25.01.2022 Working Dog, Thredbo Valley Horse Riding, Crackenback, NSW. From the land of The Man From Snowy River, the Snowy Mountains is an iconic region for horse riding and it does get more Aussie than brumbies, kelpies, Jillaroos and Jackaroos. The latest Fly Program saw participants challenged with riding trained brumbies at Thredbo Valley Horseriding located at Crackenback, NSW. While some had a small amount of horse experience others it was the first time. After a crash course in ...riding, they saddled up and headed into the mountains. At the end of the day a fireside cookup, chat and relax. Even the working dogs get their time off. 24.01.2022 Last week the new Nikon Z6 MkII arrived just in time for a shoot offshore at Summer Cloud, Jervis Bay with Andrew Ettingshausen from Escape with ET and staff from Hobie Asia Pacific. Accompanying the Z6 MkII was the new holy trinity of Nikkor lenses... Z 14-24mm f/2.8S, Z 24-70mm f/2.8S and Z 70-200mm f2.8S. Its been over 15 years since the last trinity was launched with the D3. The original trinity set the standard for all the follow.... the new set them for dead. At presen...t unfortunately Abobe ACR doesn't have support for NEF files for the new Z, hopefully soon, these images are jpegs straight off camera. All I can say is the MKII version is a huge step up from the original Z6, responsiveness, focus speed, tracking etc are all great. Especially under challenging conditions like yesterday pitch black at 4am to white out after sunrise, waves, swell, mist etc all creating difficulties with focusing.... the new Z6 MKII and the new trinity feel just like the original D3 felt 15 years ago. 24.01.2022 DUO DEKASHINMUSHI SUNSET MOTH Perspective Control Lenses or Tilt Shift have always been my favourite lens for product work, nothing comes close to their unique design and abilities based on the Scheimpflug principle These lenses enable photography to transcend the normal restrictions of depth of field and perspective. In this case this lure is suspended with the camera at 30 degrees to the subject. No matter what F stop is chosen on your lens/camera it cannot produce an imag...e that is precisely in focus along its length. This image was shot against a matt black velvet back drop, reflectors underneath at f11, approximately 40cm away using a NIKKOR PC-E Micro Nikkor 85mm f2.8D, at this setting the normal DOF is 0.3cm, but by using the tilt and shift function, DOF is infinite, thus a perfectly full focus image. Lately I’ve had several people say just do stacking, while it may work, it still will not attain perfect detail and taking a series of images and merging them in software takes time and that is something I just don’t have. So to me the NIKKOR PC-E Micro Nikkor 85mm f2.8D is my perfect lens. They are a super expensive, take a long time to learn and dedication to use correctly. Simple understanding of photography vs mathematics vs light is essential to their use. Even simple principles of exposure change like as soon as you tilt or shift, exposure needs to be adjusted whether that be slowing the shutter down or increasing flash power to compensate, that is just one of the challenges. 23.01.2022 Australian Rugby Legends Past and Present, Thredbo River, Crackenback, NSW. The Fly Program brings guys from all walks of life into the outdoors to help them rediscover themselves. But on the latest trip it was all about bringing Fly Program Ambassadors, Partners and Sponsors together to help create footage for the television show Escape Fishing with ET. On the program were two of Australia’s legends of Rugby. There’s no explanation needed for Andrew Ettingshausen, other tha...n he is one of the greats, an incredible sportsman, angler and friend. Then there’s Lachy McCaffery, an Ambassador of the program and one of the best rugby players in current times, plus one of the kindest most compassionate guys I’ve met in a longtime. Over the days it was awe inspiring to listen to both these guys talk about the past and present, while fishing, hiking, horse riding and sitting around the fire. As most guys would say You Bloody Legends!!!!!. On top of that, they are just great friends and mates, I’m looking forward too many more adventures in the future together. 20.01.2022 URBAN COWBOY - THE FLY PROGRAM One of the amazing parts of being part of the Fly Program from the beginning is the people you meet. The opening program for the 2021 season saw a group of guys from all walks of life who are all sponsors, partners, ambassadors or previous participants get together for a team bonding and promotional week. Many of us hadn’t physically crossed paths, yet within hours we were all longtime mates. One such guy, Kyle really made an impact on the group... for his enthusiasm, passion and dedication One of my personal goals from the beginning was to open up to the participants about my past, too many its confronting, a taboo subject of a harrowing childhood, but to others its an ice breaker to release their emotions. For me Kyle’s raw emotions literally minutes after me talking to the group hit hard too me. Anyone who can speak raw to a group of strangers gains huge respect from myself. At the time it was difficult to fight off the tears and still now as I type this, I have the same emotions. Bravo Kyle you are an immense asset to the Fly Program. 