japulija's use of colour is so vivid and lively, creating a sense of joy in her work. The Perspex medium creates a beautiful, glass-like aesthetic giving the work a unique quality.’ Anthony, Gallery Assistant, ‘Molly was born in the bush c.1948. Her painting Wakapulkatjara provides us with a metaphysical view into the past, illuminating the ancient bond between nature and humanity. Making this a very special work of art.’ Email us at [email protected] for a preview of the works selected
