24.01.2022 Earlier this year we introduced you to the beautiful Rauch family including Ayla who attends the Siblings in Focus program, run out of our Hackham Community C...entre, supporting brothers and sisters of children with disabilities. Today we want you to meet Ayla’s brother, Levi. Levi was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome a condition where the absence of a chromosome at conception results in medical and health challenges as well as developmental and learning complexities. Also known as ‘the friendly syndrome’, reflecting the highly social and happy disposition of those living with the condition, Levi’s smile lights up a room and brings so much joy to those around him. Ahead of tomorrow, the International Day of People with a Disability, we celebrate the amazing contribution of everyone who lives with a disability to our community and also those who support them to thrive. #freedomtothrive For more information about Williams Syndrome or to donate locally visit: https://wsasa.org.au/ Pic: Ayla and Levi.

16.01.2022 It is very easy, when one child has disability, for siblings to be overlooked. There can be several reasons why. Sometimes it can be difficult for sibs to expre...ss their feelings and concerns. They might feel that they don’t deserve attention, or that they don’t want to add to parent stress. Providers are often too focused on the child with disability to recognise that the whole family needs support. And, more generally, the community lacks awareness about the contributions and needs of siblings. If we support siblings, they are likely to: become stronger and more able to manage difficulties. feel better about themselves. enjoy a stronger relationship with their brother or sister with a disability. feel more connected to their family.

08.01.2022 Whilst we believe that siblings should be supported regardless of whether they provide a caregiving role or not, we also recognise that many sibs do provide care. During National Carers week we especially thank them and the other many unpaid carers for their many valuable contributions.

08.01.2022 Expressions of interest for our 4-week Caring for Carers course are now open through the link in our bio! ~ Are you a carer or parent? ~ Do you work in social... services, education, healthcare, or emergency services? ~ Do you find yourself burnt out, overwhelmed, and self-critical? ~ Do you struggle to incorporate self-care into your busy life? In this course, we'll be going through the foundations of self-care through self-compassion, and how to use yoga and mindfulness in your day-to-day life. We'll dive into the challenges and rewards of being a carer, how the brain and body respond to stress, and what the mind-body connection can teach us about our emotions. All participants will also receive a workbook with all of the program content, and access to an exclusive Facebook group for ongoing support and connection. If you're interested in learning more, please fill out the no-obligation expression of interest through the link in our bio, where you can let us know about your preferences and needs. At this stage, we're hoping to run the course in December 2020 or January 2021. Can't wait to connect with you! See more

05.01.2022 When Ami flew to Melbourne with her newborn son, Levi, for emergency surgery, she thought she’d be coming home with a child with a mended heart. However, there ...she received a diagnosis that changed her family forever. In this episode, we speak to Ami her daughter Ayla about how the Siblings in Focus program has helped them find a community after Levi’s diagnosis with what many call ‘the friendly syndrome’. Hear their story now in episode 4 of Growing Strong, ‘The Friendly Syndrome’. Available now from Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts: https://junctionpodcast.org.au To find out more about Williams Syndrome, or for information about support or community events, head to https://wsasa.org.au/ *Siblings in Focus is a Communities for Children Anglicare SA activity funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. 02.01.2022 Relationships are key to anyone’s wellbeing. And ‘relationships’ are a key theme within the NDIS. However, the focus is often on assisting a child with disabili...ty develop relationships in the community. We believe that sibling relationships should be more acknowledged and supported through the NDIS. If a sibling can be supported to manage any challenges, they are often more able to contribute to the wellbeing of their brother/sister with disability. I provide one on one sessions for parents on supporting siblings and these can be claimed from the NDIS. What other supports have you found? See more
