09.01.2022 Jen Houston, a singer-songwriter from the centre of New York City, has one thing in common with Indigenous children in remote communities in the Kimberley’s and that’s the power of story in maintaining a sense of community. Show Radio today featured a clip from Jen’s song about the need to self-isolate, I’m Gonna Just Stay Home, which is a loose parody of Bon Jovi's Who Says You Can't Go Home? But with almost a million hits in just three days, Jen’s song has reverberated wi...th people across the globe, because it explains in its lyrics what we are doing universally for community and gives us a bopping country song to sing along too when it all gets a bit too much. Celebrated children’s author Susanne Gervay OAM spoke to us about the importance of story to indigenous children and their education when she shared her experiences at a remote community in the Kimberley’s which took a bumpy flight in a small plane and 10 hours in a four-wheel-drive to reach. Susanne told us that story is central to all learning in the community, whatever the subject under discussion, and that by embracing the Aboriginal way of learning visual as well as by story - we can all benefit from putting our learning journeys into a context of value to our own neighbourhoods, in the city or the bush.

03.01.2022 AFTRS Show Radio Host Romy Sher is a vegetarian with a secret (well not any more). She doesn’t like mushrooms. It’s not personal, it’s just that it seems that every restaurant - when we could go to them offered mushrooms at every meal as their vegetarian option. Romy’s simply got fungus fatigue. But mushrooms have got Romy excited again because of the work being done in Adelaide on the many non-edible use of humble dark living fungus, including possibly a replacement for... cling wrap, that non-biodegradable plastic that ends up in landfill. Romy told us on Show Radio this afternoon about the work researchers in Adelaide are working on a way to turn mushroom waste into items like sunscreen, skincare products and outdoor furniture coating. Romy also spoke to Jim Higman on what happened to all the fruit and vegetables from this year’s show and no, they weren’t turned into the world’s biggest ratatouille. Tune into iHeart Radio tomorrow at 11 am to hear Romy’s next shift as host of AFTRS Show Radio Special Edition.
