05.01.2022 you’re indigenous?! A question asked often when most indigenous australians reveal their aboriginal identity. My body of work is an exploration of the question what does an Indigenous Australian actually look like?. People who identify themselves as 'Aboriginal' range from dark-skinned, broad-nosed to blonde-haired, blue-eyed people. An individual's Aboriginal identity is not represented through their skin, but rather through their very essence and being, and their spirit...ual connection to land. However, light-skinned Aboriginal people often face challenges on their Aboriginal identity because of stereotyping and are often questioned on the authenticity of their Aboriginality. At the root of these questions lies a lack of understanding of Indigenous culture and identity. My intention of the work is to educate viewers by visually breaking the stereotype, and ultimately explain that aboriginality is more than skin deep. As I met more and more people who participated, this work became more than just a high school art project, but something that bought a community together. So now after viewing my work, what does an Indigenous Australian look like to you?