18.01.2022 Kangaroo Valley Bass Fishing with Escape Fishing with ET. Great to shooting in some beautiful country thats located right in my backyard, Kangaroo Valley located just inland from Jervis Bay is one on southern NSW's most beautiful places. Its a great location for a shoot with Andrew Ettingshausen and the ideal place to do some promotional images for Hobie with the brand new Hobie Mirage Passport 12.0 Bay Sand. The region got a pretty severe storm only days before which didnt help the bass, only a few little guys played the game, but some European Carp helped save the day. All image were shot on the Nikon Z7 with the new holy trinity of Nikkor lenses... Z 14-24mm f/2.8S, Z 24-70mm f/2.8S and Z 70-200mm f2.8S. #escapewithet #hobie #hobieasiapacific #nikon #nikonaustralia

18.01.2022 HOME GROWN PERI PERI HABANERO SAUCE PREPARATION Peri Peri sauce became famous in Australia due the quirky ads from the fast food chain Nando’s. Made from the Birds Eye Chilli, a small red chilli commonly seen in asian grocers nowadays, both the the chilli and the sauce itself is known as ‘piri-piri’ in Portuguese. It’s name comes from the Swahili language ‘piri-piri’ means ‘pepper-pepper’ and has morphed into several iterations, including ‘pili-pili’ and ‘peri-peri’. Th...e latter translation is commonly used in South Africa, home to countless chicken shops and the first-ever Nando’s. Though we do grow the original Birds Eye Chilli, we have a great crop of multiple coloured Habanero’s this season, so why not make the classic Peri Peri Sauce recipe with them using habaneros, garlic, ginger, pepper, salt, limes and sugar. Let the ferment begin! Camera: Nikon Z7 II. Guided through the trails by an incredible team, you can feel that they have a special bond between horse and rider. On return after a few hours riding even the participants made that connection. 14.01.2022 DUO TIDE MINNOW SLIM 140SP SAND SMELT Long slim shiny products are really quite challenging to photpograph, they are difficult to light evenly plus reflect everything that is at the same angle to them. 13.01.2022 FISH & CHIPS - DUO SPEARHEAD RYUKI D3 The classic fish and chips originates from England during the 1800’s. The first fish and chip shop in England is believed to have opened in Mossely, near Oldham, Lancashire, around 1863. Since then it has become a national dish of the UK and spread throughout the globe becoming a culinary favorite. How did this picture come about, well this little toy chip packet appeared one day in a some lolly bags that we purchased for a kids fun day ...at home. This was such a iconic little packet design that I immediately thought of a lure image representing fish and chips. The chips in the image are real chips made and are only about 3 cm’s long. Add a classic grey/white tile sheet that is so common in many takeaway stores and my favourite trout lures the Duo Spearhead Ryuki and we have a fish and chips DUO style. Lighting is a simple setup, two Good AD300 Pro’s with ADS6W modifiers shot through two large 200 x 150 cm diffuser panels to create bright yet soft even light. Key light at 1/4 power and the fill light at 1/16th power, plus a small gobo to bounce a bit more light on the fries logo. Camera: Nikon Z7 II. 13.01.2022 Bright Future, Thredbo River, Crackenback, NSW. The Fly Program brings guys from all walks of life into the outdoors to help them rediscover themselves. But on the latest trip it was all about bringing Fly Program Ambassadors, Partners and Sponsors together to help create footage for the television show Escape Fishing with ET. On the program was one of Australia’s legends of Rugby. There’s no explanation needed for Andrew Ettingshausen, other than he is one of the greats, an ...incredible sportsman, angler, friend and now part of the Fly Program family. Physically the guys were challenged by Matt with long hikes, flyfishing (many for the first time), horse riding, bush cooking and extremely long days. But the real challenges come from the open discussions on our mental challenges both in the past and present, how to manage them and how to face up to them. With lots of emotions shared, there was plenty of hugs, pats on the backs and some tears, great to see guys opening up. With new partners the future looks bright. Huge thanks to all the guys attending Matt Tripet, Andrew Ettingshausen, Lachy McCaffery, Luis Rodriuez, Kyle Bullock, Michael Harrington, Chris Purnell and Damon Banning. You made my job of capturing all the images over the four days a pure pleasure. 