02.05.2022 The inland rail project will join Brisbane and Melbourne allowing for an increase in freight between capital cities. A major part of any construction project of this size is ensuring that the geotechnical properties of the construction site are known and understood. Sietronics recently completed a project looking at the mineralogy on parts of the route. We received samples as drill core, and we analysed samples via XRD and optical petrology to identify the major and minor phases in the samples. The samples were found to be primarily poorly sorted coarse grained sandstone with minor phases of Lithic clasts, Muscovite, Feldspar, Carbonate, clay matrix & Quartz and this matched well with the petrological analysis showing similar structures.