05.01.2022 HOME GROWN HOT SAUCE PREPARATION Constant lights for studio use have come along way in the past few years. While they don’t have the power and motion stopping ability of strobes they do have a place not only for video use but also for still life especially food photography. While I still prefer to use strobes especially Good AD600 Pro’s and AD300 Pro’s, I’m starting to explore the LED constant light ability of the Godox FV200 for food and low key product photography. Hand h...eld LED lighting in the studio is also even more possible with modern cameras due to their incredible image stabilization. Like most modern cameras the new Nikon Z7 II combines 5 axis image stabilisation with super fast focusing to create super sharp imagery. The new Z 50mm f/1.2 S is Nikons fastest autofocus lens to date, while lenses like this usually aren’t known for fast focusing the new Z 50mm is blazingly fast and incredibly accurate, perfect for this style of work. This summer has been very mild, humid and with lots of rainfall. Perfect for the veggie patch, so much so that we have a plethora of vegetables, fruit and herbs, thus lots of preserving each week. Withe plenty of preserving done its time to use those excess chillies, garlic, lemon and herbs into some hot sauce. Camera: Nikon Z7 II. 04.01.2022 DAIWA CERTATE SW Its twenty years since the first Certate was released and I’ve shot every variation and model of the Daiwa Certate for catalogues and promotion. The new Certate SW series is the latest model from Daiwa, and a good predecessor to the legendary Certate HD models that were released over ten years ago. The reel in the image was the only hand made sample and as usual with these early samples they can be a bit rough but this one was a real challenge. Usually prepa...ration from the beginning is essential to get the reel looking right, but this one took some time due to some parts not perfect, warped and hand machining inconsistencies, nothing that can’t be fixed later with many hours in Creative Suite. But first off with any reel like this is, a tough clean and polish to remove any dirt, dust, oil, fingerprints etc. then light it up. A three-light setup with the main light a Godox AD600 Pro with a 50cm Beauty Dish from front above, power, two Godox AD 300 Pro’s from either side at 45 degrees, 1/16th power and about half a dozen small Gobos to reflect light in the right areas. And after that many many hours in Creative Suite to make it look production perfect, the final reel imagery was ready for the public too see. Like any Certate that Daiwa has released over the past two decades its sure to be a huge favourite with demanding anglers. Flash: Godox AD600 Pro with 50cm Beauty Dish, 2 x Godox AD300 Pro. 04.01.2022 HOME BAKED ROSEMARY AND LEMON THYME SOURDOUGH The current pandemic has changed the way many of us look at our lives and what we do to sustain our families and health. Cooking and growing your own food have gained huge popularity in the past year. As someone who grows all our vegetables, herbs and some fruit it’s great to see so many people giving it a go. Bread, in particular sourdoughs, are not a common food with some countries, my wife, Shengya, who is of Taiwan/Japanese he...ritage, and wasn’t bought up on the more boutique breads like European cultures. But of recent times she has embraced the love affair with the more artisan or boutique style breads especially sourdoughs that are infused with home grown herbs, spices and seeds. 02.01.2022 First Flames, Thredbo River, Snowy Mountains, NSW. The power of fire. Theres something about lighting a fire that reignites primal beginnings. One of the first challenges on the Fly Program is lighting a fire using a flint. At the end of a long day, everyone is cold, wet, tired and hungry, lighting a fire not only for warmth and cooking helps lift emotions which are often strained. Watching the guys work together to collect dry foliage, kindling and wood, combining their eff...orts and keeping their cool for over 30 minutes till the first flame flickered was a unique experience to observe. 02.01.2022 DAIWA TEAM DAIWA BLACK RODS Fishing rods are one of the hardest items I do to get perfect. The combination of a slim tubular items with multiple colours, metals, cork or eva etc make it challenging. Then to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, totally black rods appear, with black shiny surfaces, black matt surfaces and black metal components, all of which have different black tones. So the blacks have to be over exposed so they aren’t black, more 80 - 90% grey. In light of th...e difficulties of rod photos, I still love the challenge and its always satisfying when being able to shoot great looking products. 02.01.2022 Daiwa Luvias Airity Back in the later half of the 1990’s I shot the first Daiwa Tournament Airity with a Nikon F5 and a Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 Macro on film, yes pre digital. Now about 23 years later the Airity returns and shot on the latest Nikon the Z7 II. The new Luvias Airity series is the latest model from Daiwa that I shot recently. The reel in the image was one of the earlier samples and as usual with these early samples they can be a bit rough in appearance as they are of...ten hand made. After many hours in Photoshop to make it look production perfect, the final reel imagery was released this week. Camera: Nikon Z7 Lens: Nikon PC-E Micro Nikkor 85mm f2.8D with FTZ Adapter.
